actually this is a very pleasant and peaceful place to stay. by the river/lake. with a lot of space/garden and a large swimming pool.

not all rooms are good. but we were lucky to have a room (one bungalow separated in two rooms) not far from the waterside with large windows and a great view. rooms are very basic but not unpleasant. bathroom was basic also but modern and large. We probably had a room which had just been renovated.
however we could hear everything that our neighbors were saying. the rooms are not properly isolated. this issue has to be fixed.

the restaurant is somewhat bland, but also not unpleasant. a large, high ceiling, open room. food was average. service was friendly but very slow.

The hotel is beautiful and the food is excelent. The rooms are very comfortable and the service is great. It really is the best place to stay in Rio Dulce...
The views are spectacular and the hotel also has a Marina which allows people that are saling to be arround... This gives the Hotel a great atmosphere that we didnt see before.
We are defently coming back.

Whilst we were in Guatemala we read the previous reviews and were very worried as to what it would be like. Not sure why, but we seemed to be staying in somewhere completely different. Our travel agent had booked us in what was called a suite & it was brilliant. It was a detached bungalow, with a terrace to sit out on. A very large bed, huge flat screen tv, air con, fridge, safe & a large bathroom with lots of hot water. No wires dangling anywhere! We must have been lucky.
We were there on Sunday & there were several families using the large pool when we arrived, but they soon left. The pool could do with painting, but the water was warm.
We had both dinner & breakfast in the restaurant in solitary splendour, & the food was good & varied. Unlike others we had no problems with the front desk. Free wifi there too.
The setting is lovely: large lake, with marina right by the hotel.
So .... if you are going there, book a room like ours.

Room Tip: Book ones of their "suites"

The place has magnificent views of the river, ample grounds, and a vast complex of pools and decks. What's not to like? Well, the attitude of the staff, for one thing -- which was unique in our experience of Guatemala, where hospitality and helpfulness seem to be the norm everywhere. The first room we were assigned was in a wing that was undergoing renovations. The heat was on (it was 85 degrees F outside), making it uninhabitable, even with the windows open, and there were long loops of cable TV wire drooping from the ceiling to the floor in the bathroom. The luggage-porter was sympathetic, but the front desk was not, eventually, however, assigning us to a cooler room next door (still in the wing actively undergoing renovations and still with cable dangling down from the ceiling, but at least only over the front door). We thought that was that, but the next day, as we checked out, still another person at the front desk insisted that we owed money for room service ordered by people in another room (it had a different room printed on the check and it was served on the day before we even arrived). The front desk person was insistent, and it took our driver's testimony that we had not even arrived at the hotel when the meal was served before she backed down and apologized. These two incidents, framing over stay, makes us hesitant to recommend Nana Juana to anyone else, despite the beautiful location.

My friends and I visited this hotel recently. I was taking them on a tour of Guatemala and decided to stay in this hotel for a couple of nights. I really enjoyed the swimming pool and view. It is located in a beautiful place and the marina has a great access and service. The food in the restaurant is excellent, especially the lobster. The rooms are very comfortable and perfect for a retreat vacation. People in the area are friendly and very polite. Even though I didn't use the hotel shuttle I thought it was a great service for people who just arrived in the country. I think it iS the best place where you can stay in Rio Dulce.

This hotel has so many problems that there is not enough space to write them all. Now Guatemala is a third world country but they clearly have new world style as they steal money by over charging while promising to return funds...but do not! There are many many safety concerns with this property including electrical wiring live and in the showers, mosquitos in their open air restaurant where employees spend more time talking to themselves than paying attention to customers. Uneven and unlit walkways, equipment and buildings that are coming apart everywhere, difficult access and unhappy management. Even their French speaking general manager is disgusted saying that the "Argentinian owner could care less about conditions and just wants to get the money". Food is subpar and will come warm or cold it is a crap shoot, hot water is also a guessing game and things will only get worse while you are there. Now is you are a hippy who likes to be stink and could care less then this is the place for you. If you have any style or desire for simple comforts and things like hot water then go elsewhere. This place is unsafe unsafe and unsafe.

The hotel is in a great location on the banks of the Rio Dulce - its restaurant (more later) abuts the marina. But the location is wasted by the indifferent staff and run-down, dirty rooms and linens. Cinderblock walls in the bathroom, bare electrics, no tv, bare tile floors, toilet needed repair (I did), grey towels - at least the a/c worked. Food in the restaurant was good - skirt steak was tasty at Q130 ($15 approx). Second cup of coffee at breakfast costs an extra Q10. Bottom line: a great location wasted on a poor hotel.

Room Tip: Eat here, don't stay.
