Read the great reviews which sealed the deal for us when we planned a trip to SD and Wyoming. This HIE is a jewel in the middle of a tourist-trap-filled area surrounding Mt Rushmore. Most other lodging consists of mom-and-pop motels so it was a welcome sight to find this one. Just FYI, there are a couple of other HIE's in the area in Hill City and Keystone. The hotel was very welcoming, friendly, and CLEAN. We arrived during a surprise early-season cold snap, including snow. The staff was very helpful in advising of road conditions and good places to eat. A must for me is a quiet place for the night, and this did not disappoint. Has a basic work-out room, indoor pool (which we did not use), and a decent breakfast (love their cinnamon rolls). The shower is great and the temperature controls are accurate. The heat does cause the room to be dry and we fought a little static, but that is fairly normal for any hotel room in winter. We are on our way to Yellowstone and other locations in Wyoming, and only hope our other lodging is as nice.

I had read on Trip Advisor the great reviews. I agree. The hotel is located well for the attractions, in a quaint town. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The gave us all the info on restaurants, told us about the 10% off at a local eatery, what worked for kids. The hotel has an outdoor fire pit, they turned it on for us, they were just a great staff. The management team has done a great job there. We even called ahead as they didn't have any rewards nights available and they accomodate us with an extra night using our reward points. That is awesome customer service, in this crazy world. I can't even get Hilton honors to credit us points on a five day stay this summer my husband had for business. We stay away from Hilton now especially when you have folks that are so great like this HIE in Custer. Anyhow, we had two queens with a balcony out the front side. It was totally great, we would have prefered the back but it was a sold out situation. The pool is great, large enough for laps, nice hot tub. The breakfast area /gathering spot is lovely and western and comfortable.
The outdoor area with waterfall and fire pit was awesome with a bottle of wine at the end of the day. One night we got pizza and eat out there. The mgmt was great and turned on for us. Really great experience. Certainly appreciated when your are traveling. We spent three nights based on the reviews, and so glad we did. We toured from here, Custor State Park - don't miss that!, Rushmore, Badlands, Wall Drug, the MinuteMan Missile silo.

This is the finest Holiday Inn Express hotel we had ever visited and I am a Platinum member in the chains Frequest Stayer Program. The hotel has a very woodsy feeling to it and is cleaned spotless. All of the staff member were welcoming on each occasion I met them alway willing to go out of their way to help whether it was planning dinner or a the best route to drive to an attraction. Room was large and very well cleaned and bedding was very comfortable. I will certainly return whenever I visit Western South Dakota.

Since we travel often, I get sick of places that aren't clean.. This place was spotless, new, quiet, had a great view, friendly staff, great breakfast and a very cute little western town... The breakfast room is in a large lodge type room with 25 foot ceilings and a glass wall overlooking a waterfall and a hill. Our room had a view of same and we even saw deer going up the hill. It was a very pleasant experience and we will be back the next time we are in the area. It is very convenient to all the attractions....Great wireless service... Oh, please eat a cinnamon roll for me. They are delicious...

My husband and I went to Custer to bike the Mickelson trail and do some hiking. The hotel was quiet, clean and very new looking. They offer free wireless internet which I couldn't get to work but they have a small computer room and I was able to use their network cable for my laptop. I'm more of a Hilton person that Holiday Inn but we were both impressed with the hotel and would stay again.

We staying in the Holiday Inn Express Custer last week for two nights with our two boys, ages 7 and 9. It was WONDERFUL. We had stayed our first two nights in a Custer State Park cabin and the luxury of this property was so welcome to my husband and I. It is gorgeous from the moment you walk in. First, it smells great. Holiday Inn Express has a new signature scent in the lobby and it's a nice welcome. Second, the staff was amazingly accomodating, helpful, friendly, responsive. EVERY single staff member we encountered throughout the stay was great.

The free breakfast was terrific for a free breakfast. Our kids were on cloud nine with the hot cinnamon rolls and there were plenty of healthy options that made us happy. The pool was a decent size and also a great looking room with a fitness center overlooking it. The back of the building has a cool waterfall down natural rocks. There are table on this patio area where we had a pizza dinner (Pizza Works nearby is very good and delivers). They also have a nice gas fire pit back there.

The area where they serve breakfast is really cozy and pretty and they had a fire going in there in the cool evenings.

I was so concerned about finding a hotel in the Black Hills area that wasn't crummy and this place really beat my expectations. I've already recommended it to friends!
