Gold Camp Cabins
Ranked #13 of 18 Hotels in Custer
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We arrived in Custer on 22 July without reservations (our original choice proved to be unworkable for our situation). The ladies in the Visitors Center suggested three or four options that met our criteria: cabins, out of town, affordable. Gold Camp Cabins was one of them, and we feel as if we hit the jackpot!

We called to check on availability, and the man who answered (as it turns out it was the owner, Bob Jorgensen) said he had one cabin left for the two nights and gave us a brief description. It sounded fine and we headed for the site. We were a little put off by the initial impression - the cabins are adjacent to the property that is Bob's log home business - but it turns out we should have been reassured. The cabin (#1) FAR surpassed our expectations!

Many cabins are very basic and can be a little 'rough'; not here! The construction was solid, the natural wood interior finish was beautiful. #1 had a queen bed on the lower level with a twin in the loft. The kitchen had a sink and small working area, a fridge (small, but larger than dorm room size) and a microwave. There were cooking utensils but no plates, knives or forks. There was a small grill outside but no stove (nor pots and pans). As we had done some camping on our trip we had a gas stove and eating / cooking utensils, so this wasn't a problem for us. Keep it in mind, though, if you're not wanting to eat out while you're here.

Note also that there were no staff 'checking on' things - it's very much a self-sufficient stay. I'm sure we could have gotten assistance from the business office during the day, and probably could have called the listed number at night if necessary. To our minds, the 'service' was perfect but you may have other expectations, so please keep this in mind.

The bed was quite comfortable, and the bathroom was large with a good shower. The entire cabin was immaculate. A small A/C unit was available; we opened the windows at night and were quite comfortable.

The property has a horseshoe pit, a volleyball net, two fire rings and a small pond; it backs up to a wooded area that's a gorgeous backdrop. The proximity to the log home business isn't an issue evenings and mornings. Bob provides firewood free of charge; the only thing he didn't do for us was provide a clear night for stargazing - ;-)

We couldn't have been more pleased, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gold Camp Cabins to our friends (or to stay here again!).

p.s. - Another shout out to the Custer Visitors Center - friendly and helpful! Thanks again!

When we had a family reunion in the area over the 4th of July week and did not book until the last minute, we had few places to choose from. We are not a cabin type of family, so we were hesitant to book this place. But we could have not been happier with our choice.

We stayed in the largest cabin at the end of road. It was basic, yet filled with charm. The rooms were incredibly clean when we walked in. All of the basics were available- towels, bedding, a refrigerator and a sink (no burner or hot pot). Unexpected when staying in a cabin was the daily cleaning service. Our towels were swapped out and anything we needed was replaced. It was nice to have the cabin experience with the cleanliness of a hotel!

Outside there was plenty of firewood, a charcoal grill to cook on (bring your own briquettes), a picnic table and plenty of chairs to move around the property as needed. The fishing pond was great for the kids, and the nightly evening fire was so relaxing and peaceful we didn't bother going into town often. Make sure you bring roasting sticks for marshmallows or hotdogs.

Our only very slight disappointments were that there wasn't a a burner or hot pot in the room to cook soup, etc. And the water in the shower sometimes never got hot, so we had to schedule shower time for everyone to get, which wasn't a very big deal.

Everyone we met who worked at the place was extremely friendly and promptly got back to us with any requests. We had an amazing time and definitely hope to return again one day.

These cabins are just adorable! Like a large log cabin on a smaller scale. We were thrilled when we opened the door! Clean and cozy. Set in a lovely, quiet location. There is a grill, firewood for a camp fire and all the stars you can count! Far enough from the lights of town but close enough to drive in just minutes. I'd stay here again and again! The ONLY minus was the lack of a hair dryer, iron, and the ac didn't get as cool as we would have liked. Luckily we had packed a hair dryer, who needs to iron when you're exploring, and it was cool enough to open the windows to bring down the temp.

Room Tip: We stayed in cabin 3. There are two double beds in the same room, which we liked. Room had a kitchen...

Great alternative to hotels in the Custer area, we enjoyed cozy and comfortable lodging over Labor Day weekend at the Gold Camp Cabins. There are only 5 cabins located in a peaceful setting with great views of the Black Hills forest and an amazing star filled sky at night! Free firewood provided for campfires @ night. The cabins are fairly new construction, clean and nicely appointed with basic comforts. Bring charcoal briquets if you want to grill. This is centrally located to the areas attractions. We will return!

This was perfect for a camping/cabin type vacation but with all the amenities like bathrooms/AC, etc. It's close to downtown Custer and Custer State Park but just far enough to feel like you're secluded from the busy city life. There's a nice pond which was great for the early risers in my family, they would just go out and fish until the rest of us woke up. A cement sidewalk around the cabin was just enough for the kids to ride their scooters and skateboards outside. Firewood is provided for night bonfires. There's a total of 5 cabins but each has their own firepit, grill, picnic tables. We went to Dakotamart in Custer and bought grocheries and would grill every evening. Staff provided new towels, cleaned, and made beds every morning like a hotel. Staff were very friendly, we couldn't of been happier with this place, we will definately return.

Room Tip: Choose Cabin #5, it's at the end, a little more secluded than the rest, it's a larger cabin...

WOW! What a place to stay! 3 of us rode motorcycles up for a 3 day week-end. Stayed in Cabin #5, which was perfect for 3 guys. Clean rooms, maid service everyday, quiet, peaceful evenings. I couldn't count all the deer that came by every evening; at least 2 hawks, and 1 owl amused us Sat. night! Due to the wildfires in the area, there was a fire ban so we couldn't enjoy the fire pit. Other than that, a great place to go and relax; will be taking my wife the next time.

Room Tip: We stayed in Cabin 5; 2 full beds, 1 queen in a seperate room. It is the larger of the 5, and reall...

We loved our stay at the cabin. We traveled with our 3 kids and stayed in cabin number 5. We loved that our cabin had a separate bedroom with a queen bed. The location was great and very quiet. Very pretty setting with the woods behind us and a the little pond next to us. It was fun to watch deer graze in the evenings. Although the cabins are modest, they were clean and well maintained. My only complaint was the bed in the master bedroom was due to be replaced. I would recommend the cabins to my family and friends!
