“Best of a 25 day Vacation”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

State Game Lodge was awesome. A quaint, but clean and comfortable cabin. The herd of bison spent the entire day right by our cabin. The beds were comfortable, large bathroom, and comfortable sofa bed. You are right in the middle of animals, beautiful scenery and byways to Mount Rushmore. Plenty of food around the park, and a walk away from a general store if you want to grill out.

Stayed in one of the cabins for two nights. So very quiet and peaceful. Clean and comfortable beds. Close to the Coolidge general store so can pick up what you need - we ate pizza both nights as the Lodge dinner menu is pricey. I'd probably recommend one of the other lodges just based on that alone. But this lodge has a lot of history, and it's beautiful. It's worth staying in one of the lodges just to be able to spend enough time in the Park.

Stayed here for 4 nights whilst we did some hiking and sightseeing around the area.
We thoroughly enjoyed or stay in a motel cabin a short way from the main lodge building which contains the dining room.
OK maybe our room wasn't brand new, but it was comfortable and met our expectations for comfort and cleanliness.
The dining room provided us with excellent dinners served by efficient and friendly staff. At breakfast there is a choice of full service or self-sevice - we chose the latter which was excellent.

We stayed in one of the cabins not the lodge or motel. Cabin was dated and in need of upgrading. Location was good, food at the various lodges was excellent and the park is a must see. Would try other accommodations next trip.

We stayed at the State Game Lodge cabins for 3 nights during our west trip. They have about 10 of them just down the street from the State Game Lodge. They are getting much older and a bit run down since the other times we have stayed there. We had an alarm clock that didn't work but they promptly exchanged it for us.

But, it is your best area and prices are good for the size we had. It was a duplex cabin with 1 separate bedroom. The bison will sometimes come right outside your cabin. There was also a queen bed in the living area so it is great for couples or if you have kids. The only bathroom is in the living area.

The location is best for driving the wildlife loop several times a day. Never get tired of seeing herds of buffalo and this time there were lots of babies to see with their momma's.

There is a grocery store and gift shop within walking distance of the cabins but prices are high. They have a pizza kiosk that is open some odd hours. They have BBQ fire pits for use at your cabin so bring some charcoal.

Room Tip: Choose to stay at the cabins instead of the Lodge. Don't expect a 5 star cabin but remember it...

My wife and I stayed elsewhere in Custer State Park. I am reviewing the site of the State Game Lodge and not the lodge itself.

What makes this site so interesting is the fact that two of our Presidents, Coolidge and Eisenhower, stayed here for extended periods, thus running the executive branch of the government from Custer, South Dakota. Communication technology being in its infancy, if you will, necessitates the development of an elaborate, well-organized governmental infrastructure.

Amazing!

Given motel room as close to lodge as possible. Room overlooked car park but facilities were fine.
Food at Lodge was excellent and we were served by most polite staff. Breakfast was buffet style and good. Great place to explore Custer State Park.
