Sylvan Lake Lodge

This is one of the most beautiful lodges and locations I have ever stayed in. That being said, it's a shame that it is so poorly managed. The service was extremely slow in the restaurant. The right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing. You could ask a question and get a different answer from every employee. We had booked this reservation in January, traveled in June....on Thursday afternoon we were going to use their beautiful veranda/patio for a little relaxation only to find that the entire lobby and veranda were closed for a private party. We had no idea this was happening when we booked this. Who gets married on a Thursday? At any rate, when we complained to the manager we were told that he caters to those that pay the most money (the wedding) even though we are paying to be there too. Customer service is a lost art.

We had 2 nights stay booked at this lodge and very high hopes. The first night we stayed in the main lodge on the 3rd floor. Rooms are very dated but clean. They are in need of a good remodeling. The bed was very soft and seemed very old. Much too soft. I t was cool there and we had 2 windows in our room but there were holes in the screen so you could not leave them open unless you wanted to wake up with bug bites. The second night we stayed in one of the newly refinished cabins. It was very nice but again old beds. For the money we paid we could have stayed in a 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: I believe that most of the rooms need updating.

We stayed here for 2 nights at Sylvan Lake Lodge, Custer, SD. BAD EXPERIENCE.
FIRE/SMOKE, On the second night when we were just getting to sleep, the FIRE/SMOKE alarm went off. This was not a drill as I smelled smoke and the hallway outside our door filled with smoke. It ended up being the they tried lighting a fire in the fireplace in the main area, and they didn't open the fireplace up so the smoke stayed inside and did it ever fill the place up with smoke. Our room was fairly close to the front desk/main area so we got quite a bit of smoke even with our door shut to the point we had to open our window a tiny bit for the rest of the night.
At check in we asked to buy some qaurters to do laundry, we were told "no, you need to go to our general store to get quarters" So we go to the general store about a mile down the road and we were also told no because they needed the quarters to give change back to paying customers, and this came from the mgr/supervisor of the general store. We made the mgr/supervisor call up to the lodge desk to sell us some quarters. We went back up to the lodge desk, again about a mile up the road, and they did end up selling us 5$ worth in quarters. This took some time to do all this, and if we just were sold the quarters in the first place when we checked in, it wouldn't of been a hassle. To the lodge, have heard of maybe installing change machines? Even if it is at the general store.
At check out, the morning after the FIRE/SMOKE alarms went off, we requested our second night to be free because of the MAJOR disturbance of the ALARMS AND SMOKE and the only they offered was a free breakfast (You can already get free breakfast at most lodging places, hotel/motels, etc) Well we already had breakfast, as we brought our own, so we said how about freen dinner, and they said NO. Not even a discount!
The place has good location, however terrible accomodations.

Room Tip: Even though the lodge has good location, it has bad accomodations. Reading some of the other review...

We had a room on the first floor with a queen-size bed. The rooms are very small. When you open the door to the hallway anyone passing by has a direct view of the bed. The mattresses are old. The bathroom is small. And, the air conditioning does not cool down the room sufficiently. You can hear noise from the hallway anytime someone is in the hallway talking. Though, people did seem to have quiet time from 10 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. If you like a rustic setting, you may like the room. I do believe they have larger rooms in the hotel. The price was rather high for the size and quality of the room.

We stayed in lodge 503, just two twin beds and kitchen area. Great location. Short walk down to the lake. Highly recommend this lodge. Lake is great, nice trail to walk around it. We did the Blue Bell Lodge Chuck Wagon as well (associated with this lodge) - Highly recommend it. See lots of animals, have a great time with the kids. We would return.

Five star, unbelievable location and scenery! With two star motel-like sleeping rooms.

You are not here for the rooms. The bed was full, not queen, but the mattress was pretty good. The bath towels were good and there was hot running water. Otherwise, the rooms were small, noisy and not all that clean.

But the location is why you make your reservation months ahead of time. The great room/lobby was great. The dining room. too. We had a great dinner with timely service. (We have heard it is not always so, but we were blessed.)

Room Tip: They say the cabins are the way to go.

We stopped in here on our way through the park. It is absolutely magnificent and the views from the patio spectacular. The staff was very friendly and we took the time to stroll around and take in the ambience. We were too late for breakfast and too early for lunch so it was suggested that were go to Blue Bell for lunch. We did and it was great.
