We just spent four nights in Unit #10 the week of 8/18. For my husband and I, it was perfect. We didn't expect or desire a hotel setting. The nights were cool so there was no need for A/C. The cabin was clean, well appointed and spacious. Supplying our own soap and shampoo was not a problem. The town of Custer had a little market that stocked our picnic basket for our day trips. The Wrangler served an excellent breakfast and the Cowboy Cafe and Black Hills Burger and Bun made for great dinners after a day of touring. You are a short drive to all the area attractions and it was even an easy trip to the Geology Museum in Rapid City. I hope to have the good fortune to return to the area and stay at Calamity Peak again.

We spent 2 nights in the Lodge (Unit 8) which was spacious for a family of 4, and could sleep up to 8. It ain't the Four Seasons by any stretch -- it's an old house, dated decor and appliances. But if you're OK with rustic and basic, you'll like it. Very clean, well-maintained, all the kitchen equipment and seating you need for family meals. 2 private bedrooms, large kitchen/dining area, large living room with couches and cable TV. The owner, David, is very nice. We used the firepit out back, our kids roamed the grounds and played Frisbee. We had a great experience and would recommend it for the value and cleanliness. Location is perfect -- just outside Custer / Custer State Park.

Had to make last minute travel plans to South Dakota and this was one of the few places I could find. Actually, David, the owner, had no cabins available for the time I needed to stay, but was willing to accomodate us if we came a day later. We stayed at the Lodge which was the only unit available. David was very helpful and considerate, rsponded to my emails and provided directions. The place was very clean and roomy. There were only three of us but the place can sleep 8. It was cool and comfortable. Large clean bathroom. There's a cabin above you and you can hear them sometimes, but not too bad, mostly quiet. Washer/ Dryer and kitchen was very convenient since we had already been on the road for a while. Close to everything but located in a very quiet place across from Calamity Peak with its own creek and hiking area in the hills right behind the cabins. It's an old house so there's not much light. You have to open all the shades and turn on all the the main lights. The appliances are old but all in good working order and clean (could maybe use a new coffee pot!). Other than that, it was a nice place to stay, cheaper than most hotels, conveniently located, friendly owner and perfect for my two boys and me. Would have stayed longer if I had the time.Thank you!

We went to South Dakota for a week this summer. We stayed in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Hot Springs at various hotels. We stayed two nights at Calamity Peak Lodge in Unit 4. In retrospect, we would have stayed the week here and drove to the other towns to see the sites. This place was hands down our favorite place. It was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. David was very nice! My son left his $30 Dream lite dinosaur there and we got it in the mail the day after we got home. I called David and offered to pay him the shipping and he wouldn't take it! Next summer I am hoping to talk my husband into going back and just staying here. It is conveniently located next to Custer State Park and Crazy Horse. Keystone is pretty close as are the other sites. The view from the front and back porch is awesome. My kids and husband agree...this was our favorite place to stay. (Very close to a grocery store, too.)

We stayed in a studio cabin, just a small room with bed, couch, wall mounted TV and a small bathroom. It didn't look like much, but it was comfortable. We had just been to Devil's Tower that day and we were astounded to have Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind on TV as we were getting ready for bed...coincidence??? I slept like a log that night, good bed and such a peaceful location. I also really enjoyed the shower next morning, great water pressure and plenty of hot water. My husband wasn't so lucky as our neighbors must have been using water during his shower. He had some inconsistent temperatures. This place is a really good deal and I would love to come back with more family and stay in one of their larger units. The grounds are really pretty and the owner is very friendly and helpful.

Great place. Stumbled across this place while searching for a place to stay so we could see Mt. Rushmore. Quaint, convenient and definitly cost effective, it was a great place to stay in teh area. Close to Rushmore and lots of lakes. We did the tourist thing, fished and caught lots of trout.

This was a three generation excursion - grands in room 2, kids and grandkid in room 3. The kitchen was in the middle of the two connecting rooms which was great. We ate cooking our own meals. We even grilled some of the trout we caught. We also ate outside in the beautiful weather.

Highly recommend Calamity Peak Lodge. Nothing fancy. Nothing lacking.

I would rather stay here than any 5 star hotel. Knotty pine, small kitchen, comfortable bed and clean. Nothing fancy though, it's a cabin. Outside there is a bbq grill similar to what you would find in a park or campground but cleaned daily. Also nice patio table and chairs on a grassy area. It was so relaxing and we just ate in each night. Half the price of the Holiday Inn in town and only a mile away. Definitely going back. Also, if you haven't been. Custer is a pretty neat little town. We did some hiking and went to Crazy Horse and Rushmore. Crazy Horse for us was the least impressive. After Rushmore just continue on the road for the long way back. Beautiful drive.
