“Very Clean Room and Friendly Staff”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

We stayed there in November for a weekend trip and the room was clean and comfortable. The Motel has a good central location to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave and Custer State Park.

We loved our 4 night stay here. You are so close too many attractions and restaurants. The owners, Brenda and Don, were so pleasant and helpful and made our stay even more enjoyable. Don has some really good life stories- ask him how he lost his finger. He also has a piece of art work to the left of his desk that he used to make and we wanted to buy one like it. The room though a bit small was clean and comfortable and had all you needed. Ask Don for a hair dryer to use though. Don also has 10% discounts to some good restaurants. We liked The Black Hills Burger and Bun and The Bugling Bull. Of the many things to do in the area make sure you travel The Needles Highway, Wildlife Loop Road , and Iron Mountain Road. The only negative was no continental breakfast but they do have very good coffee in the office all day.

After having read the reviews, decided that this was the place to check out while heading back from TRNP in North Dakota, down to Spearfish Canyon, on our way home to Ft. Collins, CO.
The owner was friendly and helpful, giving us a list of eateries that would give a discount by showing our room key.(Have breakfast across the street at the Wrangler). The room was ADORABLE! Retro Vintage in black, white and red. Yes, it was a bit small but had everything one would need for an overnight stay, fridge, microwave, COMFORTABLE BEDS! I would definitely like to stay here, again when in the area.

If you want to be near a lot of sites and a motel that is fun Custer City is the place to stay. We were pleasantly surprised by the friendly, family, atmosphere of this motel. They have family rooms which is a real plus. The bathroom was a bit small but that's just part of the adventure. Family Dollar across the street as well as restaurants and you can find more places to eat either way down the road. Chairs at the back and front areas to watch and listen to the thunder and lightening storms and weather was around 80 in Aug so it was comfortable. The motel was clean and the customer service was very good. Our family loved this place and the price is awesome for the quality. Custer City is the central place to be able to see Mount Rushmore 11 miles away, Crazy Horse 8 miles away, and Custer State Park 10 miles away, Jewel Cave 4 miles away. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse both have light shows when it gets dark so it is nice to only have to travel a short distance away.

This motel is a lovely find. So glad that there are still these lovely Mom and Pop style motels in America. Refreshing to stay in unique little property that is obviously loved by its owners instead of a soulless chain motel. Spotlessly clean, big soft towels, and beautifully simple with original charm.

This is a locally-owned motel with a 1950s flavor. It has many repeat customers who have stayed each year for ten or more years. The owner is in the process of updating and modernizing the rooms.

The room was slightly small but comfortable. We had an older CRT TV but there was a comprehensive selections of cable channels. They are converting to flat-screen TVs. The wireless internet was problematic; it would work for a time and then stop responding. When I asked the owner to reset the system it would start responding again, but after a couple of hours the problem would return. It was frustrating to have to keep asking for resets.

The owner said he had invested in all new wifi equipment (we did have a strong signal at all times) and that the problem was with the local cable provider GoldenWest being overloaded. I have no reason to not believe this.

We stayed four nights and one morning there was cut-up fruit offered, but the rest of the time only coffee.

There are numerous places to eat within walking distance. The Purple Pie Place is nearby.

I am shocked when I read reviews re: the disappointment in the size of the rooms and the amenities available. The Rocket is an awesome, older motel. The owners show great pride in ownership, work very hard to make sure your stay is the best it could be and are very accessible on the property. They advertise the property exactly as it is. There were no surprises as to room size or amenities. We were overwhelmed, however, with all of the extras this older motel had to offer. Very comfortable bed. The fresh clean smell of the linens/towels (which made me feel I was in my own home). This motel uses more expensive laundry soap to ensure this homey feel. The linens were plentiful, bright white and no stains what so ever. The owners, Don and Brenda, are in the process of renovating this property and doing a wonderful job. Our room had a microwave, mini fridge and TV with cable. A huge container of clean micro fiber towels with 24/7 access to clean motor vehicles is just outside of the office. Great location to all of the attractions in the Black Hills.
For those of you complain about the room size or amenities, remember what part of the country you are in. Isn't the reason we travel to small towns and this part of the country, to remove ourselves from all of the amenities and perks of the Big City? Learn to leave your laptops, cell phones and need for TV at home and enjoy your surroundings. If you want BIG rooms, bathrooms, free breakfasts, stay in the BIG city.
As for us, we will continue to "keep on rockin'" with the Rocket when we are in the Black Hills. Thank you Don and Brenda for your passion in what you do! God Bless.
Stayed 9/23 and 9/24 in room 20

Room Tip: Stayed in room 20 at the top of the hill. Made it easier for parking the motorcycles.
