“The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2013

The Basilica of St. Michael is where Maira and the Captain got married in the movie Sound of Music. It is a beautiful Basilica in the small town of St. Mondsee in Austria. The entrance to the Basilica is quite simple, but once you enter, you know why it was chosen for the movie. The pillars, carvings, architecture, steps leading to the altar were truly works of art. We had lunch as a open air cafe right across the Basilica where we had a sumoptious meal of Beef stew and pork ribs. Relished the meal to the very end. Then we drove to the nearby town of Lake Giligen where the opening scene of the movie Sound of Music was shot....where Maria sang ' the hills are alive with the sound of music....." It was a sight out of this world...with a aqua blue lake and snow clad mountains surrouding it. We bought a few gelatos and sat by the lake, lost in our own thoughts of the wonderful creation of God. Not a major tourist destination, the place allowed us to roam about and enjoy the simple pleasuers in life with the ever friendly Austrian folk.....A must visit for those vacationing in Salzburg.

“Different yet classy and lovely”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2013

This basilica is not very big but very elegant and classy. One can reach easily since road goes right up to the cathedral. It is very beautiful form inside and has history attached to it due to association with the great '' Sound of Music" film. A must see spot near Salzburg and visit remains incomplete if you do not see it.

“Lovely Basilica”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2013

We visited St. Michael's Church twice - Once in January after a light snow had fallen, and again in July with temps in the 30s. Beautiful venue, and an easy drive from Salzburg (20mins by motorway or 30 mins on the scenic route). A must-see! We watched Sound of Music the night before our tour so we could easily recall the places from the film.

“A gorgeous church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2013

This is the movie church from The Sound of Music but even if you are not a fan it is too lovely to miss. Easy to get to by car...as we did. The plaza in front is beautiful. We were there in a cold, pouring rain so the konditerai on the corner serving hot offerings was a find!!!

“Very impressive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2013

Visited on a very wet day so couldn't really appreciate the town.
Inside the Basilica it was amazingly ornate and beautifully kept.
Very popular destination because of the connection with "The Sound of Music".
