That while I left our friends who were going to see the church, two coach's arrived,on the side was emblazoned "Sound of music tours". I waited until the passengers emerged and was astounded to see that the average age was late twenties!!....why astounded? well had assumed that it would be people of my age for some reason.
I spotted a small bar attached to a petrol station and wandered off in that direction....great find,if like me you have little interest in either the church or the Sound of music I would recommend a stroll in that direction.

“Very well-kept church”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2013

Our tour-group visited this church as part of our "Sound of Music" tour. The interior and grounds were very well-kept and attractive. We caught a small choir rehearsing....the voices were "heavenly" !

“A mass to remember.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

Happened to be in Mondsee on a Saturday afternoon and so visited thye Church with my brother. A special sung high Mass was in progress; the Church was packed, and the Mass was taken by the Cardinal of Salzburg . Singing and musice ( mainly Bach) magic, and being a rather lapsed Catholic I found the experience very moving and spiritually uplifting - all the better as it was in the traditional Latin form so we could join in the singing. My soul is revived!

“The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2013

The Basilica of St. Michael is where Maira and the Captain got married in the movie Sound of Music. It is a beautiful Basilica in the small town of St. Mondsee in Austria. The entrance to the Basilica is quite simple, but once you enter, you know why it was chosen for the movie. The pillars, carvings, architecture, steps leading to the altar were truly works of art. We had lunch as a open air cafe right across the Basilica where we had a sumoptious meal of Beef stew and pork ribs. Relished the meal to the very end. Then we drove to the nearby town of Lake Giligen where the opening scene of the movie Sound of Music was shot....where Maria sang ' the hills are alive with the sound of music....." It was a sight out of this world...with a aqua blue lake and snow clad mountains surrouding it. We bought a few gelatos and sat by the lake, lost in our own thoughts of the wonderful creation of God. Not a major tourist destination, the place allowed us to roam about and enjoy the simple pleasuers in life with the ever friendly Austrian folk.....A must visit for those vacationing in Salzburg.

“Different yet classy and lovely”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2013

This basilica is not very big but very elegant and classy. One can reach easily since road goes right up to the cathedral. It is very beautiful form inside and has history attached to it due to association with the great '' Sound of Music" film. A must see spot near Salzburg and visit remains incomplete if you do not see it.
