Unfortunately we can't rate the hotel at a level it deserves after our experience:
In early June my wife and I had booked 4 nights at the Weinpress as part of a two week holiday in the alps. We arrived after a long days drive and immediately on entering the hotel we were met by the unmistakeble smell of stale smoke in the reception area. We are non smokers and are used to the no smoking rules now in place in the UK. In Austria its typical that although the restaurant is non smoking there is a smoking area around the bar and quite often, as in this case, the areas merge into each other. After checkin we went to our room and thought we could smell smoke but then reasoned it might just be up our noses from earlier. As we settled in for the night it was obvious that guests had been smoking in the room, it kept us awake that night. We were not happy at all and wanted to leave the hotel. After breakfast we packed and went to the desk to checkout. They insisted that the rooms were non smoking and that no-one had ever complained before. They said that they were full and had to lodge people in other establishments so there were no other rooms. The management insisted that we paid for the 4 nights we had booked as was stated in international hotel law and they showed us supporting documentation. We must have spent an hour arguing the case, we were happy to pay for the 1 night but due to our complaint and their intransigence we wanted to move on. It looked like they might even call in the local police if we didn't pay up, they were determined. Eventually they agreed to a slight reduction for our complaint but we still ended up paying 60% of the cost of the next 3 nights. They said it would be claimable on our travel insurance, well it turns out that it isn't.
To be fair on the hotel the food was good and up until the dispute the staff had been cordial.
The moral of the story is to be very cautious about accomodation in Austria and Germany as smoking is still very much ingrained in the culture. Its a shame because there are so many other positive things about those countries and apart from this incident we enjoyed our holiday.
