“Quiet family run hotel in village centre but needs some updating”
Reviewed 6 June 2012

Overall we found this hotel adequate for our needs. The bedroom was very comfortable although the absence of any pictures on the walls made it feel rather spartan and some furniture needs modernising.
The hotel was kept very clean (except for the presence of many flies in eating areas which came from the cow sheds nearby which are cleared out on the fields in May) and the food was generally adequate without being very exciting.
Some of the dinners were good but others rather disappointing especailly some meat dishes.
The satelite tv in the room was a flop with over 100 channels and only BBC world and CNN in the english language.
Staff were very friendly and helped us with luggage.
The hotel is in a very good location in the centre of Kaprun and is close to the bus stop for the cable cars or to Zell am see .The bus service is frequent and punctual..

The weekly tourist card was good value as it allowed free use of the local bus and the cable car.as well as a round boat trip on the lake at the nearby town of Zell on See.

Room Tip: Get room with balcony on south side facing the snowy mountains.

I booked this hotel as part of apackage two days before departure so having read some of the reviews here did wonder what sort of holiday we were going to have. I shouldn't have been concerned.

Registration was efficient, courteous and friendly with easy access and assistance if we needed it to the boot room and bedroom. Opening the door to bedroom i was pleased to see an immaculately cleaned room, large, comfortable and well equipped in stylish furniture. Despite the temperature being somwhere around minus 16 celcius the room was warm, with reserves of additional heating if we needed it so I can only wonder just how cold it must have been for someone to feel chilled to the point of not sleeping well.

Having been excellently served (and by 'excellently' i really mean that nothing was too much trouble for the hotel staff, from receptonist, kitchen and serving staff to chambermaid) i cannot understand why an extra duvet would have been in any way problematic.

The public areas were again clean and well maintained and it was great to see some of the locals in the place on a daily basis, think about it, what better recomendation could amplace have than if the locals are happy with it as they would know if there were better places to go.

On the subject of cigarette smoke, I am an ex smoker and am physically, quite sensitive to tobacco smoke. Whilst in the uk smoking is no longer permitted in public areas, this is not the case in many countries overseas. In austria it is still perfectly acceptable to puff away in the bars and sometimes in separate areas in restaurants. In respect of the Mitteregger I found smoking to be very well confined, with plent of non smoking areas if smoke is an issue for you. Ventilation throughout was very good and neither I nor my non-smoking companion, ever found smoke to be an issue, even in the smokers bar, as for reports of it filling corridors, other areas and even bedrooms on the first floor ( which is where my bedroom was), the idea is too rediculous.

Food. On the first day the evening meal is a buffet with plenty of well cooked and tasty food, with atentive serving staff to advise on the dishes and! If you want it, wine.
In another review there is mention of food poisoning being contracted, with the finger being pointed at a poorly heated rice dish. Whilst it would be impossible to prove either way i just have doubts that this could have been the source as, being a buffet, everyone at the hotel would have been potentially exposed, and when it comes to health matters the local authorities are probably in advance of the UK in their response to food poisoning.
The rest of the week was all of good quality, i would agree that there is room for a bit more in the way of variety (I think Talapia was offered three or four times and I am sure my vegetarian friend would bemaoned there being only one option a day! Having said that it wasn' that long ago that a vegetarian in central Europe would have had to buy there own or starve so progress is being made)'
Wines to accompany the meal were surprisingly well priced with a reasonable range being offered, my only gripe ( not grape :)) being that a couplenof wines on the card were not available, come on guys, pop down the supermarket.

Location was much better than I could have hoped, as mentioned elsewhere bus stops and shops were all within n easy walk, even for an old bloke in ski boots lugging his skis. The local slope was about 350 steps away (hownsad to have counted) with the buses closer. views, even from the first floor were v nice whent the low cloud and list cleared (it was February so waddya expect?).

Downstairs was brilliantly laid out sauna, health area. I am not a lover of sitting semi naked in over heated steam rooms, but had i known the area was so much more than that (I saw it on my last day) i would have probably taken the book, the pod and a beer (proably not allowed) and spent some time on the water bed.

I have left the writing of this for a week so as to allow my gushing enthusiasm for this place to be moderated if needed. Happily I can say I still cannot find fault with anything significant, and I would like to repeat that the staff were as good or better than anywhere I have stayed, with the bonus of adding a personal touch of being genuinely interested in making your stay problem free and, frankly, extremely pleasant.

Room Tip: If there is anything you are not happy with just let reception know and, trust me, they wil do every...

Overall we found this hotel great to stay at (although there were a few issues which I will tell of later), and will be definitely look at staying here again.

The staff were very friendly and the location was perfect. The Maiscogel ski lift is only a two minute walk away, or if you want to go to the glacier the bus stops right outside the front door and it is only a 10-15 minute journey. (For beginners I would recommend doing the glacier before you tackle the Maiscogel as the blue runs on the glacier are generally shorter and not as steep).

As many people have said the rooms are quite simple although they are very clean and have adequate storage space. We had quite a big party and did notice that some rooms were bigger or nicer than ours but that’s just the luck of the draw I suppose.

There was a bath and shower in the room we stayed in which was great for soothing the aching muscles after a day on the slopes.

I do however have one or two gripes...

Having stayed half board, the food in this hotel is not the best. It does not taste nice, does not look nice and there is not much variety. One night we were served a dish that can only be described as looking like a piece of tinned dog food. Also there was never enough bread and we had to keep asking for more. Having said that though, the waiting staff were lovely.

As in all Austrian bars, the bar does get very smoky and I did find it affecting my chest during the week. This is an issue in most bars though so not just a problem in this hotel. On a plus side though, the house white wine is delicious! Not generally a big wine drinker, I found myself drinking loads of the stuff as it was so nice.

The room did get a small bit cold at night but we requested an extra duvet which they provided straight away, and also the pillows are those ridiculous soft fluffy ones that are uncomfortable to sleep on.

The only other gripe we had is that the toilet roll is like sandpaper. It really is very very rough. I would highly recommend you bring your own because your behind could get very sore towards the end of the week.

Having said all that though, we did like this hotel and will stay here again. As with all hotels, not everything will be perfect or exactly to your taste. The friendliness of the staff and also ideal location more than made up for any issues we had.

This hotel is in a good location in Kaprun. A bus picks you up from outside the door to take you to breathtaking Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and the bus to Zell am see is a mere 5 min walk.

The rooms on first entrance are simple, elegant and modern with plenty of storage space and a large balcony. However the double bed was two single beds pushed together with two very thin single duvets to cover us. This was not enough in January temperatures and we had to ask for another cover. I didn't have one good nights sleep in the week. I woke up cold and un rested.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming each time we returned to our hotel and we enjoyed drinking some delicious Austrian beer in the hotel bar with some of them.

Our package was half board so breakfast and dinner was included. The breakfast buffet was sub standard. Limited options were available and were not varied once during the week. We only availed of our evening meal offer twice in the week as again the food was not very appealing (particularly for vegetarians).

The sauna room (according to my boyfriend) was outstanding; very modern and ideal for soothing muscles after a day's skiing.

So would I stay here again? Yes but I would not accept a half board offer and would insist on a double bed with double duvet.

We read the reviews before we left and were looking forward to our stay at the hotel. We arrived at 2030hrs on the Saturday, we went and placed our bags in our room which was very clean with an amazing view. The negatives however for us started as soon as we walked into the hotel, we were hit by a wall of fag smoke which made your eyes sting and made you cough your lungs up. I commented on the smoke and the receptionist said it was only smoking in the bar and main foyer, (I love this attitude towards smoking, after all the smoke know's were it can and cannot go dosent it). Our room was the first room off of the stairs on the top floor, the fag smoke would travel up the stair well filling every inch of the hotel including our room. You would wake in the morning feeling like an elephant slept on your chest and smelling like you slept in an ash tray......

Once we had checked in we came down from our room to have our first meal at the hotel, we were looking forward to the fancy dinning we had read about. it was 2100hrs as we sat down to a pretty impressive meal, the taste was amazing and full of flavour. My partner had a rice dish which was not particulary hot but this did not detract on the taste, I tried the dish while my partner gulped it down. All was well until Sunday at 1830hrs, my partner began complaining of stomach pain (arrived out of know where) and not feeling well. By 2200hrs she was a mess with vomit and S.... pouring out of every opening. Just when I was thinking she was practising to be in a horror film someone flicked a switch and boom I was hit with cramping stomach pains. By 0200hrs on Monday we were both fighting over the toilet and waist paper bin in the bathroom.
I was told after frantic calls home that food posioning kicks in like that and it would probably be something we ate within 24hrs. Bingo, the rice dish, it all made sense. It was the only thing we had both eaten the same in three days and I only tried the dish and was not as ill as my partner.

On the Wednesday afternoon we then received a phone call from reception, asking why we were not eating our meals (with the typical stern German attitude) at first I was taken back and did not want to cause a seen so I played it down and said we had been eating out. They mite as well have said "is our food not good enough for you at the hotel"? I took a minute then thought boxxxxks I'm not having this, I made a quick trip into the bathroom then went down stairs.

I told the receptionist the real reason why we had not been at the meals. Again stern rude attitude "food posioning, from our kitchen, I think not"
" no one else was ill, you have been eating else were"
I could see she was not even going to entertain the idea so I walked away, as I did another member of staff approached the desk and asked in German what was that about, unfortunately for the receptionist I'm not a typical ignorant Brit as she thought i was and can speak a bit of German. She then told the staff member what I had said, he then stud there scoffing, (rubbishing the idea).

That was it, when we started to venture bac into the dinning room to eat we were instantly singled out by rude staff. Rather than being treated with a bit of sympathy, (after all our ski Holiday had been ruined through illness) we were the couple that accussed the Hotel of food posioning, how dare us.
We were very unlucky, the hotel was lovelly however the attitude was terrible.

We are not aware of any confirmed food poisoning at the Mitteregger however there was an outbreak of the norovirus, or winter vomiting bug as it is also known, in the resort of Kaprun during January. This would most likely have been the cause of the illness experienced.

On arrival we were allocated a delightfully spacious room for 4 (there were only 2 of us) with a balcony. The receptionist informed us of a Christmas fair in the village, anticipating that we needed something to do that afternoon apart from fitting skis! All the reception staff were delightful. There is a Walter Mitty (or should that be Basil Fawlty) character who runs the bar. On ordering a small beer he started kicking a metal locker below the bar.

It would be a good idea if people had to sign for drinks as there was an uncomfortable contretemps towards the end of the holiday when the rather officious young female restaurant manager interrupted a peaceful meal to have an argument about what our table-mates had, or hadn't had to drink the night before.

We ordered a "Pitcher" of wine and got half a bottle of "Big John" at 20 euros which was a bit steep for a half bottle but it was very nice. Beware the language differences - they don't all speak English well and indeed why should they?

Annoyingly (or conveniently?) they ran out of house red after the first 3 days. There was gluggable wine available for 6 euros in the shop opposite.

Some people didn't like the fact that the Austrians still smoke in Public Bars

Enough of the moans - the room was lovely although the loo was centrally placed in the room and would have been better the other side of the bathroom. The food was plentiful if somewhat repetitive, salads were good. Puddings were weird. Coffee was extra. You just need to pace yourself. Breakfast meats were lovely.

Room Tip: First floor is fine - ask for a balcony.

This hotel is very good for a quiet family holiday. The village of Kaprun is lovely and quiet, and has stunning views in all directions.
The hotel is family run , and all are happy to help , we only a little german but our attempts were acknowledged and we improved by the end of two weeks.
The food was very good and lots of it , children could either have choice from their menu or smaller portions from our menu. Lots of variety and good size portions . You will not go hungry here !!!
The room was of good size with seperate sleeping areas for us and children , both with balconies.
The advantage of the zell am see card was massive , as a family of 4 we saved at least 500 euros .
Lots to see and do , we need to go back to complete all of the day trips.

Even had free ice cream and drinks from the owner whilst we were waiting for our coach to the airport.

Thanks very much for a fabulous holiday.
