“Great location/ medicore hotel”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

Location is great if you want to be close to the Penken lift (and not much further from the Ahorn) but we actually got the bus several times from directly outside the hotel to the train station to travel the short distance to Zell am Zillertel and Karltonberg which are great ski areas. We'd visited Mayhofen before so knew the Ice Bar in the hotel could get loud but some nights you could hear people partying till 4am from the bedrooms and we weren't facing the street. My major problem with the hotel is really just a matter of personal preference, it's clean etc but the lounge is like an airport lounge (bright/1980's style with little atmosphere - you wouldn't know you were in an alpine town) with some seriously blingy/bad crystal lighting going on and the waiter service is pretty poor. Some waiting staff worked really hard (literally ran between tables to keep up with the amount of people that needed to be served). One waiter saw us go to our table and although he wasn't doing anything didn't approach us for our food or even our drinks order. In the end we caught someone elses attention. By the Wednesday it had become a little facical and a family opposite us had obviously lodged a formal complaint for similar reasons. We stayed early on in the season so I think a lot of it was to do with staff training (lack of) earky in the season and allocation of their duties (not all waiters can serve alcohol and only some can process the bill) but for the final two nights we decided to eat out rather than go through the uncomfortable process of dinner at the Strass! Wouldn't return or recommend this hotel which is a shame because the food really was very good.

Overall I found this hotel to be satisfactory. Certainly there were more positives than negatives but the most redeeming feature about this hotel is it's location beside the ski lift in central Mayrhofen. Let me put it this way, the photo I have attached with this review was taken from our balcony, so pretty much every morning we peeped outside, checked the queue and made a decision whether to make a move or not. Considering I have no upper body strength and hate buses, the fact that we had to literally walk 20 paces with our gear to and from the lift each day was fantastic.
The service at mealtimes was super friendly and efficient. Breakfast selection was plentiful (cooked English included) and the evening meal consisted of 4 courses - starter, soup, main and dessert - as well as an additional salad & vegetable buffet selection to kick start dinner if you wanted. There was normally a choice of either one red or one white wine. priced at roughly 3 euro 50 per eighth of a glass.
Downside of this hotel is definitely the noise from the ICE bar which is attached to the hotel and goes full pelt until 10pm. 10pm is very early I have to agree for bedtime but when you're up at 7am to get breakfast, skip the queues at the lift and be ready for 9am ski school, believe me it's a long day! Just when you finally get settled into a deep sleep, there's always a few party revellers making their way home after 1am who insist on either football chanting or singing at the top of their lungs. I didn't get a good night's sleep the whole week we stayed. I even tried ear plugs to no avail. My advice would be to avoid a room towards the main street at all costs.
Room was actually a pretty decent size, but fairly standard in terms of decoration and amenities. Shower was AMAZING!!!! After a full day on the slopes, great pressure and roasting hot water was greatly appreciated!!
Only real negative experience we encountered was at the hotel main bar. On New Year's Eve after dinner, we were kindly bought a glass of wine by a lovely couple we met during our stay. As soon as my husband raised his glass in toast he saw that the rim of the glass was dirty. Not just one set of lip prints I may add, but several. This is a pet hate of his even when we are at home so he took the glass straight back up to the bar and asked for a fresh, clean glass. I understand there seemed to be a great fuss made about this by the staff but because of the occasion my husband didn't want to make a big deal of it but he definitely wasn't happy with the service he received as a hotel guest on this very small matter which shouldn't really have been a major issue. This is the second time my husband has stayed at this hotel after previously visiting with friends early last year so he was disappointed in this particular situation and how it was handled.
We didn't visit the spa as unlike it says in the guest welcome kit in your room, you cannot wear a towel to hide your modesty, it is strictly a nude spa for all guests.
All in all, we had an enjoyable stay apart from noise outside the hotel and a lack of customer service at the hotel main bar.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the mountain side and NOT the main street to avoid noise!

This is the second time we stayed at the Strass, both times we stayed in the Apart-Hotel. The rooms are quite large, with a separate seating area which is very usefull. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful: they changed our room when we asked, brought extra pillows, fixed the safe and adjusted the heating, all quickly done and without fuss. Breakfast is always adequate, for dinner you always get 3 choices for main course (plus some staple meals if you don't like any of the options) and 2 choices for dessert, plus you get salad bar, starter and soup. The wait staff are all friendly and super quick to attend to you. The wellness area is lovely, with a pool, spa, with family sauna and steam room if you want to avoid the nude sauna, plus massages etc.

The location could not be better, as it is right next to the gondola.

The only piece of advice we can give is to ask for a room as far as possible from the main street, because there is a large deal of noise when the nightclubs close.

Once again a wonderful holiday at the Strass

Room Tip: Ask for a room as far as possible from the main street (Hauptstrasse)

Travelled as a group (17) of family and friends. We were all put on the same floor near each other which was fab. We were also seated together in the restaurant and had the same table for the duration of our stay for breakfast and evening meal. Our waiter Manuel did an excellent job of looking after us. We were all happy with our experiences in the hotel and thought the food was fab, very well presented and we had very good menu choices. We had a lovely Gala Dinner on New Year's Eve too. Hotel reception were very efficient at dealing with requests and our room were great, lots of storage space and very clean. Big plus for us too was that the hotel is next door to the Penken Gondola so no having to walk far in ski boots with skis. Would definitely use this hotel again!

My family and I stayed in the Strass Hotel just before Christmas and it was a holiday to remember. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble! The rooms were very large and were cleaned everyday. The location of the Strass is unbeatable, it is right next to the main Penken lift and the Spar supermarket. Mayrhofen itself is a beautiful little Austrian resort that I would recommend to anyone, beginner, intermediates and experts alike! It was a fantastic trip and we have already booked to return in the Easter holidays.

We have stayed in the Strass six times now on our Austrian skiing trips. As keen skiiers we get away around 3 times each season with a mix of French and Austria resorts but its always Mayrhofen in Austria and in particular the Strass that we look forward to the most. The location of the hotel (next to the main lift in resort and main street) is the best in town. Rooms are clean and spacious and the hotel restaurants offer filling meals for both pre skiing and after a hard day on the mountain. The pool and spa are well worth a visit for those aching limbs and I'd recommend a Thai massage midway through your stay to keep your body fresh. The sauna's and steam rooms are naked but you must get with the times and be like our European neighbours and give it a go. Apres ski wise the hotel offers the best of both worlds, chill out in the hotel bar (suitable for families and kids) or the near by Ice bar and Arena for grown up's. See you in the Spring time when we are on our next visit.

This Hotel has everything you need for a brilliant holiday. the rooms are spotlessly clean and come with a large range of prices and views (but the views are wonderful where ever you look)
All the Staff are very helpful and pleasant nothing is any trouble to them.
The entertainment during the winter season takes some beating. The ice bar is a great place to be to end your day after a day on the piste.
The restaurants in the hotel give you a wide choice of meals which are cooked and served to a high standard.

Room Tip: all the rooms are excellent
