Kohlmais
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Stayed with my family during the busy Ski holiday period in May 2014 after staying at the also very good Post hotel in Saalbach the previous year.

The location of the Kohlmais hotel could not be better as the name suggests its right next to the Kohlmais lifts and near the ski hire shop.

TIP!! if you are using the nearby Intersport ski hire shop, collect your skis as soon as you arrive in the resort if you are travelling during a busy period. On Sunday Morning our friends and ourselves families both had to queue for more than 1 hour in the ski shop to pick up skis that we had already pre booked and paid for on-line. The shop could not cope well at all with the numbers. We heard the same story from others who had used that shop.

What really impressed us was the excellent service and also the excellent food on offer. The wines were also very good and the sommelier had excellent recommendations for us and knowledge of Austrian wines which were very good.

We had a family room which was plenty large enough for the four of us and very well cleaned with a well appointed good size bathroom with nice powerful shower etc.

My only very slight disappointment was that the swimming pool was kept a little cool. I guess that is to help cool down the sauna an steam room users. However I like a relaxing swim in the pool after skiing and this pool was too cold. There is no hot tub that I saw. Overall the Spa is very nice but not very family orientated. The pool is the only facility in the spa that can be used by kids. The rest is for adults.

Room Tip: My most important tip is in the article regarding ski hire

We booked two rooms for a family of four, an older couple and a couple in their twenties. What a great hotel and more importantly, what a great family that owns it. We had great service all the time during our 10 nights there and nothing was an issue.
The cuisine is simply superb, with the owners son being part of the first class kitchen crew. It is a tastefully decorated hotel with 29 well sized rooms. We found that value for money was better than the equivalent rated hotel in Cervinia, Italy and the Austrian hospitality was certainly evident.
There is a well fitted spa with an indoor pool and superb Sauna, steam room and UV treatment area. The hotel is just a few meters walk to any of three lifts that take you directly to great slopes in either red or blue categories. The village center is a short walk and there are two superb ski rental shops within 100 meters of the front door.
An externally accessible ski room with brilliant boot warmers completes the facilities.
Tips: Get you ski pass loaded onto your room key at reception, this costs no more than normal retail and is super convenient. There is a supermarket in walking distance to stock up on snacks and the rooms have small fridges that can keep your chocolate cold.
Room 202 has a great view but is under the restaurant and is a bit noisy around 7am. All rooms have a great view of the mountains on either side.
For some fun, visit Burgi's bar almost opposite the front door, they rock for great après ski entertainment.

Room Tip: Stay in rooms above the restaurant, they are less noisy during restaurant service. 402 is a double r...

Back for the fourth time for a Christmas ski holiday. Impressed again as this small family-run hotel continues to "up it's game". we were really taken by the personal attention and service provided by the family Gappmaier, the dining room staff and especially by the young lady at reception who has always been so helpful, friendly and efficient. definitely will consider returning next year.

Location: unusually for Saalbach, the hotel is both close to the village centre and also enjoys panoramic views from the balconies. Perfect for walkers: literally across the road from the Kohlmais lift, five minutes' walk from the Schattberg X-Press and valley buses, and on the Sonnseit Promenade. Accomodation: rooms modern, fresh decor, well equipped en-suites, spotlessly clean. Food: wide variety of tastes catered for at the buffet breakfasts; you are encouraged to raid the breakfast buffet to make your own packed lunch; full five-course dinner (salad buffet, soup buffet, starter, main course (meat or fish or veggie, chosen the day before), and desert. Staff friendly, english-speaking, and obliging.

We stayed there at the end of the summer season, with a scattering of other British Inghams' clients, which made us feel at times we were still in the UK - but a glance out of the windows soon put us right.

Highly recommended.

We visited recently towards the end of the summer season and, whilst we have been to Saalbach in the past, have never previously stayed at the Kohlmais. We travelled with Inghams and had a lovely week of walking in the sun.

The Kohlmais is a surprisingly small hotel. It is conveniently located accross the road from one of the main ski-lifts out of the village (but no noise) and it is only a short walk down into the centre of the village. We were on the top floor and had balconies to enjoy the fabulous views to the south side of the valley. The staff are lovely and their English is embarassingly good. Check-in was quick and easy (as was the check-out procedure).

Our room was clean and furnished in an understated modern style. The bathroom was simple and modern. The only complaints in there were that the "eco" shower head didn't give quite the power one might want, and that the temperature of the shower "wandered" a bit. The bed was lovely and soft but quite low down - people with bad knees/backs might find it a little awkward. There was lots of space and plenty of chairs for lounging around and reading a book etc.

The restaurant also feels as though it may have been refurbished in recent years. The food was generally good, but just a minor notch down from some of the excellence we have experienced elsewhere in the Alps. Don't get me wrong... It was fine (in fact they were really great in being flexible with certain likes/dislikes), it's just that if you are a real "foodie" you might be a smidge disappointed. However, for the size of hotel and price, it was pretty good.

They run on quite a small staff in the day time. The reception is often unmanned and even pressing the little bell sometimes failed to get any attention. The bar is also unmanned for most of the day. There is some seating in the lobby/reception and a odd little room labled as the "lounge/card-room" but there aren't any public rooms where you'd really want to spend much time. The swimming pool is "ok" but don't expect the "Bells & Whistles" type spa that you usually get in the larger alpine hotels.

The hotel also provided some nice extra touches. We had a free "Joker card" that gave free use of the various ski-lift and various other activities in the resort. The hotel also provided the facilities to make a (generous) packed lunch each day.

So.... overall..... a lovely little hotel if you know what you're getting. We had eveything we wanted and at a very respectable price. The staff are lovely and the rooms are clean adn comfortable. I would certainly have no hesitation recommending this hotel to anyone who wanted a great stay but were having to be a little careful with thier budget.

Room Tip: upper floors with a blacony were great

All has been said about this fab hotel, from the moment you walk into reception and are warmly greeted by the owner. The rooms are comfortable; we made friends with a wonderful couple, it should be said we would not have made our choice so quickly if it had not been thanks to Kandersteg Man and his wonderful reports and his YouTube videos about the hotel.

The food was fantastic, cooked by the son who is the chef. There was a full hot and cold buffet breakfast, a good varied choice at evening meal and once a week a BBQ. You make your own packed lunch from the breakfast buffet, for which they have set a side an area to enable you to do this and provide the bags and wrapping ect. If you wanted anything cooked at breakfast such as a fried egg this was no problem and also it was not a problem to ask for a change to menu to meet own taste. The restaurant caters for all dietary needs. The staff in the restaurant where welcoming and nothing was to much trouble

The bedroom was comfortable, well furnished in a contemporary style, There is even a hot water bottle for the winter nights, a free rucksack and walking poles are available for use. The bath room was bright and modern. Bathrobes, slippers, towels for pool use are provided in a basket in the bathroom. The rooms with Balconies are at the back of the hotel with views of the mountains and cable car.

The rest of the hotel is furnished in a modern contemporary style with a Austrian twist it as a small swimming pool that is adequate. There is also a sauna, changing room with showers and lockers. This complex leads onto a beautifully kept garden complete with sun loungers.

The hotel provides a joker card which provides free use of buses in the valley and free use of the various cable cars and road train at the end of the valley along with other amenities and discounts.

. You can be sure we will be returning.

Fourth visit and as ever the standards the Gappmaier Family set are high. This is a small Hotel but lacks few amenities with a pool, sauna, lounge with free Wifi and a lovely garden with great views available to all. The highlight of the Kohlmais has to be the food prepared by Tobias, young son of the Gappmaier's. As many have said no dish is repeated in two weeks and the courses are varied, sensitive to special dietary needs etc and quite delicious.

Staff are the friendliest we have encountered in many years visiting Alpine Hotels and they work hard and cheerfully to please guests. Cleanliness and comfort are are the forefront too and any reasonable requests seem to be readily acceded to.

Centrally located the Hotel is still quiet and the Church bells are soon got used too! With the facility to make up your own lunch pack from the wide and varied breakfast buffet and a free Joker Card giving unlimited access to lifts, hikers' bus and Public Pool etc a stay at the Kohlmais is great value. We long to come back and meet old friends and new like a lovely couple from Bury who booked on my earlier recommendations on Trip Adviser and were delighted with the Hotel - thank goodness!
