“Lovely Hotel with Magnificent Views”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We stopped here as a family and I would echo that it isn't really a family orientated hotel and our daughter was somewhat bored with the lack of company. That all being said we really loved this hotel. The room we had was a good size and very comfortable but with hindsight we would have paid the extra and gone for a lake view. The food was excellent and for dinner there was a choice of two mains. The weather was changeable when we were in St Gilgen so we didn't manage to eat out on the terrace for breakfast and dinner every day but did when the weather was OK this was a great experience as the view is terrific. We also really enjoyed the private bathing area by the lake, it was a bit of a trek down step wise but a really relaxing and tranquil place, just a shame they weren't always serving drinks down there! That being said the overall level of service was very good.

We were a little disappointed the couple of times we went into St Gilgen in the evening that it was quieter than we had expected.

Room Tip: Fork out for a lake or partial lake view - we wish we had!

Let me get the biggest negative out of the way first as it left a slightly sour taste in our mouth as we left Hotel Billroth. Upon check-out my wife noticed that we were charged for a salad and drink (approx. 20 euros) which we never had as the only meals we ate were the included breakfasts. Fortunately, the person at the front desk immediately removed the charge. I can only hope that this was an honest mistake or another guest was scamming the hotel. That being said, the rest of our two night stay was very good despite one day of cold, rainy weather.

Hotel Billroth sits on a hill and is a lovely 15-20 minute walk from the center of St. Gilgen, a charming town along Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee). The hotel seems to appeal to an older crowd of whom several dress a bit more formally while eating breakfast or hanging out on the large terrace. Although I'm part of the "older crowd" I still went with my tried and true t-shirts and shorts. My wife and I tend to be frugal so when we booked our hotel online we went for the least expensive room which turned out to overlook the hotel's front parking lot. Having seen the lake when we first arrived at the hotel we went back to the front desk and asked if a room overlooking the lake was available. The answer was yes (addl. 20 euros per person, per night) so we went for our first ever room upgrade and wound up with a fantastic, top floor room with a sitting area and balcony overlooking the lake. If you weren't careful, you could spend the day just staring at the spectacular view - even if it was raining.

Down the hill from the hotel is a gate through which you can access Billroth's boat house (paddle boat available to guests at no charge) and a sunning dock with lounge chairs which was perfect for relaxing or taking a dip in the lake. The sun was out on our last day and it was hard to tear ourselves away from the dock.

For dinners we walked both nights into town and ate at restaurants. On our rainy day we took a lake boat cruise that made stops at the various towns and hamlets along Wolfgangsee. We got on and off at the towns of St. Wolfgang and Stroble and had an hour to walk around and get an overview of each place.

I've been to many beautiful lakes and beaches before but the views around Hotel Billroth and the Wolfgangsee are among the best I've seen. I'd gladly return to Hotel Billroth but might bring a magnifying glass to double check my bill.

Room Tip: Rooms with a lake view are worth the upgrade given the spectacular scenery. Ask for a room on an upp...

Where to start...magnificent view from the hotel terrace, where breakfast is served every morning. Magnificent view from our bedroom and from our room terrace. Very large bedroom which in most hotels, would be considered as a suite (double sofa, 2 armchairs, coffee table, desk, 2 chairs, ...).
Service was discreet, efficient. Hygiene was top level (my husband is allergic to dust and acaries so we know rather fast about the last time curtains were dry cleaned/or not in a hotel room :) ).
Tennis court is very well maintained and offers great views over the lake.
The boat house by the lake is very clean and well maintained, offers showers, changing room, table tennis, and great decks by the lake.
This hotel has better views over the lake and mountains than the other hotels around the Wolfgangsee. Best choice, by far!

Room Tip: Request a lake view room

Such a wonderful location, building, beautiful rooms, fantastic breakfast, highly highly recommended!!! So much to do and see around the Hotel, but perfect if someone wants to stay only in the hotel, in its garden and at the lake.

We had a category B room, on the top floor, looking out to the lake. It was larger than I’d expected so that was a bonus, although a more spacious balcony would have been the icing on the cake.
For a hotel of this quality the breakfast was a little disappointing. A very limited selection of juice and cereal and standard breads with cheese and meats. The fruit salad was probably the high spot. (I didn’t try the boiled eggs and there was nothing else hot on offer).
However, any failings on that from were easily compensated by the excellent staff. Very friendly, efficient and helpful.
Add to that the beautiful grounds and the wonderful views and it’s hard to give this hotel anything less than 5 stars.

We stayed here for nearly two weeks, and enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel is a former Imperial Villa, classically decorated with antiques a plenty, and has an old world Austrian feel to it.The sitting rooms have luxurious green velvet-lined sofas and chairs, and all the walls are wood paneled. The food was very good, with a different three course meal served every night by waitresses in Austrian pinafore dresses. Breakfast on the terrace was a real treat, as the view of lake Wolfgang and the surrounding mountains was breathtaking. A packed lunch is available if you request it. The hotel has extensive gardens, which lead down to a small, private lakeside lido where pedalos can be taken out on to the lake. Swimming in the lake was also very pleasant, and bracing, and there were plenty of walks around the lake with many stunning views along the way. St Gilgen, a small, quiet and quaint town, is about 15 minutes walk away. The owners were very helpful, and were particularly kind to me after I had hurt my back. We had a very good holiday, but on reflection I would recommend this for couples or parties without small children. It is an adult place, I feel, and a very beautiful location to spend a quiet, restful holiday.

Reading through some of the reviews one gets the impression that some people go through life looking for fault everywhere they go and are not happy until they find it. Of course nothing is perfect and one can always find something that's not quite there, but, really! If you want to complain about this excellent hotel in this magical spot you must either be very spoilt or just a habitual moaner! Yes, it could be more pretentious - if that's what floats your boat- , but for those of us that love the place it's lack of pretention is what we like. It doesn't pretend to be Michelin starred cuisine, but good, straight forward Austrian cooking, and very enjoyable at that. And if you find the breakfast buffet a bit lacking, just ask the staff for what you want and they will get it for you. So, lighten up ye moaners and enjoy!!!.

Room Tip: book well in adnace and ensure you get a room with a lake vbiew. Latecomers must take what is left...
