“Very good family hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2011

We stayed one week with our 15 month old daughter.

Room: We had a "Familienstudio Sonnenschein", facing the street. The room was as per the picture on the internet site: renovated, with wooden floor, large bed (comfortable), a niche with two beds for children, a swing, and a bean bag. The noise from the street was noticeable, but did not bother us. With the windows closed, it was very quiet. The room is facing south, and therefore very sunny and could be warm. Best to leave the "rollos" down during the day. The room was clean and comfortable, and had all what a small family needs. We had pre-ordered a baby bed, a baby phone (works by ringing your cell phone), a bottle sterilizer and a bottle warmer (austrian standard - Avent bottles do not fit in it, but there was a microwave oven on the first floor), all of which were there upon arrival or shortly thereafter. The room also has a small fridge, which we used to keep milk for the baby bottle. There is enough storage room for all the stuff and the changing table is incorporated with the furniture - well tough of. The bathroom was small, but adequate.

Food: the hotel is all inclusive, breakfast, lunch and dinner are taken in three dining rooms. The breakfast was good, but we were not pleased with the quality of the food at lunch and dinner. We had expected somewhat better quality and variety for a 4 star hotel in Austria. The selection of wine is limited. The staff was very friendly, but sometimes seemed a bit overwhelmed. Bottled food for babies available.

Child care: The facilities for child care are very good. The personnel was very friendly, flexible, and attentive to the children's needs. The day care for the "baby week" was from 9 until 17:00, some days later. There are sufficient activities so that the children are not bored. There were enough prams and hiking backpacks to rent out (free). Although we did not use them, there were many bikes for all ages. The outdoor facilities (playground, pool) were very good and well maintained.

Spa: The hotel has two pools (one indoor and one heated outdoor) and a baby pool. All were very clean and modern. The fitness room is small and has four fitness machines, but seemed adequate and modern. The sauna was large, clean and modern. The relax room for adults only was nice, with windows facing the mountain (and the town below). The relax room for children had a water bed, a tent, a plastic house and many soft cushions on the floor. We liked to hang out there after playing in the baby pool. We booked a massage and were very satisfied.

Hotel: The hotel seems to have been renovated recently and is very well suited for families. It is located directly on the ski slope and in walking distance to a lift. The hotel is clean and very well maintained. Its location close to a busy street is perhaps its largest negative point. The staff at reception was very friendly and competent. The hotel has three indoor garages, therefore enough space for all guests. A ski and ski boot room is available. An adult only lounge is also available, but we did not use it because it was the only area where smoking was allowed - and therefore smelled accordingly. The bar had a limited selection of drinks, but it was still a nice place to hang out (although most parents retired early!). The atmosphere was relaxed and it was great not to be stressed about our screaming child during dinner. The photos on the internet site are realistic.

Overall: we were very satisfied with the hotel, the facilities, the staff, and the child care. We were less impressed with the quality of the food at dinner time. Nonetheless, we can strongly recommend this hotel for families. We would seriously consider a return visit.

We stayed here for a week for a late ski holiday with our toddler and baby. We have a friend who had stopped by the hotel once and was welcomed by the staff, so we thought it would be worth a shot.

We were delighted by the staff, who were the best we've ever met for caring for a young family. Maybe it is the norm in these types of hotel in Austria, but we found nothing too much for the staff. Out baby is just starting to feed herself, so there was a HUGE mess every day - and still the staff stopped by to chat with her.

The bulk of guests at the hotel were German (or at least German speaking) as it is based slightly outside the main resort of Zell am See itself. The staff were all very able to communicate in English, and took time to make sure the kids were being included in the activities.

The hotel itself was rebuilt/refurbished in 2004 and became a hotel focussed on families. The rooms all have separate sleeping rooms for the kids (in the old hotel this means that pairs of interconnecting rooms have been knocked through to be one large suite). Other hotel facilities include a fitness room, dedicated toddler pool, normal indoor pool, outdoor pool (accessed from a separate indoor pool area), sauna, massage on site, complimentary afternoon tea and cake, free wi-fi throughout etc.

Childcare is in a dedicated Creche, which has great facilities. These include all the things you expect from home, including dedicated quiet cot room for the babies, outdoor playground, plenty of staff to care for the kids etc. Even tough you are there for a short stay, they memorise your children's names on the first day to make sure they feel at home. These are the things that let you know that they are making the effort. Nicole who runs the Creche has been there since the hotel was refurbished as a family based hotel. The hotel also provides the essentials, such as buggies (with big wheels to get around the slopes), baby carriers, toboggans, bottle warmers, kettles, baby monitor, fridge in room, plenty of fruit available to eat all day and more. Care is provided from about 9am until about 8pm for toddlers (until about 4pm for babies). Most people collected after lunch the week we were there - given it was late break for most that's probably not surprising.

The food is good (more accommodating than traditional Austrian fare) with some form of pasta or noodle available most days. If you are struggling, they will do a bowl of spaghetti or chips for you (thankfully chips are rarely on display as part of the buffet style set-up). Once a week there is childcare until later at night so that the couples can have a quiest meal together.

After the end of the holiday I noticed I had left my ski boot inserts in the ski shop. I asked for the contact details of the shop so I could get them back, and 3 days later they arrived in the post.

The one criticism I have of this hotel is that they don't accept credit cards. While credit cards are not as common in Germany and Austria as they are elsewhere, I would have thought they should be accepted readily enough. It should be offered by the hotel - even with a surcharge to cover the credit card company fees.

I have written more than I normally would about this hotel, but would happily come back. I was even impressed with how easy it is to get skiing from here - earlier in the season the hotel is ski-in and ski-out; but the snow had receded too much by the time we were there so there was a 5 minute walk to a main gondola just below the hotel.

Definitely one to seriously consider if you have a family and want an easier than normal break where someone else will help give you a break from the kids. Now if only they'd take credit cards.

The two friendly and professional managers of this superb hotel, together with their team, make this an ideal holiday for young children (our boys aged 4 and 6) - nothing was too much trouble for the young and energetic staff. The entrance to the hotel is through a rather dark, dismal car park but do not let this put you off!! We stayed for a week in the summer and enjoyed making use of the hotel's excellent bikes (we did not have a car). Our room had recently been tastefully and elegantly refurbished and was spacious and contemporary - the children especially liked their own "cabin" style room.

The hotel has a fabulous beach hut by Lake Zeller, a 25 minute bike ride away. The lake is spectactular and the beach hut facilities include a raft, two pedallos and a slide into the lake from the shore.

The two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) are lovely and warm although the outdoor pool can get a little crowded on a sunny day. The play area is sufficiently large enough for young children, although not big enough for older children to kick a football about. The environment felt extremely safe without the children feeling confined. Our children were the only English speaking children in the hotel and the staff in the kids club welcomed them warmly and were keen for them to join in in the excellent show performed in the theatre at the end of the week by all the children.

The food was excellent, with a good variation to the menu each day. Pasta is always available should the children not like anything on the menu and there was always plenty of fruit (and icecream!) available most of the day! The cakes in the afternoon were delicious!

The hotel was located only a two minute walk from the cable car taking you to fabulous walks in the mountains. We would love to return in the skiing season.

we travelled with our 18mth old son for a baby and toddler week. The hotel is really set up for children with nursery, play areas, indoor pools, restaurant for the children. They also have backpacks for you to carry the little ones, or even better cycles fitted with child seats. Though we only had one day of sun in a week the hotel facilities and the diversity of this part of Austria meant we still had a good holiday and the little one had a great time !!
