“Fantastic country, nice little hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

We stayed in Schmittenhof for our golf weekend.

The location is perfect, whether you want to stay there in winter or summer. For winter, it's actually at the bottom of (quite difficult) slope, walking distance from hotel, about 150m. For summer, there are several golf courses within short driving distance (we tried 4, liked Urslautal the most, but all were really nice).

Hotel staff is friendly, and even though we did not visit during the season, all was prepared for us as if we did. Only exception was the hotel bar, that was not open in the evening, but as you can imagine, there are handful opportunities for this kind of fun in Zell am See directly.

Room Tip: Ask for room on the second floor or above if you don't like to stay on the ground level (back si...

Location, room, facilities, food and above the friendly staff made this an excellent holiday
Its a great hotel and place to ski for families and couples etc. The hotel is ski in and ski out. It has everything a 4 star hotel should have. The food was fantastic a good selection, good quality and plenty of it . Absolutely beautiful hotel, with lovely big rooms. Spotlessly clean, wonderfully decorated throughout with lovely little finishing touches everywhere all over the hotel, wooden hearts and quaint little decorations that made the hotel homely and full of character.
Location of the hotel is good - walking distance to the nearest ski runs (5 mins without ski boots on!) or a good 30 mins walk into the centre of Zell am See. There are however, bus stops directly outside the hotel to take you to both should you not wish to walk.Beautiful spa facilities at the hotel .All in all highly recomended for a break in a welcoming and friendly establishment.

This hotel has a huge potential to give you a good and pleasant stay, but it always misses smth.
1. Location
At a first glance a location may look very good, but as you stay you understand it's not that good. It's pretty close to Trass X-press, but still you have to travel with your gear rather a way to get there. For some people that wouyld be nothing, but someone who dislike to walk a lot with the gear may find it troublesome. Anyway you can chose to take 16th slope, which is very close, and go down to City X-press. Returning home can also be a quest. So happened that blue 12th slope was closed all our stay, so our only option was two black slopes (14 or 13) and a lift (never ever!!) so keep it in mind.
It's too far away from the center and any shops and groceries, and getting transportation may be tricky at times. Going down is ok, but way back was a real downside.
As for me, I would choose smth close to City X-press next time.
2. Interior
Lobby, restaurant and public areas were good, but the room was too small and too simple to my taste and to the price.
Bathroom was ok. Only disturbing thing was a light activated by movement sensor. It kept on when you want it off and went off when you are in, not always immediately reacting to your waves.
It worth mentioning that there was no minibar and no fridge in the room. That was really bothering as I had to keep my beer and medicines at the so called balcony which is actually a shared terrace. So my beer was once stolen and my medicine was twice frozen to ice.
And you've got no teakettle in the room. Our friends asked some hot water at the bar and were charged EUR3,50 next day. That was surprising.
3. Facilities
You get a storage for skis in a separate building (good), storage for boots at the back exit. This last is a good thing, the only but is a smell there. They might think of some resreshment solution.
The spa is worth mentioning. It's great. If it had a little pool with cold water, it would be a spa of my dream. It's a pity we've discovered it so late. But if you are going to visit it, be prepared, some guests can appear there absolutely nude.
The bar is working not all the time, has some long breaks at a day time. The choice of beer is poor which is disappointing for such a beer country.
4. Service
It's normal. But it could be better. If a personnel is busy with smth or someone, you'll get no attention and that's not right, it bothers. And often you wait a way longer than you should.
A disappointment was a New Year dinner. It was a real mess, which wouldn't be with a proper communication.
Daily room keeping could also be better.
Anyway one guy at the reception was very pleasant, so he shifted personally a whole service level up by a point )))
5. Food
Everything was very good, quality and choice. A real pleasure was fresh juice at the breakfast. Coffee was very bad.

Guys at the hotel, if you read this, anyway thank you for your efforts. Please use this straight feedback to make you place much better - it takes such small thigs to do.

Room Tip: Choose a bigger one, don't be afraid to pay a bit more, it's worth doing. And pick one with...

Dear Denis,

Thank you for your very detailed feedback, we are always eager to get new input to improve ourselves continuously. We will extend all your comments to you employees also we will try to implement as many points as possible.

However there are some points of your review that we would like to comment:
During the New Year’s Eve week our restaurant was overbooked due to late information of one of our tour operator partners, we ourselves are very proud of our service staff who handled more capacity than normal within the same time with the same manpower during this busy week. We also like to draw your attention to other reviews that mention the kindness and friendliness of our staff.
We are very sorry that not all the slopes were open during your stay, unfortunately we do not have any influence on this matter at all. Most of our guests do and did find the location near the slopes very convenient.
A refrigerator and/or a water kettle can be brought to your room on demand (pending availability), please contact the reception for these matters.

Thank you again for staying with und and for your feedback!

when we booked a room for 5 days, the offer was with FREE WI-FI but then the receptionst asked us to pay around 3 euro per hour, she claimed that maybe the policies had been changed, so we paid for it because we need it, until the third day when we printed the booking details to show her it's free and this is our right to have FREE WI-FI after that she told us ok but she was angry and didn't say even sorry !

the breakfast supervisor were like an angry women even when we say good morning she doesn't reply! they were rude with me and my husband and we will never stay here again.

Dear Mr. Hayar,

Showing your confirmation stating the free Wi-Fi right from the beginning would have sorted out this misunderstanding from the start. We now offer a standardised solution to all our guests, that is a flat rate of EUR 3,00 per room for the stay, not depending on length of stay or number of devices, which we think is a quit fair value for a high speed access.

Further we are sorry you did not feel good with our staff, as many other guests state the friendliness of all our staff !!
Maybe you give us a second chance, as we are sure to offer good quality for a fair price.

Where do I start? It was very easy to find We arrived early as we drove (4 hours before check in), it was not a problem in fact the staff could not have been nicer or more friendly and accommodating!! Its a great hotel and place to ski for families and couples etc. The hotel is ski in and ski out. It has everything a 4 star hotel should have. We Had a family room although it had 3 bedrooms it was more like a suit. The "Snow Fairies" came every day tided and made beds etc, I am sure they ironed my pyjamas every day they were perfect Fairies. The food was fantastic a good selection, good quality and plenty of it!! We were only half board but the drinks for kids (cokes etc) bottles of wine and beers for adults were very reasonable. They spoke English which was a plus because my German is very basic. There is a ski hire shop (Simon 2000 Hire) across the road and up a little which was by far cheaper (half the price) than Inter-sport. They did say to me at the hotel if I booked direct with them they would do deal which we all like!! I am struggling to find a fault with the whole holiday really I cannot wait to go back. WE broke our own rule of always checking with Trip Advisor before booking an apartment here, and believed the web site for Schmittenhof, silly us. We booked a “Prestige” apartment which promised a kitchen, views of the lake, internet and being at the bottom of the mountains.
The kitchen is basic but fine for small meals, there is however a big note in the compendium that says if your cooking sets of the smoke alarm you will be charged 150 Euro so one needs to be careful, especially as the smoke alarm is very close to the stove. There was no view of the lake at all - just a building site, you couldn’t even get a glimpse so don’t know how they can get away with the false advertising.
Yes they have internet (LAN cable required 20 euro deposit) in the room but the rates are preposterous. 40 Euro for 24 hours - no thanks! As for being at the bottom of the mountain, don’t read that as by the lake as it is actually a few kilometres up a very steep road and you would need to be very fit indeed to walk it.
The walls are also not sound proof and we could clearly hear other guests conversations etc
If you are going for skiing / hiking then it is one of the closest to the lifts, but if like us you wanted to look out the window at the lake then tough luck. They also charged a 60 Euro cleaning fee!

Thank you very much for staying with us and for your feedback.
We are sorry your stay did not live up to your expectations, however we would like to respond to your statement.
Our fire alarms are transmitted directly to the local fire brigade and we get billed for false alarms, we thereby inform out guests about the possibility as a precaution. This is for the fire safety of all our guests.
All our apartments have a balcony (or terrace) in the direction of the lake. As other hotels we cannot only have top floor rooms.
WiFi Internet access in our hotel costs 3,- Euros per room and is valid for the whole stay. A quick question could have sorted out this old information
Our location, up the Schmitten hill but at the bottom of the mountain as well as our distance to the lake, is accurately descripted. Maps and pictures in our website as well as online booking platforms show our hotel location and the surrounding area.
A 60,- Euro cleaning fee applies to all our apartments and is clearly communicated on all booking platforms.
We can only ask you to read all our details carefully in order to avoid any misunderstandings that may lead to loose in your enjoyment.

We had a request to change the room we reserved, as we had to pay 60 euros for cleaning after 1 night stay and we called the reception but we were advised to ask them by e -mail. We sent a request by e-mail 3 days before our arrival, the same day when we called. Answer received only after a second e-mail, when we said that it is not at all a normal situation to not receive an answer, even if our request will not be solved. The day of arrival we received their answer (we read it at the hotel), our request not resolved and the explanation: the internet did not worked for two days. The smell in the room was terrible, The staff was rude.
The cleaning fee was mentioned in a way that you could not observe on the hotel reservation. So we paid 180 euros for one night and 30 euros the breakfast, as it was not included in the room price. The conclusion: we will never go there again
