“Good Austrian Food on a Mountain Top.”

Visitors to the top of the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See will find several places to get refreshments; all within 40 minutes of the cable station. Most of these are modern buildings offering both waiter and/or buffet service which although serving good and interesting food and drinks have no typical Austrian atmosphere.
Less than 10 minutes stroll along the mountain ridge from the cable car station in a northerly direction towards the Sonnkogel you will reach the Hochzeller Alm which can be easily seen with its orange umbrellas. The path is open in winter and summer to both walkers and skiers. In summer the footpath can be negotiated in sturdy shoes but boots are advisable in winter although the snow has been smoothed. It is
The restaurant is owned by the third generation of the family Gramshammer and it is Herr Oliver Gramshammer who is the current landlord and head waiter. His mother runs the kitchen. As befits a mountain restaurant the Hochzeller Alm is a stone and wooden building with an outside terrace with catches the noonday sun. For those cooler days you may dine indoors next to the bar. In winter there is a log fire. Even in winter, one can sit outdoors with the coat undone basking in the sunshine - see photo. The tables are made of sawn up trees and the wooden bench seats covered with leather covered cushions but everything is clean and tidy. It is everything one would expect from a mountain restaurant. Good food, company and that untranslatable Austrian word “Gemutlichkeit” together with marvelous views of the Schmittenhöhe and the snow capped peaks of the Höhe Tauern.
As soon as you are seated, Oliver will take your order for drinks and proffer the menu. Non-German speakers need have no worries as he speaks good English and the back half of the menu is in clear English. It is interesting to note that in spite of the restaurant's rustic appearance your order is conveyed to the kitchen by radio and your drink is often on your table before Oliver has taken an order from the next table.
The dishes are mainly local fare and the portions are adequate for hungry hikers or skiers. Here is good opportunity to try some of Austria’s favorite dishes all of which have been prepared by Frau Gramshammer in the modern kitchen.
In winter the roomy upper floor over the bar is opened.
The quality of the food can be judged by the number of ski groups who troop in with their local instructors. They know a good place to eat. Be prepared on busy days to share a table.
You will leave with a contented stomach and a wallet that still has some money in it. If you want a little exercise then walk along the ridge ( even in winter ) to the Sonnkogel – 45 minutes – to the chair lift down to the valley station – your return ticket is valid on this route as well.
