Though the hotel is charming and the breakfast quite good, a big shortcoming is the sleeping conditions. In my view, a basic feature odd a hotel room is the ability to be totally dark and quiet for optimal sleeping. The rooms had thin curtains which did not even block the light at night. The windows were pretty sound proof, but because there is no air system, there is no white noise, so every sound is magnified.

We have just returned from a 10 day stay at The Romantik Hotel. We were really impressed with the accommodation- traditional Austrian- cleanliness and facilities. The hotel is situated a few minutes walk away from the lake and town centre. The staff were all friendly, polite and helpful. The food was fabulous. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room that overlooked the pool and gardens which was really nice. We had a suite which was r...

I’ve reviewed the Hotel Romantik in Zell am See previously a couple of times on Trip Advisor but as it has been a couple of years since these reviews and because we have just returned from our wedding there last week I thought I would add an extra review for those who either haven’t yet visited this hotel or who may be thinking of having their wedding in Austria.

Firstly, to put this review into perspective, we have been going to Austria twice a year for many years years, visiting Filzmoos, Fuschl, Kitzbuhel, Mayrhofen, Niederau, Auffach, Salzburg, Innsbruck, St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, Kirchberg, Kuhtai, Obergurgl…….the list goes on but as a village that has it all – good transport links, a lively village centre, a lake, skiing and hiking facilities and all at reasonable prices – Zell am See cannot be beaten.

Secondly, to put the hotel Romantik into perspective we’ve stayed previously at the Heitzmann (which is the other hotel which does weddings – see my earlier review of this a few years ago) and the Tirolerhof. Neither beats the Romantik, and I know a lot of people who have been to the Tirolerhof and have loved it there, as we did, until we discovered the Romantik.

We’ve now been summer and winter for what will be our sixth successive visit in January (this next visit was a surprise honeymoon for my new wife! – well, she’d hardly have been happy going anywhere else!) and for next summer our family wedding guests are intending to come back too.

So hopefully this gives you an idea of the hotel in perspective as compared to others we have been to, as we love to travel but now we’ve found our second home we like to stay in just the one hotel!

Our wedding was for 24 guests plus us two, and we booked it a year ago as a basic package week with Inghams for us and independent flights and rooms booked via the hotel for the guests. We just dealt with the hotel directly about the wedding arrangements.

The hotel offers different wedding package deals and you just choose the one that suits you best – dead easy! You then pay a deposit to secure the rooms and the package and literally just let the hotel know what extra’s you want, e.g. if you are bringing your own table decorations, half board meal arrangements (we wanted to sit together for all meals with our guests and the hotel arranged this plus they arranged a river cruise for us using the summer card) and then you can get on with choosing the dress, the menu, etc. in a much less stressful way.

I got my suit in January when we were last there and Sabine who owns and manages the hotel looked after it for me and it was in our room when we arrived 6 months later! Great service.

Our emails were answered very promptly over the year of planning and we were even given a room upgrade for the whole week to the bridal suite when we checked in. Our requests for our guests were also met, e.g. lower floor level rooms, etc. for the older guests.

We had the horse and carriage, photographer, wedding service at the town hall, hair, make-up, cake, Austrian entertainment etc. all arranged too.

Small but significant extra touches such as the excellent maid doing up our room in petals with balloons and towel ‘swans’ plus other surprises we weren’t expecting and which I won’t mention in case I ruin the surprise for others, and a lovely speech by Sabine at the wedding service all added to the day.

I won’t give a run through of everything that happened, but if you are looking for a fantastic hotel with great food, delightful traditional surroundings and rooms, an amazing spa, brilliant service by attentive and friendly staff and especially if you are thinking of a wedding in Austria this is the place to come to.

Our thanks must go to Sabine, who helped us with so many things before and during the big day, Simone who was wonderful with us for the whole planning of the event (ask her a question and she’ll get you the answer straightaway – (ours last week was what time and frequency does the gondola travel up the mountain, she wasn’t sure so she phoned them up there and then) , our favourite bar manager in the world Karin, the masseuse who fitted us in at short notice after Stefani on Reception amended our booking due to an earlier mix up with timings– thank you Stefani), the excellent maid who did such a lovely job with our room, Sabine’s Father in Law who always checked we were ok every day, the lovely waitress with the long black hair in a pony tail (new this year?) who did so much for us during the reception meal, the chef who cooked our reception meal to perfection – especially the lamb – wow – and all of the other staff on reception and in the restaurant who are too numerous to mention but who always make us feel so welcome. Thank you all.

Finally, if you are unsure about having your hair, make-up, or photographs done by ‘strangers’ on the day don’t worry – the salon and photographer were incredible!

I could tell you a lot more about our wonderful wedding but some of it was a surprise for us too and we wouldn’t want to give too much away but take a large suitcase with you is all we are saying! You’ll have some wonderful presents to bring home from the hotel.

We return in 6 months and can’t wait, and at 7.30am in the morning of our departure Sabine was up waving us goodbye, a sad farewell but a wonderful week yet again at the Hotel Romantik.

Room Tip: We've never had a poor room but ask the hotel if you have special requirements and they'll a...

Second visit to Zell am See, first being in the winter. The hotel is family run, it is spacious and has an air of romance. Clean and friendly, excellent meals. A picnic is also included for you when out and about during the day.The spa and pool are a welcome relief after the hiking and cycling around the local area. Will go back in the future

I have just returned with my wife from a lovely weeks holiday at the Romantik Hotel in Zell Am See.
The only slight downside to the holiday was the slightly inclement weather.
The really upside was the hotel itself which had everything we hoped for before we went. Our first and lasting impression was of a beautiful interior with classic Austrian features but done expertly well and of a very high standard.
We were also delighted with our bedroom which had an enormous four poster bed and a balcony overlooking part of the garden and the mountain range in the background. The bed was certainly the most comfortable one we have ever had abroad and gave us good nights sleep every night.
The restaurant was also very pleasing to the eye and we had a table by the window looking at the outstanding garden which was full of colour and areas you could eat and drink or sunbath on the loungers by the outside part of the swimming pool.
The meals were some of the best and varied food you could wish for and the chef prepared and presented them expertly on the plate. Do not expect the traditional big main meal with a full plate. What you got was a five or six course meal which by the time you had all of them left you full and satisfied.
The house wine was of good quality and cost just under ten euros for half a litre.
The staff in the hotel were all very professional and pleasant and spoke good English. A couple of mentions must go to Stephanie on reception who helped us with some questions that must have sounded too minor to be bothered with but always gave us the answers with a smile. The other mention must be to Karin, the bar chief, who initially looked a little aloof but turned out to be far from aloof and was excellent at making Italian coffees which we frequently had after the evening meal.
Zell am See is a lovely area with the lake and surrounding mountains to enjoy. The Summer Card given to you at reception following your own request to them for it was fabulous. It can and did save a small fortune using it on the cable cars, boat trips and big reductions on the local 'bus service etc..
A final mention must go to the four generations of the Family Horl who were always around the hotel and made you feel a little part of their family by being so friendly and pleasant.
I hope my comments express my enjoyment of this holiday and how good the hotel is in all respects.

Romantik Hotells restaurant lives up to its name and offers a traditional atmosphere in a cosy environment. Our main course was well preparerad and consistant in order to the menu. Desserts was amasing, and is the reason this restaurant gets a 4 instead of a 3. This place is Worth a visit if you are in the area.

We have just returned from a two weeks stay in the Romantik Hotel Zell am See and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The hotel is spacious, comfortable and very clean. The gardens are also well maintained and I'm sure a pleasure to sit in given good weather. (We were not so lucky on this score). The staff are also very helpful and attentive which gives the hotel a very friendly feel. The food was really excellent generally with three choices of main dishes. There was also a salad bar. Some evenings we had a starters buffet and on others a desserts buffet - the strudel buffet was a special favourite. There was always an excellent choice for breakfast.
One huge positive with staying in this hotel is that you will be given a free card entitling you to virtually unlimited use of local cable cars and boats on the lake, discount on the local bus and numerous free entrances. AMAZING!!!
Our only slight negative was that our upgraded room, in the annex, was rather quirky in it's layout and the bathroom, although possibly newish, looked old fashioned. There was no useful English TV (only BBC Prime), although this was to some extent compensated for by excellent free WiFi.
One tip, if given a room in the annex, if and when it rains ask to be shown the underground way to your room.
We loved Zell am See, found it a superb walking centre and look forward to our return visit to both resort and hotel.
