“Nice Hotel in Quiet Part of Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

Family holiday in Zell am See and stopped for a week in the Berner. Very nice and well appointed hotel in the back streets of Zell but only 5 minutes walk to the centre. Excellent room, with a "partial view" of the lake, this means a view of the right hand side of the lake not straight across so that was much better than we expected. Cosy bar area and pleasant dining room; the breakfast was good and varied and a first class evening meal with a cheese board. We didn't use the pool a great deal because of the weather but was nicely set out and the relaxation area and sauna was great.

Service was always excellent an friendly.

Zell itself is a great town but spoilt the week we were there with the presence of the Kuwait to France rally nutters in pumped up American cars cruising around the town all the time making a nuisance of themselves. Would not go to Zell again if I knew that was on.

We stayed at Hotel Berner in July. There were 6 of us - parents plus 4 children ranging from 18 down to 12. Hotel Berner is excellent for cleanliness, friendly service, comfy beds, very nice cakes in the afternoon, lovely warm swimming pool, good sauna area & sun bathing areas, and the food is of a very high standard. The staff are very welcoming & will help in any way they can. We stayed half board - they ask you to choose from the menu in the morning at breakfast but the courses are good with the main dinner course not too filling based on soup, starters, the salad bar & pudding which followed. We as a family are not used to having gormet food so we had fun with tasting new varieties. It may be that the introduction of a childrens menu would be good for the future, but as we had a dairy intolerant 12 year old the staff didn't mind us asking for other things to replace the ice creams etc which was of great benefit to us.
The other thing I would like to add is that booking through Inghams, this hotel offers a Zell am See summer card - this is invaluable if you like to see what the resort has to offer. We saved a small fortune using this card as it let us on to all of the mountain gondolas/ chair lifts free, discounts on buses & attractions etc. Wi-fi is a little patchy in some of the bedrooms but this is minor compared to the lake views you receive when you ask for even a partial lake view with balcony - absolutely stunning & very peaceful. The hotel itself is in an excellent position being in the centre of the village but in a quiet location, 1 street away from the main bus terminus and just a short walk down a reasonable hill to the lake side - the only steepish bit was the driveway outside the hotel which allowed us to stretch our muscles a little on the way back. We will be back hopefully next year to the same hotel - we loved every minute & Zell am See as a resort is excellent for all age groups whether active or not even the 1hr 30mins ride to & from Saltzburg airport was stunningly beautiful. Just one other thing - we found that other restaurants / activity places in & around the area don't take credit cards - as it isn't a cheap place to holiday please make sure you take enough cash with you if you want to do activities or eat out. There are cashpoints if you get stuck though these can be costly when you get the bill back home! Enjoy Zell am See - we wish we were there!

Room Tip: Room with balcony & partial lake view or the suite rooms towards the front of the hotel, the hig...

This is one of the best hotels I have experienced. We had a beautifully appointed room with balcony over looking the lake. The service in Hotel Berner is wonderful and very friendly. The food is amazing. We upgraded to half board because of the extremely high quality of the food which I would rate as 'gourmet'. It is very unusual for us to eat dinner in our hotel but, on this occasion, it was the correct decision, as every night we were presented with a fabulous 5 course dinner. We were made to feel most welcome on arrival and this high level of service and friendliness remained throughout our stay. Hotel Berner is in an ideal location fro exploring the surrounding area being within easy reach of cable car, bus station and train statiion. We would definitely return here as there is a wide range of activities in the area and Hotel Berner is the perfect base. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a junior suite with lake view. Lots of space and lovely balcony.

A good location with great views, the staff make you very welcome. We only stayed B&B so cannot really comment on food, we found the breakfast selection small but enough, the hot buffet is tiny and was not replenished as often as it should. We paid for a suite which was spotless and very modern so worth paying that little bit extra. The spa area is small so imagine when at full capacity in the skiing season it might be a bit of squeeze, luckily for us there were not many quests staying so it was empty. It states the hotel is next to the cable car which it is but if you are a skier you cannot access it directly so you have a 5 minute walk along the street. Would recommend this hotel, will be back one ski season.

Room Tip: Suite on the 2nd floor or above, we had a 1st floor view which cut out the view of the village.

An immediate and very warm welcome from the Berner family when we arrived from Vienna, with complimentary teas whilst we registered, before being shown up to an immaculate lovely room with balcony from which we could enjoy direct views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Very relaxing after the grandeur of imperial Vienna and the transition of our day's rail journey via the stunning engineering of the Semmering pass - immaculate timing and immaculate trains.

But what of Hotel Berner. We booked half board and we couldn't have done better - a good buffet breakfast and 5 course dinner, providing more food than we could either eat or attempt to do so in the lovely traditional dining room - not to mention complimentary cakes in the afternoon if required.

We also received complimentary 'Zell am See - Kaprun cards' for the duration of our stay (worth more than their weight in Gold), giving free access to the mountain lifts, lake cruises/ferries and reduced rates (1 euro) on the excellent local buses, etc.

Our one criticism - the excessive 9 Euro taxi fare for an easily walkable journey from the station (beside the lake), except when you're towing your luggage uphill! But this wasn't the fault of the hotel and we walked on every other occasion.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a room with a view - why else go to the mountains in the summer.

We were there in the end of May. Low season. Quiet, great location, great service. For easy hikers, perfect, just go! Not very children friendly, which is good if you find quiet place. Pool area works, small but enough
