“Great location, but not for the foodies.”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

Great location 100 m from the City Express cable Car. And that is not a brochure 100m. Clean, warm and with a great ski room that has heated boot racks. The rooms are fine with standard German/Austrian separate beds. The location is also perfect for the Apres Ski and shopping for die Frauen. The staff were great, dressed in traditional Tyrolean outfits, and the decor was well, er, traditional. Breakfast is fine, catering for most Gaelic, Anglo Saxon & European tastes, and dinner has a good salad bar. But the food at dinner was generally poor. I've stayed in four separate hotels in Zell am See and I would stay here again, and recommend it mainly for the location. I'd just suggest you go for the B&B option and eat out!

I have been visiting Austrian ski resorts for many years.Austria is my favorite not only for skiing but also spa and sauna facilities.I was in Kaprun last december. Staying at Ogler hotel was a great pleasure due to high quality service, good spa-sauna , a la cart meals and helpful staff. Expecting such satisfying holidays I booked 2 family rooms at Zellamsee Neue Post Hotel. Athough this hotel has a great location and well furnished rooms I got dispointed. Regarding emails sent by the hotel administration I expected 4 menus a la card type.Unfortunately we had buffet menus that were never enough for customers. We never managed to have a square meal.Dinner time was between 18:30-20:00 forcing peaople to make choice between sauna and restaurant. For hard skiers finishing day at 17:00 it is quite possible to miss dinner. We solved the problem by having diner outside although our booking was half-board.Morever hotel staff were always rude and reckless. They tried to make us sit to a table of four but we were a group of six persons. You pay for each items: even slippers were charged to our rooms. We do not recommend this hotel.

Having already read the reviews of this hotel prior to a skiing holiday in January 2012 I have decided to add a few of my own thoughts. The hotel is traditionally rustic and gives the full Austrian experience with staff wearing full traditional dress. The ground floor level compromises of the reception area with a comfy seating area which can be used for wi-fi access, Wi-fi availability in the rooms is limited. To the back of the reception area is a very large bar and seating area which is warm and very relaxing, there is also a small room to the rear of the bar which holds table games for children. The drink prices are reasonable 21€ for a bottle of house red and a large beer is 4.5€. Be warned that a small beer is 3.7€ so go for the large beer every time. Spirits are obviously more but you will get a good measure.
The restaurant is separated in to three dinning rooms, two which are off shoots from the buffet area and one which is an off shoot of the reception area. The breakfast is a traditional continental style buffet consisting of breads, cereals, meat, cheeses and a selection of cold salads and sauces. You can also have boiled eggs and there was a hot selection which was scrambled eggs and Austrian sausages, every day for a week. The hotels website suggests that smoked salmon and sparkling wine are free and available at breakfast, this is available but at a charge.
The evening meal is served between 6-8pm, strict. On your first night a buffet style evening meal will be offered, which was adequate after a long days travel. But if I can be honest with you the meals then go from bad to worse. We travelled in a group of six adults who after a hard days skiing found ourselves either unable to eat the evening meal or opting to go to a near by restaurants. I could bore you with the menu but in a nutshell it is two star. We made several complaints to staff and the manager but were only offered a sandwich as a replacement, which was a roll from the breakfast buffet.
Please be warned that if you decide to open a room bill at the dinning table for wine etc that this bill has to be checked before you retire for the evening. Otherwise the staff assume you have accepted and agreed the invoice and there is no return. We found that after settling our room bill extra drinks had been added.
The boot room is in the cellar and is clean and drying facilities are more than adequate. There is only one bench to get your boots on which seats two people so sometimes you have to wait your turn. Access to the street is through a pass code controlled door which then leads to a tricky flight of stairs to the street. The walk to the first lift it slightly up hill and takes between 5-10 minutes.
The wellness facilities are probably the best part of this hotel and well worth the money. Great swimming pool and hot tub, with sauna, wet room and others in a different area.
As mentioned before we travelled in a group of six and this meant three people to each room. We paid an extra supplement as the rooms were advertised to sleep up to four people. What a laugh! Our room was what they classed as a two bedroomed chalet. This consisted of one Austrian style double bedroom which had no storage facility just a few shelves dotted on the walls. The bathroom was a shower and sink only. The toilet was in a separate room. The alleged second bathroom was the lounge area which held a fridge, TV, two arm chairs and a wardrobe. The bed was an old pull out sofa bed, which the staff hadn't even set up. Truth be known you probably couldn't pull it out due to the lack of space.
Both rooms had access to a balcony which looked out on to the mountains, very nice. The rooms heating comes from very large towel rails in the shower room which had no temperature control. These towel rails are also the drying area for your ski clothes. Sometimes the room can got a bit hot and steamy through this.
The hotel is set smack bang in the middle of the town and is next to a lovely Italian restaurant. Opposite there is an outside bar run by the Italian restaurant and I would advise Après in the bar for one or two beers and you can also order a pizza for 9€ which they bring to you in the bar. Perfect after a hard days skiing. There a plenty of near by shops for general shopping or presents. There is enough bars and discos to keep you happy for a week.
Staff here are very helpful and speak good English.
To summarise a nice traditional hotel with four star facilities, probable best if two people share a room and no more unless they have a guarantee of a larger room. Food is terrible so either book bed and breakfast or be prepared to pick through what is edible on a two star menu.

Just back from a ski trip to Zell am see. Stayed @ the Hotel Neue Post. Booked all through directski. Wasn't 100% sure after reading some of the reviews but I'm glad I booked it now. Its only 200m from the gondola, pubs & restaurants. Has a ski room for the ski's & boots under the hotel.
The hotel itself is very nice. Food was good. We ate there every night except 2 (apres ski's fault not the hotel's). Staff in the bar & restaurant were very friendly. Nothing seemed too much trouble.
Rooms were comfortable. Water pressure in the shower could have been a bit stronger but that's being a bit picky.
Used the pool and jaccuzzi a couple of evenings. Kept very clean. Pool was maybe a couple of degrees cooler than I would like but considering it is an outdoor pool and the temp was between -8 & -14 I wouldn't hold that against them.
There were 8 in our group and everyone was impressed with this hotel. All would stay here again if back in Zell am See.

Hotel Neue Post is located right in the heart of Zell am See town, just a short 5-min walk from the ski lifts.

Designed as a cosy, old-styled Austrian lodge, Hotel Neue Post does exude warmth with the wooden interior and rich-coloured curtains and tapestry - even the hotel staff are dressed in the traditional Austrian costumes.

The room itself was well-maintained, but clearly dated. We opted for a double room, and as much as they wee kind enough to push the two single beds together, they didn't have double covers and duvets. There doesn't seem to be enough light in the room with the dark carpet and curtains, and the lighting in the room was purely functional (no mood lighting - either bright ceiling/wall lights or none at all).

The bathroom was disappointing - very 70's, dated, and small. The shower room was tiny, and floods whenever you take a shower.

We went for the half-board option and the food was pretty good, except for the first night, when the beef was more akin to a shoe sole. The food did get progressively better and the New Year's eve special was great.

The staff were exceptional - very friendly and helpful.

The location has got to be the best thing about it. We didn't get to try any of the restaurants in town, but there are plenty of them within minutes' walk of the hotel. There are also a couple of convenience stores nearby should you require groceries. Castle Bar right opposite is great for apres-ski.

Although we only had one day of sunshine, the skiing was excellent and being able to ski down and amble back to the hotel is just too easy.

If we were to return to Zell am See, we would probably explore other options for accommodation.

We stayed a week at Neue Post, having traded through RCI. We had been travelling through the Tirol for about three weeks by then, staying in various resort towns in small inns and Gasthofs. Up to that point, we had really enjoyed our accomodations. Then we checked in to the Neue Post. First, they hit us with parking at 9 Euros a day, then a final cleaning charge of 95 Euros. True, RCI did say in the fine print that there might be a parking cost and there was a cleaning charge, but didn't say how much. While an additional $225 didn't break the bank, it was certainly an unwelcome surprise!

Then we got our unit, a one bedroom apartmen on the first floor right over the bar. No view. The apartment decor was very tired and the unit was in serious need of renovation. Cracked plaster, caulking that had long since passed its useful life, a sink faucet that was about to come out of the counter, plastic shower curtains and a shower head that sprayed in all directions. We couldn't find any plates, pans or cooking utensils until someone came up an unlocked a cabinet. Everything was the cheapest quality it possibly could have been; they still had to keep THAT under lock and key? Yikes!

The hotel bar never opened so far as we could tell, probably because the vast majority of the guests were Muslim. We learned that Zell am See started marketing itself heavily to the Midddle East about 10-15 years ago, and it has paid off with a huge influx of visitors from the Arab world - probably the majority of tourists (at least in the summer). This was merely unexpected, and the sight of so many women in full burkhas was quite a juxtaposition from what we had been experiencing throughout the Tirol up to that point. Many of the local restaurants cater to Muslim tastes (kebab pizza!) and some menus were in Arabic. It wasn't hard to tell which restaurants were for the locals and which were catering to the Muslims. We never sensed any tensions at all; it was just, well, interesting.

The Neue Post has a nice spa area on the lower level, complete with saunas, steam, infrared, various shower therapies. We used it regularly and it was nearly always empty probably because the majority of the hotel's guests did not feel comfortable with the nudist aspect of the spa.

We had one breakfast at the hotel (it was free the first day), but it was nothing special and rather expensive otherwise. We found a few nice Austrian restaurants in town with good food and good beer.

Zell am See itself is nothing special, but it's a great base for heading out on excursions. The trip up to the reservoirs above Kaprun was great. The Grossglockner Highway on a nice day is not to be missed. Bad Gastein, Lofer and Maria Alm, Kitzbuhel, Krimml Falls are all within a 90 minute drive and all terrific day trips. We couldn't imagine what we would have done for a week in Zell am See if we didn't have a car.

We've stayed in timeshares all over the world and cannot understand how Neue Post gets a 4-Star rating. Perhaps its central location a half block from the pedestrian zone and its spa are enough. Otherwise, the hotel was run down, uninviting and uncomfortable. No place to wash clothes, so the balconies all had laundry hanging out (as did ours). There were lots of families, and while we are accostomed to the general commotion that often accompany families, the noise here was really excessive. Lots of kids screaming and running up and down the halls until about 9-10:00 each night. Much more yelling in the rooms than we've ever encountered before.

Oh, and one other thing, there's a nightclub down at the main street end of the hotel that's open until about 3:00 a.m. We were mid-hotel, but the pounding music could be heard (and felt) even where we were. Heaven forbid you get a room near the disco - you won't sleep at all on the nights it's open!
