We stayed for a week half board in Feb 09 and thought the hotel was excellent. We paid extra for one of the "suite" rooms which are in a building opposite the main hotel (connected via an underground passage) and it was well worth paying extra. The rooms were fabulous and massive. Chocolates on the beds every night and fresh towels everyday. The hotel has a large ski locker room which we found better than previous hotels. The location for the slopes is excellent as you can ski almost all the way back (about 50m), alternatively if you dont want to ski back, there is a ski bus stop also about 50m from the hotel. The ski area was good, although as intermediate skiiers, by the second to last day we had skiied the entire mountain, and so, to be fussy, we would have like a larger ski area. It is worth getting the ski bus (free) to Kaprun for a day or two.

The hotel facilities were good and having an outdoor pool was a novelty. We did not find the bar noisy at all, if anything, it was very quiet. But, this was to be expected as the hotel is located about 10mins from the main town where there are plenty of livlier bars (our favourites being Crazy Daisy's and Gin House). In general we found Austria very smokey. The hotel restaurant was a bonus being non smoking. The food in the hotel was good - very traditional and there was always more than enough.

The village of Zell am see was stunning and has a lot of character. It keeps you fit walking back up to the hotel from the town after a few drinks! Every week they have an Apres Ski festival in the town centre and also a freestyle ski/board night where nutters do huge jumps off one of the runs back to the gondola! There is plenty to keep entertained.

We went with Neilson and thought the rep (Kate) was fantastic. The transfer and pick up was smooth and she was very informative about the mountain and was in the hotel every day in case we had any questions.

I would definately reccommend Zell am see and hotel Waldhof. I didnt want to leave and want to go back!!

Hotel was nice and food very good with good selection. Location for skiers perfect as we could ski back to the hotel and only had to walk about 50 yards to put skis on. This obviously depending on amount of snow. However there is no lounge and the bar area was noisy if you wanted to relax and very smokey. The staff were mostly very friendly however we had problem with noise from the bar as the music was left on all night (a reception closed and door to bar locked so we could not turn off. Reception thought we were just moaners and did not take our complaint seriously until several complaint and threaten to contact the travel agency to chance hotel. It was sorted and we switched room and had perfect sleep after that.

We stayed here for a week in February 2009 on a skiing holiday. Having read the reviews on the hotel we were really looking forward to our stay and were not disappointed. Most of staff were very helpful and friendly, with a special mention to Gabriella who was fantastic. The restaurant was excellent, the rooms were fairly spacious warm and comfortable, the ensuite bathrooms were good and the leisure facilities excellent. The hotel is very close to a ski bus stop (less than 5 minutes' ride to the slopes) and to walk downhill into the centre of town takes 10-15 minutes.

But, excellent as the hotel is, we felt there was something missing. A few little niggles like self-service coffee at breakfast rather than having a pot of coffee served at the table, having to pay for hiring bath robes for the week, machine dispensed juice drink rather than 'proper' juice at breakfast. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but some minor irritations made the Waldhof very good rather than special.

The hotel bar, as other reviewers have pointed out, could be a bit quiet in the evenings but this is probably as a result of being outside the town centre and, on balance, I'd prefer to stay slightly out of town.

I would definitely recommend the Waldhof and would have no hesitation about returning.

Slightly off topic. I have to agree with JonesAndCo. We travelled with Crystal and it was an experience not to be repeated - the resort rep was useless and gave us false information on the skiing packages we'd booked which he later denied. He then had the audacity to attempt to 'extort' more money from us for ski lessons we had already paid for!!

The first thing I must say is that this hotel is one of the best we've stayed in from a number of points of view - food quality and range; bedrooms and particularly the staff - they were always helpful, attentive and friendly. The full board seemed attractive at first but by the end of the week we were dying for a change of eating scene.

The downside of the hotel is the lack of a lounge. There was no quiet place to read, chat or play games. After staying in the dining room until the staff were clearing up around us, the only refuge was the bar but there was usually a disco or piped music playing. And other than the dining room there was no public non-smoking area to escape to - the Austrians have yet to catch up with most of Europe!

The holiday was booked through Crystal and it took us a few hours to recover from the suicidal ride in a mini-bus from Salzburg. And at the end of the week tbey forgot to pick us up!
I passed on this information to Crystal and they said they'd investigate but after a few weeeks I had to remind them.

Crystal - never again!

we stayed at the waldhof in june 08 under the all inclusive deal,we expected similar in january but obviously only half board..have to say we were a little dissapointed with the food,it was a fixed menu every night with no buffet nights and no extra's like the kitchen parties they do in the summer.also they have a massive pile of bread rolls that i can only imagine 50% of them end up in the bin,it would have been nice if they offered a pack up service so you can make a midday snack like again they do in the summer.
as for apres ski, well every night we went to the bar we were the ONLY people in the bar! again in the summer it was very busy and lively every night...
the hotel itself was still excellent, great rooms and great location for the ski bus and a blue run to the back door,we were just a little dissapoined with the food and drink side of things but dont let this put you off, maybe we were just spoiled in the summer! if you like zell in the winter you will LOVE it in the summer.

also would have been nice for them to offer wi-fi..

We have been to this hotel already 3 times (2005, 2006 and 2007). This property, run by the owner itself is all what you need for a perfect ski vacation. Nicely located (50m) from a ski bus stop that takes you within 1 minute to the base station of Schmittenhoehe. There is a path behind the hotel to ski-in at the end of your day in the wonderfull Europe Ski Region.
Every time we went was at the end of the ski season, on which the hotel provides an all-in formula - including apres-ski. The hotel has two buildings that are connected with a tunnel.
Great place to be with kids as well. They have a separate room to have fun, while the older 'kids' have fun in the bar.
The kitchen provides excellent food, super friendly staff, clean rooms, clean accomodation area.
This year we are going skiing in Italy - and I know already, I will miss this 'ambiance'.

We had a great weeks skiing in zell am see and a great stay at the waldhof. The staff were so lovely and the buffet at dinner and breakfast were amazing, much better than we experienced in other ski resorts. The rooms are large and spotless and they have under floor heating in the bathrooms! make sure to request rooms in the new part of the hotel as ones in the older part arent great. only downside was the tiny whirlpool!! they could do with a large one!!

all in all a lovely austrian alpine hotel!!
