We were really warmly welcomed and offered two drinks. The room was spacey, warm, quiet -even though the hotel is in the center of the village- and decorated in the Austrian traditional way. There was a lively outdoor bar and the restaurant was really gourmet. The breakfast was more than good and the overall service was friendly and professional.

We booked the Zum Hirschen hotel in Zell am See as we were able to get a family room for a short ski break stay during the February half term school holiday instead of the normal 7 night stays.

Our room was comfortable with a balcony and distant view of the lake (across the roof tops!) but it was quiet without any street noise.

We booked half board and both breakfast and evening meal were very good.

Location wise, the hotel is in a convenient location, a few minutes walk from the ski lifts and at the start of the pedestrian area in the town centre.

When our party of four arrived, we were told that they had accidentally over-booked. Normally this would have created a problem, but instead we were comped the top-floor apartment- a beautiful room with a great panoramic view of the Lake and the surrounding Alps. The restaurant service was excellent, however the food was a little pricy. The location of the hotel is very easy to find with the ally to the garage being right off the main thoroughfare. Also, a variety of restaurants, shops, landmarks and a grocery store is all within literally a stone's throw. The Lake is also just a few minutes downhill walk. My stay in this beautiful hotel and magnificent town made me want to retire here. You cannot go wrong with this hotel.

Nice hotel with good food but we were kept awake every night until 4am by people shouting in the street directly outside hotel. Then at 5.30am a lorry would deliver outside with bottles being wheeled down the pedestrian street. At 7.30 am church bells and heavy traffic noise. It's a real shame as the hotel itself was ideal, but I was so tired by the end of the week.

We arrived at the hotel after spending three nights in Vienna, and were looking forward to some peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the Austrian capital. We didn't exactly get the peace and quiet, as there is quite a lot of traffic noise from the main street, but it didn't spoil our stay too much. There was more of a problem for two other guests we spoke to who had rooms above the hotel disco, as they were disturbed by noise.
Our room was on the second floor and was spacious with a large bathroom which included "his and hers" sinks. We had a balcony, but the view from it was of the adjacent hotel, but we could glimpse the mountains from either side of the balcony. Unlike some other reviewers, we did not find the bed particularly hard and we both slept well here. The room was spotless and all the areas of the hotel were very clean. There was TV and a fridge in the room and no objections to you filling it with your own supplies, although the hotel charge for disposing the empties. Best to dispose of your own, as long as you do it properly. Best place for stocking up on essential supplies is the local Billa store, good quality provisions at very reasonable prices.
The hotel is family run and the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We were allocated the same table for breakfast and evening meal. Breakfast was buffet type with a good choice of meats and cheese, fruit, yogurts etc. On request you can have cooked eggs and we had excellent omelettes on two days of our stay. The evening meal consists of five courses. The main courses were a little limited for choice as there seemed to be a lot of pork on offer, but the quality and presentation of the food could not be faulted. We enjoyed all our meals. One day we returned to the hotel for lunch and had goulash suppen, which was superb and also good value.
We visited the spa area every day. The pool is small, but it was nice to have a dip after spending the day walking or sightseeing in the heat. The sauna was also on the small side but we enjoyed the facilities. There are no changing facilities in the spa area and you need to ask at reception for towelling bathrobes, which are delivered very promptly to your room. You can then change in your room and wear the bathrobes to visit the spa.Towels are provided in the spa area and there is a good supply.
Zell am See is picturesque and it is pleasant to walk around the lake and also to take a boat trip on it. Cable cars/ski lifts are close. We spent most of the day on the Schmittenhohe Mountain and the views from the top are fantastic. We bought a combination ticket which included the cable cars for the mountain and a boat trip on the lake - saves you a few Euros rather than paying for each separately.
Overall, we thought the hotel was very good, food quality was also good and we would have no qualms about staying at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor, but not over the disco.
