“Lovely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2013

I stayed here for two nights in Feb 2013 and must say the hotel and my room itself was fantastic. I can see how this hotel has one design award, the size of the rooms and the positioning of every piece of furniture has been very carefully planned and executed to ensure ease of use.
I only used the hotel restaurant for breakfast which was nice, fresh and healthy - please do not expect a full english as you will not find one in this hotel. The restaurant prices for dinner looked quite high, and the bar prices are not as cheap as nearby bars, but as I was traveling on business and with colleagues we had arranged to eat dinner in Zell Am See.
In the evenings check out Crazy Daisies which is a live music bar a short taxi ride away for a great party atmosphere and decently priced drinks.
English travelers may be surprised to find there are no English speaking TV channels available, this was not an issue for me as I was happy to enjoy the stunning views from my balcony but may bother others.
Also like most European hotels there are no tea making facilities in the room.
Tip: order the breakfast in bed it is amazing.

There are two parts of the hotel, the family hotel directed at families with kids and the balance hotel (formerly marketed under MAVIDA). You need to keep this in mind when reading reviews and making a booking.

We were happy with our stay, the services offered, pleasant and not crowded spa and the access to nearby skiing. The restaurant is excellent and we enjoyed a wide selection of well-prepared and tasty food. The head-waiter Manuel deserves a special mention for being particularly knowledgeable and attentive. The hotel manager passed by for a chat several evenings.

Small criticisms: The ski equipment room is accessible towards the outside only by a steep stair case and the lobby does not feel really inviting - it was empty most of the time.

This hotel is a kinderhotel so means that its for people with young kids. That can lead to lots of noise and sometimes having other peoples children (or even parents) wandering by in their swimming trunks and bathrobes when you are having your evening dinner. If you like that kind if environment then this is a great place. If you dont fancy seeing posh families spoil their kids, then maybe not.

The rooms are very good - clean, modern, well equipped and serviced every day. Facilities in hotel include spas for the whole family and then also just for adults (well thats the rule, but you do see parents brining their kids in for some reason, and that is annoying). The kids club is very well equipped and has good hours so there is chance to have some peace.

Skiing is very good and nearby and there is excellent shuttle service to lifts, back and forth very quickly and really helpful driver. Lessons and equipment rental can be done in hotel.

Food is very good with adult and kids menu and all day long snacks, drinks. Service is good in restaurant and they have kids chairs etc., but as i wrote if you want a quiet dinner then that wont happen.

Couple of points would be that website isnt great - little english info, hard to navigate and lacks some detail (they actually have a fitness gym even though no mention on website). Also no wifi in rooms, just a weak signal at reception that keeps breaking down, so everyone is there trying to grab a signal and download emails. Kids dinner in club isnt great as they only have limited offer and no vegetables or salads there, just the unhealthy stuff which is a pity. Ski-keller is also cramped and chaotic. All the same though its a very pleasant and nice place so would recommend.

We liked the total child friendliness of the hotel, its setup and the fact that kids can be taken to and picked up from the kiddies club at any time between opening hours without prior notice. Staff in the club was very encouraging and seemed genuinely to like their work and children in general, something that is not always that obvious over here in the UK. Grown ups are catered for mostly by the Spa in the sister Hotel and the beautiful surroundings - but as the Hotel (and its food) is predominantly targeted at kids - less so in terms of grown-up-holiday experiences (drinks, bar, etc). We found the food average at best by Austrian standards, the one time we went for a meal outside the hotel was the most memorable foodie moment of our 1 week's trip. Service is very friendly and attentive (probably down to the fact that service culture still exists in Austria, and waiters are professional waters and take some price in what they do). The bottom line though for us was that the kids were happy and could be parked for the odd hour in the club and hence only enabled us to not worry about the everyday duties that normally evolve around them, which made relaxation for us actually possible.

Room Tip: Make sure you are a happy early riser, use earplugs or actually go to church every morning - the chu...

Having read the review "May work for many..." I thought I should write a review and say that I agree, if total kid focused holiday is not what you are after then the Hagleitner is certainly not the place for you.

If however you love the Kinderhotel concept then it is a very good place to holiday. Granted the location is distinctly suburban and the hotel plot is not that large but the advantages are that cashpoints, chemists as well as buses/chairlifts are close by. The disadvantage is that it doesn't have that "sound of music" alpine feel of remoteness. For us it didn't matter, the views of the mountain/s surrounding Lake Zell were enough to wow us and it was easy to get up the mountains or visit the hotel's lakeside meadow by bike (borrowed from the hotel) for total peace and quiet.

Although the site is not large, it is very well designed use of with a good outdoor pool, sand pit, swings, zip wire and bouncy castle. There is a marvellous kids club on 2 floors as well as basement swimming pools for families and for adults as well as a quite superb spa shared with the adults Mavida Hotel. More than enough to keep our 3 children happy for a week.

The Kids Club was excellent and we were very impressed by the kindness and energy of the staff there who genuinely seemed to be having a lot of fun. The kids loved going there and although in the minority that didn't speak German were included in everything and enjoyed the disco and the excellent Peter Pan production laid on for parents on the Friday night.

Food was greatly improved since our visit in June 2008 and we all enjoyed meals there. The staff were really friendly from booking through to our departure. The recent renovations meant the rooms were really first class (previously we thought that the rooms were the most basic of any kinderhotels we had been too).

And in our 2 visits we have had pretty good weather. The kids would love to go again and so would we. All in all a very good hotel and a very enjoyable week.

This was our first, and probably last attempt, at the increasingly popular and wide-spread "Kinder-Hotel" concept in Germany and Austria. And it didn't take long into our 8 day summer stay at Hotel Hagleitner in the picturesque, if somewhat tourist-scarred Zell am See, for me to develop the theory underpinning the Kinder-Hotel's popularity in this part of the world: Germany (I know it's Austria, but let's not get technical, and culturally there is really no difference) just isn't very child-friendly. These hotels are the only places you can stay with children without forever feeling guilty that the gentle gurgling of your offspring may be disrupting your fellow traveller's afternoon routine of coffee and cake at the table next to you. Nowhere is this exemplified more than by the extistence of Hagleitner's ajoining sister hotel, Mavida, which brands itself as a design hotel, and caters very much to the opposite clientele.

Let me therefore direct my words at giving potential future guests of this hotel the kind of enlightenment I would have appreciated before we booked. This hotel is all about the kiddies. And they are everywhere, all the time. Adult time can really only be found in the Mavida's extensive spa, which is excellent. The grounds are decent, if a little cramped, but the lake is neither in sight, nor within reasonable reach. However, the hotel does share a private property on the lake, which can be reached 20 minutes by  bike or car, and was a much preferred alternative to the moderately sized pool in the hotel. The kids club is as good as one would expect, with very structured programmes throughout the entire day. This is useful, if your intention is to give the kids away all day (as may very well be appropriate for older children), but less convenient, if - like us - you only need a few hours of child care a day. Food is excellent most of the time, but again there are no separate dining times for children and adults. Indeed, dinner finishes at 8:30pm, so the few times we did try to get our angel to bed before we sat down to dine, we were challenged to still be served at all. Staff do their best to be friendly and helpful, though at times seem overwhelmed as there are just not enogh of them. Not surprising that the poor girl I saw cleaning windows before a full dinner service the same day called it quits the following day. Also not surprising that the general lack of staff results in a system of slightly odd rules, whereby dinner choices need to be made over breakfast, and if you miss the 2pm deadline to bid for an outside terrace table at dinner, you're confined to the indoor glass-covered restaurant which could easily also function as a sauna.

So, overall, a well-run, structured and kid-centric place with excellent food and spa and quaint, if over-run alpine sorroundings, that should definitely make those people happy who enjoy the complete freedom of a guilt-free holiday in Germany/Austria despite having children. It's a care-free oasis for families surrounded by a landscape that tends to see the nippers as a nuisance. And that, I'm afraid, is why it didn't work for us. We would rather spend our family time in an environment that caters for both big and small without the need for family ghettos.
