“Great Hotel and a Great Value!”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

For the EUR 59 I reserved my room for I had limited expectations, given that Zell am See is a tourist destination and that it is high season. In the end, I was more than pleasantly surprised by what I received at the Hotel Steinerwirt.

This hotel could not be more centrally located. It is right on the main square of the town. This usually means parking problems. Not here. They have a dedicated lot a block away. And, it's free. How many hotels still offer that? Not many, in my experience. The hotel itself and the room I was given were very nice. They are decorated something along the lines of an art gallery you might find in NYC or San Francisco. At first, this might seen a bit strange in Austria. I quickly grew to like it, though, as there is definitely enough of the traditional Alpine mountain chalet look everywhere else. The room did not have air conditioning. But, even in August it really was not so hot that I missed it.

Despite the very reasonable room price, breakfast was included. I was also very good. The meal was offered in one of the hotel's restaurants, which was very nicely decorated with pictures from Tibet. Having visited Tibet twice, I particularly liked this. The whole hotel seemed to reflect the character of the owners in a very thoughtful manner. After staying there, I kind of wanted to meet them. They are must be interesting people.

Finally, even the service and the extras offered with the room are exceptional. During breakfast, there was a smiling girl who came around to ask if I needed anything else. The girl at the front desk spoke perfect English and was always ready with a good answer for any question. An attractive rooftop terrace and Jacuzzi are included. All-in-all, a bargain price for a top notch hotel. I tend to be a bit critical when it comes to hotels, but this place really impressed me.

Thank you very much for your detailed description of your stay at Steinerwirt, especially about the art work. We invested a lot of time, research (and money) in order to carefully pick each piece, and your compliments are a very rewarding sign of recognition for us. We are very happy that you enjoyed your time with us! When you come to Austria again, please stop by.

Kind regards & many greetings,
Johannes Schwaninger

What a wonderful stay we had again at the Steinerwirt in Zell am See. The place has even further improved. It is now save to assume that the Restaurant, as well as the hotel in particular are the very first choice in the region.

The cuisine, as a matter of fact, is indeed exceptional, we had not had any meal that was beyond “very good”, be it the scrambled eggs for breakfast, be it the delicious roasted duck, the braised beef, or the inevitable “Schnitzel with noodles” for the children. – Chef Dietl and his marvelous staff know how to make a treat even of – at first sight – trivial meals. Simon, the seasoned and highly educated Maître d’hôtel, intrigued us with his conjuring trick that even made my wife admire my drinking skills, substantially developed by virtue of Simon’s wine list.

We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed an unforgettable morning at the beach before easing back to "our" Steinerwirt for another feast.

The clubby atmosphere encourages liasing and soon an inspiring discussion on the Magic Flute and Tannhauser had spun off with guests on the neighbouring table. Dearest Schwaninger family, joyfully we greeted thee, sadly we had to leave again ... until next time.

Just got back home after spending five nights in Steinerwirt. After spending a week in tiny hotel rooms across Europe where you could barely open your suitcase I was so happy to see the spacious room we had. The hotel was clean, stylish and modern with some traditional elements here and there. The location of the hotel is ideal, really close to everything. Our windows were to the back of the building so there were no disturbing noise (except the church bells...). Excellent friendly service and rich breakfast buffet where you can make your own waffles! Zell am See Kaprun Summer card was included in the price. The card gives free entrance to several attractions including free use of the ski lifts. There is also a rooftop terrace to relax and sunbathe plus a jaguzzi which was just perfect after spending the day hiking in the mountains. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to everyone. I enjoyed.

As part of our Austrian holiday last summer we have decided to spend some time in Zell am See. The selection of hotels and pensions is rather vast there and choosing might be difficult as many places are often booked well in advance.
We were therefore very lucky to get place in this excellently located hotel. At first we were a little doubtful about staying on the main road but our room was facing the other side and even the other facilities were very quiet.
After the first day we knew that staying only two nights would not be enough and were pleasantly surprised that extension of our stay was not problem at all.
Our room was absolutely spotless and I have hardly ever seen more imaginative setting of a hotel room-stylish yet practical.
Breakfast buffet was rich with a choice for everyone and our plentiful breakfast usually kept us going till the dinner. The best were the dinners though. We have stayed for the first night and had troubles to find a better place so we came back for two more evenings. Food was traditional but with a modern hint and their "tafelspitz" was the best we have ever tasted. Service in the restaurant as well as in the rest of the hotel was smiley and always willing to help.
Those 5 nights we have stayed at last were the most memorable of our holiday. I am already looking forward to be back.

Thank you for recommending us on Tripadvisor! When we re-launched the hotel in 2006, we had a clear vision in mind: to provide alpine vacations out of the ordinary, to create an open-minded and friendly atmosphere, and to offer high quality service. Your review for us is a sign, that we are on the right track. We will be happy to welcome you again at Steinerwirt!

We had a perfect first family ski trip to Zell am See and hotel Steinerwert. The hotel is welcoming, funky and had delicious food. We were well looked after and the rooms were basic but clean, comfy and spacious. We are booking to go back!

Thank you very much for your nice recommendation. When my wife and I started to run Steinerwirt, we never imagined that we would so popular with families - especially with small children. It turns out that many of our guests like the funky aspects of Steinerwirt. And the food, of course :)

We hope to see you again in the future and will do our best to make your next stay even more enjoyable!

Good size room, but bathroom is very small. Windows don't seem to isolate street noise well, as hotel is on a main road it can be quite noisy. Staff is very friendly and polite. Position is central, 5min walk to slopes. Meal service could be more efficient at times. Missing mini bar or fridge in a room. They have option to borrow DVDs, though our player wasn't connected and it was struggle to take TV from the wall and do it ourselves. After which sound and picture quality was very poor. But I guess not so important as we came to ski here, but all channels are in German so it would be nice to have an option to have a lazy night in with a movie. They could improve ventilation in a ski storage room, cos it becomes very stuffy at the end of the day.

I am happy that you had a pleasant stay and I really thank you for our suggestions! We are already preparing a major upgrade to our TV systems for the summer season, so all rooms will have digital cable and a wide range of international channels. Also, we are considering upgrading our DVD players, since a growing number of our guests enjoy watching DVDs. Ventilation in the ski locker room is an issue which has not been pointed out to us before, so we are really glad you mentioned it. Since the ski room is located inside the building with no window to the outside, this is a bit tricky, but we will search for a solution. A fridge in the room is a feature that we hear occasionally about and we have looked into the matter before. Unfortunately, these mini fridges consume a lot of energy and are not very friendly to the environment. I hope to welcome you again next winter so you can enjoy the new amenities!

Kind regards,
Johannes Schwaninger

With its unique design and extremely delicious suppers, Hotel Steinerwirt is life time experience. As 25 people of a group, we enjoyed very single moment during our stay. It is located just in downtown Zell am See with a few minutes walking distance to bars and cafes. Rooms are very comfortable. Beds and quilts are very very comfortable. Breakfast could be improved but still meets expectations. Open jacuzzi and sauna is very relaxing. Stuff is very friendly and helpful. If I visit Zell am See again, I would defiantly stay in this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for bigger rooms, they have some small rooms

Thank you very much for recommending us so enthusiastically. I happily return the compliment - you and your friends are really a cool group! By the way, Austrian Airlines just started to offer direct flights from Istanbul to Salzburg Airport (which is only 85 km from Zell am See) - in the future, it will be even easier to get here.

See you again & best regards,
