“Great place for families - and the hotel dinner is a delight”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

We went back to Ellmau again after 23 years spent mostly going to the French Alps. We had taught our younger children to ski there and wanted to see how things had changed. The Pension Claudia is right opposite the nursery slopes and friendly efficient ski school, so if you are looking for facilities like that, this is a winner. The Claudia is part of the larger Hotel Hochfilzer, 250 metres down the street. You get B&B at Claudia where most of the rooms are pleasant and comfortable with mountain and slope facing balconies (try to avoid the basement rooms which do have windows, but are also too close to the boot room where nosy early skiiers could break your sleep). After a buffet breakfast (nothing hot on offer though), you can get straight out on to the slopes opposite, and then the whole Wilder Kaiser world opens up for you. There is also a ski bus service, and a funicular railway to take you up to the top of the mountain. After good active days, dinner is taken at the main Hotel Hochfilzer, which is family run by the warm and friendly Frau Ingrid Hochfilzer and her family. This is a delight with a wide ranging menu (which you choose earlier at breakfast) and served with good wine by friendly staff who speak English. The evenings are mostly rounded off with varied musical entertainment in the large bar area. The lovely hotel also has an indoor swimming pool and outdoor sauna for your use, and a supervised children's room. Ellmau is a splendid family resort, with packages bookable direct or through Inghams, and gives you all the wonderful atmosphere of Austrian skiing at its best.

We stayed at the Claudia as a family with friends, a group of 7. We had a wonderful winter wonderland Xmas. The rooms were very comfortable (we had 2 larger rooms, a double room and a single). Everyone was comfortable and no one was cramped, even when we all gathered together in the larger rooms we had enough room to be comfortable. The rooms are spread over various floors and some rooms have balconies. If you get a room at the back o the building there are wonderful views of the spectacular Wilder Kaiser mountains- quite amazing to wake up to in the morning.
We had half board when we stayed there. Breakfast was at the Claudia, a buffet and no end of delicious food. Cereals, yoghurt, fruit, various breads, boiled eggs, cheeses and cold meats. Plenty of food to get you set for a great day on the slopes. Dinner was at the Hotel Hochfilzer up the road a bit, not too far to walk. Dinner there was another amazing experience, there were at least 4 courses every night. We were there for Xmas week and there was a very special celebration on Xmas eve for all the guests of the hotel and Claudia.
The staff at both places were so friendly and accommodating I imagine they have many returning visitors. There are spas, heated pool and saunas available to all guests there as well.
The Claudia is very well located as it is just across the road from the nursery slopes and not far from the ski lifts too. Our ski school and ski hire place was just nearby too so we didn't have to lug our gear around town.
One drawback is that there was no wifi at Claudia but most Cafes have it and a short walk to the hotel and it was available there too.
We loved our time at Ellmau and were very comfortable and very well looked after at the Claudia we can't wait to return.

This was our second visit to the Claudia, the first being 11 years ago. It is owned by the Hochfilzer family, and is run as a cheaper subsidiary to their main hotel (the Hotel Hochfilzer) in the centre of the village. We booked this time through Inghams - excellent value. We hardly ever go to the same place twice for fear it will disappoint the second time. It didn't.
As before we experienced first class service from friendly staff and thoroughly enjoyed the Hochilzer's excellent cuisine. Ok, it's a little way up the street to the Hotel Hochfilzer for evening meals, use of pool, jacuzzis, saunas etc (all part of the package), but it wasn't much of an inconvenience. We only booked a small room, and though it was a little cramped (as we anticipated) it had everything we needed, including a small balcony under the eaves - particularly useful for airing sweaty boots!
We thoroughly recommend it.

We stayed at the Pension Claudia which is part of the Hotel Hochfilzer, and is located towards the end of Ellmau in a pretty location. The pension is set in its own grounds with comfortable seating and loungers. The views to the front are lovely, and the 'Wilder Kaiser' mountain range fills the stair windows admirably.

The building is of an age but has been modernised, and is clean and welcoming. One mystery is that although there is a no smoking policy, there does seem to be a faint whiff of cigarette smoke when you enter the property. Nothing bad, but strange.

Our room was clean, with Austrain twinn beds, a spacious living area, ensuite facilities and a balcony with a great view. The rooms were cleaned every day whilst we were at breakfast.

Breakfast is continental style with meats, cheese, eggs spreads, great breads and cereals etc. The friendly staff speak excellent English, but as always a little of the local language is met with enthusiasm.

Evening meals are taken at the Hochfilzer hotel, a short walk up the road and you have full access to that hotels facilities, a real bonus. Just ask at the hotel reception and they will advise you.

One point is that there is no real communal area in the pension and in bad weather this means either retreating to your room, or preferably the hotels lovely wellness centre!

One problem my partner had, was the location to the Ellmau Alm, next door which on a Friday had a 'late revellers' problem. I slept through most of it however and it was a one off.

An excellent choice, in a good location. We will be back in January for the Skiing.

Room Tip: The front rooms get the sun and have the benefit of the alpine views.

Excellent value Pension in a pretty location toward end of village Evening meals taken at main Hochfilzer Hotel a short walk away - where leisure facilities are also available. Excellent food and choice - with friendly, helpful service. Breakfast buffet served at Pension where there is a pretty garden. The village is set in beautiful surroundings - great for walkers of all ages and abilities. Many other activities/excursions available.
Like myself MANY guests return year after year - appreciating the welcome of the staff - and the "homely" atmosphere.

Room Tip: Single room has balcony and lovely view

Stayed with my wife for week on an Inghams super late deal. Good option to consider as well positioned in village and has a nice garden surrounding to sit out in. Breakfasts were fine and reasonable choice, whereas the dinners enjoyed in the main 4* Hochfilzer hotel itself were excellent. Service was first rate. Bus stops were located almost outside and opposite the hotel.
Had a really good deal by staying in the Claudia, but at normal tariff rates would be more likely to pay the extra 20% premium and stay in the main Hotel Hochfilzer building.
There is a good consideration by staying in the Pension Claudia in that surrounding lawns and trees made it look very pleasant, but for us there were two disadvantages. Firstly, although our room was large, well furnished and comfortable it suffered a damp problem throughout our stay. Room was positioned at back of hotel,at ground level and despite very warm weather during our week, both bedding and our clothing constantly absorbed quite a high level of moisture. Thought initially, it was because room had been unused, but by end of our week still no improvement. Chose room on basis that it also had a bath and was larger to accommodate 3 people, but suggest the higher level rooms with a balcony probably do not suffer same problem - and extra surcharge is only nominal. The other minor point is that the Pension in being just an easy 5 minutes walk from main hotel, is not a difficulty whilst weather good, but then when rains. Became lulled by a week of sun into not taking coat nor umbrella when going for dinner, but then on our last evening the skies very surprisingly opened up and heavy rain stopped our being able to return to the Claudia for quite awhile. Only once a problem for us, but could be more so in another week.
Ellmau is a good choice to stay, and the now free bus trips between Going and Soll, and up to Hintersteinersee are a bonus.

Room Tip: Avoid having a room at ground level. At the front, with a balcony is the best option.

We had the most enjoyable stay at "Claudia", simple, clean, well located pension, rooms are spacious and cheerfully decorated. As we went during high season it was fully booked everywhere, but " Claudia" turned out to be a good choice. Recommended to anyone.
