Have just returned from a week, staying at the The Schonblick. This was the first time in Austrua for 30 yrs and I travelled with family and friends. The hotel itself itself is what ii would interpret as quite traditIonal. It was spotlessly clean and felt very homely and welcoming from the start of our holiday. The bedrooms were all different and although I think we had prob one of the smallest, it was quite adequate for 2 adults. Again it was spotlesly clean with lovely comfortable beds, plenty of storage and sockets. Bathroom was again clean and modern which was maintained everyday to the same standard. Plenty of hot water for baths. The meals were quite basic I would say to some people's taste but the food was traditional and homely and very enjoyable after a hard days skiing, but 4 courses in the evening and continental with plenty of fruit, cereals etc for breakfast Ericka and Maria worked very hard to meet all of our needs and the standard of service with drinks and food was tops. She was very helpful and gave us plenty of info. there is really nothing negative to say about the schonblick other than the location. It's at the top of a long and steep hill. Beautiful views of the valleys and mountains. if you don't mind a long walk its ok but the ski buses that run are reliable and prompt and get you to where u need to be on time. Alternatively there's taxis which cost approx 5 euros one way down into Ellmau village which takes only 5 mins. Again Ericka was always happy to ring for taxis for us. Location wise for skiing its a lovely place with so many different runs and locations with beautiful scenery. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask Ericka when you arrive. Rooms facing the valley have beautiful views

Wonderful week at the Schonblick, again. Maria and Erica recognised us from last year and made us all very welcome, well worth making an effort and getting to Know them and enjoying their sense of humour, making a great atmosphere for the rest of our stay. Considering all rooms where fully booked and a regular passing trade of locals every evening, this was never a problem for Erica or staff (how hard they work)
The Schonblick is a typical small Austrian hotel, in a superb location, ski out ski in not a problem. There is a regular ski bus (this year it was far more reliable) that takes you down into Ellmau, three minute journey .
The bedrooms are warm comfortable and clean, not all rooms have a balcony.
The food is tasty wholesome and filling, as you would expect typically Austrian (yes we had the peaches) There was a small bar but the majority of drinks where brought to the table.
This is a lovely scenic area very traditional and mostly unspoilt. Overall we had little to complian about, if you do ski down into village for apre-ski, after five you will have to pay for a taxi back up to the Schonblick, for a three star hotel it was all that we expected and more.

Location was fine with nice views, the room was spacious, comfortable and clean, beds were a little hard but that was expected. Some of the staff were pleasant, but the place lacked atmosphere The food was not very good. It was generally poorly cooked and of low quality. We even had tinned peaches served up. Not that I have anything against them of course. In fact they tasted better than most of the home cooked food. Will not be going back.

Week's holiday just passed and how i'd love to be back there. What a great little hotel up the hill (ok, a steep one) from Ellmau Village. Greatly appreciated the friendly and warm welcome from Maria, Erica and the other staff. Very traditional and exceptionally clean. Really good wholesome food awaits after a long days skiing, which was simply amazing. Ski in and Ski out from just accross the road or if enough snow to the door. Would reccomend to people who prefer to be treated as a person and not just a room number. Great place, great skiing.... Nothing left to say.

Booked this hotel as part of a package holiday with Crystal Holidays. Did not realise we had to climb a very steephill everyday to get to the hotel. Erika was very helpful and friendly. Even though I loved Ellmau I would not return to this hotel. It was clean but I found the atmosphere very unfriendly.

We booked a last minute Christmas ski deal that had us staying at this location in Ellmau, Austria. This is more of a pension house than a hotel but as the listing is for a hotel I'll keep with it.

There's no reception or lounge so to speak. It does however have a restaurant, open to guests and non-guest alike and the coffee & cake options are pretty good. Prices range from $ - $$. There's a good choice of beers and spirits, but no vodka for some reason. The house wines are also pretty good at 16-18 Euros for a liter. There's a wine list for the more adventurous.

Transport Advice:
You should be aware that the hotel is located up the valley side out of town. It's a steep hill and takes 10 minutes to walk down or 15 minutes to climb up. The ski bus occasionally heads this way but from experience the timetable is limited, runs 9 - 11 am and 3 - 5pm with a mini bus every 45 minutes or so. In other words its limited. Taxi drivers will drive you up the hill for 7 Euros for a car and 14 Euros for a min bus. If you drive in the winter you will need either winter tyres, chains or in some circumstances both to reach the hotel car park. There are very limited options for parking at the bottom of the hill on very wintery days. Take it easy and remember that some locals will be using snow tyres with studs. Dive at their pace at your own risk. I wouldn't, especially on the down hill sections with the sharp curves.

Room Advice:
The hotel is orientated north south. North looks out over the valley floor towards the majestic mountain range. The south looks up towards the Hartkaiser mountain. The views to the north are better. The rooms are pretty much identical. Rooms 2 and 3 are located on the ground floor looking north but are located below the main kitchen and outside the rooms is the ski boot drying and storage area. These two rooms are best avoided if you like to sleep late!

The beds are huge Austrian twins and are very comfortable. The rooms are large with good storage and access to a balcony. There are very small TV's in the rooms (14" portables) but they have German, Austrian and Dutch cable channels. There's no English based programming such as BBC world wide, Sky or CNN etc. There is an English speaking radio station, on 100.0 FM if you take a portable radio.

The hotel is a quiet place to be with very little noise after dark. The snow plough will wake you where ever you are in the resort. Its a little evil, yellow coloured, digger with a metal bucket and it starts it's run at about 3 am.

Restaurant Advice:
The restaurant has the capacity to turn out some great dishes. Our trip was however half-board and the tour operator must have allowed 5 Euros/head and that only permitted the basics. It was however good, wholesome food that grandma makes. Breakfast options were limited to cereals, rolls, ham and cheese. It was too much trouble to ask for eggs and I gave up after asking just once. It was however the best soft boiled egg I'd ever had.

I'd say that in comparison to other half-board options that we've had in the area this one was below par but I point the finger in the direction of the penny pinching tour operators.

Skiing and Boarding from the hotel Advice:
Technically you can ski in and out of this hotel but be prepared to push your way though a car park to the slope. On not so snowy days its a short 3 minute walk to access a slope that will take you to the base. Intermediate skiers and confident beginners can ski down. Learners should take a bus or ski school transport. If you intend to ski back to the hotel you will need to catch the chair lift before 4:30 pm or it's a bus ride into town and a hit or miss mini bus ride up the hill back to the hotel. Don't miss the lift!

Ski Area Advice:
Lots has already been written about Ski Welt and you can find links here:

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g190434-d310840-Reviews-Skiwelt-Austrian_Alps.html

However in brief it's a good area for beginners, and intermediates. Experts looking for hard charging steeps, deeps, trees and bumps should look elsewhere. That's not to say that Ski Welt lacks but you'll need to know where to look to find all of the above. The pass covers a large area which will challenge even the best of skiers to do a full lap before darkness.

If you are snowboarding its not too bad but be warned there are some long flats into the valleys that will test both your skill and walking abilities. The runs into Itter, Brixen and Westendorf fit this criteria. The run into Soll however is recommended.

Room Tip: They are all pretty much the same but if you get one looking into the valley you'll be rewarded...
