“Hotel has potential - but very basic and worst food ever had”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Stayed for cheap week skiing with 18 month baby . Would NEVER stay in hotel like this again ! Despite initially thinking hotel was nicer than expected and pool facilities etc very nice !

Room - great - in new annexe - big, clean , good storage , bath and balcony . BUT no toiletries whatsoever, not even soap in toilet , no fridge and basic tv .
Old washed out towels , and NO bed linen or covers for baby - despite asking for 3 days in a row for this !!! Luckily had brought some back up !

Reception usually unmanned ! Herbert - owner - makes EVERY decision in hotel and no member of staff can do anything without his approval - so if he not around - you are stuffed !!!

EVERYTHINg has to be be payed for in cash up front ... Including use of pool towels, drinks etc - take lots of cash !!!!
This was very inconvenient and not hotel atmosphere used to !

FOOD- can only be described as slop ! Worst ever experienced ! Didn't eat an evening meal all week ! Mass produced , school dinner like . Vegetarian option cauliflower variant most nights wirh the exception of salad with bfreakfast left overs one nigjt ! ( cheese and egg salad !!! ) Breakfast basic but totally fine - bread cheese cereal etc

Location is fab - directly across from tbar which can get you started for day and can ski down to bubble .

So much potential to be a great hotel but needs major investment , a decent chef and some basics added to make it feel like a holiday venue !

I have stayed in harfenwirth hotellast week and just came back last night.

When I was reading the reviews about this hotel I was little worried about it.

Specially about the owner o the hotel. I was waiting someone miserable and nasty.

When I arrive at the hotel I realise that I should not be worried because everything was so perfect.

Let's start from the beginning.

In very first day My flight was late so I was late to the hotel. I ask if I am late for a dinner and staff was so helpful they have serve us full menu.

And the owner of the hotel came to the table he asked if everything was ok ? This happened about 2-3 times in one week. He sit on the table for a short time and ask if we were happy.

Then we went to the rooms. The room we stayed in was a good size and very clean.

The hotel it self is also clean.
Food was good.

All Staff was extremely helpful. Specially Chelsea. She was so polite and helpful.

The hotel has got swimming pool, sauna, jakuzi, steam room. What else can I ask ask ?

People who complain about the hotel and owner of the hotel should think that they are in different country and must understand of the culture.

I specially ask about the pictures on the walls. They said it's traditional people leaving in niedareu. They specially put family pictures on the wall. Which is understandable.

Generally I would defiantly go back to this hotel. From A to Z everything was great. Thank you people.

Suggestion ; you need sign to put around swimming pool area. " please don't dive " " please swim from left to the right etc.

Stayed at this hotel for 7 days over christmas last year and had a most enjoyable time. This is the 2nd time I have stopped here and Herbert (owner) remembered us even though it was 5 years ago. Very friendly staff. Was made to feel at home. Would highly recommend this hotel for anyone stopping in niederau. I went with my wife and 2 children and was very well looked after. The food is of the highest quality and well prepared. I am now saving up as I plan to go back this year.

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights last week.
It is described in the Crystal Ski brochure as a four star hotel.... At best I would describe it as a two star hotel.
Firstly some of the good points.
The room, whilst pretty basic and in need of refurbishment, was warm and the bed was fairly comfortable. The location of the hotel is good in relation to distance from the slopes and main gondola. The ski and boot rooms are good. The ski bus stops outside the hotel and serves the other resorts in the valley.
I'm afraid that is it for the positives.

The hotel in general is in need of total refurbishment. The decor is plain and uninspiring. The carpets are well worn. We were told by a local businessman that the condition of the hotel reflects the mood of Niederau which as a resort is in decline. There is no investment being made in Niederau. The main reason is that visitors are heading down the valley to Auffach which is now linked by a new gondola to Alpbach. These two resorts offer superior accommodation and ski conditions.
The owner, Herbert , who apparently owns half of Niederau, is a dead ringer for Victor Meldrew. He strolls around the hotel barking out his orders to both hotel guests and staff. He makes small talk with guests but it comes across as lacking in sincerity.
We returned from skiing early one afternoon. Our plan was to make use of the sauna and steam room. We were disappointed to find that these were both turned off. It took us over half an hour to find a member of staff to see if they could help us. The response was maybe the chef could help but unfortunately he was not in the hotel.

Now for the worst aspect of staying at this hotel, THE FOOD.
Quite simply it was the worst hotel food I have ever been served. I say served because I couldn't eat it. Even school dinners were better.
Firstly breakfast, this consisted of a basket of bread rolls and dried bread, slices of uninspiring cold meat and cheese, luke warm over cooked scrambled eggs , a few boiled eggs, a variety of boring cereals and a large bowl of fruit salad that looked like it had been prepared the night before.
Hot drinks provided via a machine.
This was the breakfast every day, no variation.

For dinner, there was a choice of two mains plus a vegetarian option. Boring and monotonous salad was also available. It would appear that leftovers from the previous evening were made in to over salted and tasteless soup, served prior to the main course.
The mains were dreadful, tasteless and at best served only Luke warm. If you were lucky and down early for dinner, you were able to grab some of the leftover pieces of bread from breakfast that were by now very dry. Butter for the bread was only available if you were willing to pay for it, yes pay for it 80 cents for a small pack!!!!!!

You were given just the one option for a desert. These ranged from a small pot of cold custard to tasteless pieces of cake.
No tea or coffee was offered, sorry wrong, it was available but you had to pay for it.
Cheese and biscuits afterwards, don't be silly, nothing as lavish as that.

While we were there, several guests complained of being poorly having contracted stomach bugs.

We will never return to this hotel.

We booked through a well known ski company and to be fair on the team at Harfenwirt, Thomsons brochure should be more honest, especially with things they don't tell you.
Given what we paid and after flights and transfers etc I reckon that the cost of the hotel was a max of £30pp per night. The room we stayed in isn't a 3 star but half board for £30 is good value for money so please read my review with this in mind.
THE GOOD STUFF
We have nothing but praise for all the staff. They are friendly and eager to help when you ask despite being rushed off their feet. A special mention goes to the Spanish waiter who did all he could to ensure my wife had something to eat for each course despite her lactose intolerance - thank you. Herbert is doing what most hotel managers fail to do, he talks with all his guests. As regards table arrangements he does a good job in matching customers up to the right table and will accommodate requests but try to give him some advance warning. The halfboard evening meals are faib varied and delivered to tables in quick time for what we paid. Breakfast is self serve and typical of Austrian halfboard , there was plenty to start the day for most tastes and some guests took advantage of the bread rolls, cheese and cold meats for their packed lunch. Drinks are served to the table from the bar on request.
For skiers there is a fantastic ski locker room where you can also hang your boots on a special made boot radiator so they are dry and warm for the next day.
THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF
We stayed in the annexe. It should be rated 1or 2 star. The accommodation is in desperate need of an overhaul. Old carpets, old furniture and dark wooden walls make it quite depressing. Upgrade to the hotel if you can. The brochure says its 150m from the hotel - buy a new tape measure. Its certainly a drag having to stomp up and down to and from the hotel. Luckily for us Herbert was on hand when we arrived and kindly drove us, our bags and ski gear up to the annexed in his van. Not so lucky on the last day having to drag it all the way back to the hotel for our transfer home. Once you get past the drab furniture and the daily breakfast and dinner excursions its bearable but what we object to is having no kettle to boil water for tea or coffee....especially as the only option left was to march up and down to the hotel only to find nobody available to make you a cup. (Take a travel kettle). The constant walking to and fro to use the hotel facilities makes the sauna and pool pretty redundant if you stay in the annexe.
WIFI, €1 for 15 minutes. Its free in O'Malleys and Schnapshutte bar in Niederau and most restaurants at Aufach.
SUGGESTIONS
Tea and coffee making facilities in all rooms especially the annexe - for such a small outlay customer experience is greatly enhanced. (Essential as you don't have it available 24/7 in the hotel.)
Reserve the annexe for self catering only and repair the old ovens and fridges.
You are loosing a lot of customers to the free WIFI places elsewhere in the town - set it up free in the bar and people will buy more drinks.
Employ a younger\more active bar manager to make more out of a captive customer base.
OVERALL
Good value for the price - don't go expecting a modern 2/3 star.
Herbert, Walter and Maria are charming hosts in their own way.
Need to modernise some of their practices before they loose too many loyal customers to better and equally priced newer hotels.

Room Tip: Avoid the annexe and take a travel kettle.

Thanks for taking the time to submit such an informative and helpful review.

We have read it thoroughly - we work very closely with Tripadvisor and encourage people to voice their opinions.

Herbert has assured us that within the next few days there will be kettles provided in the Annexes.

We are working on your other suggestions.
Have a great year.

We booked fairly late through Inghams and went in the first week in January and felt we got an excellent deal for what we paid for. The location is fantastic for both skiers and non-skiers and everything else was very serviceable. Our rooms were in the old part of the hotel well sized and clean if a little tired in places. We thought the food was fine, we always managed to get an egg for breakfast even if they had run out earlier. I enjoyed the salad buffet and found there was a variation each day. For dinner there was always delicious home made soup to start with. The main courses were a bit hit and miss depending on what you chose but I didn't have anything that was uneatable. It's situation across the road from the skiing is excellent and there is a ski bus stop right outside. The only things that annoyed me were the guests that insisted on smoking directly at the hotel door (not even moving when we tried to get in with baggage) and diners who helped themselves from the selection of deserts with one of each selection, ate part of one then left the rest meaning that those that dined later didn't get any dessert!
We had a couple of lunches at the hotel and they were snacks mainly but what was needed and at very reasonable cost. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times.

Having just returned from a week in Niederau staying at the Harfenwirt Hotel. This was one of the best holidays we have had and one which could not be faulted.

Were does one begin, Herbert is a congenial host and nothing it too much trouble for him. A very likeable person. Herbert and his daughter, Emily played their harps on Christmas Eve for everyone in the hotel - although at times it was very difficult to hear them as some of the guest insisted in talking whilst they were playing - which just shows bad manners on the part of some of the guests.

The bedroom was very clean as was the bed linen. The towels were changed on a daily basis if left on the bathroom floor.

The dining room and buffet bar are situated in the new dining room. The food was faultless and there was plenty of it. Although when you stay anywhere in Austria you do not expect the typical Christmas dinner. The Gala dinner was plentiful which included an excellent fish starter, followed by the salad buffet, choice of main courses and help yourself dessert. Although some guests took the help yourself to the fresh oranges and biscuits literally. Not only did you have the staff waiting at the table but there were waiters taking your drinks orders at the table - taking into account the amount of guests staying at the hotel they dealt with this with speed and efficiency and reduced the amount of time waiting in the bar queue.

After everyone had left the dining room the waiting staff were still there setting the tables for breakfast.

The bar staff worked extremely hard from early evening until the final guest left the bar, never once did they falter in their serving of drinks be it alcoholic, soft drinks or tea and coffees.

Herbert was in the hotel from 06:00 a.m. before the first guests arrived for breakfast and still there when many of the guests had retired for the night - glad there are not the normal working hours for most people.

Emily - enjoyed you playing the harp and hope you will honour us again with another performance in the future. Remarkable considering she is only 15 years old!

After reading some of the recent reviews did we all stay in the same hotel!!! Would definitely go back again.

Herbert - keep up the good work, enjoyed Christmas and the Harfenwirt and we are definitely staying with you again for another Christmas and will bring the whole family in the summer.
