“value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2014

We stayed at pension enzian in Jan 14 and chose it for its price as we are two students with not the most money in the world. Was very impressed with everything, rooms were clean, service was fantastic , food was very tasty and exactly what you needed after a day on the slopes, and the drinks were very reasonably priced. Got in late on Saturday night and was given a 3 course meal and a very friendly welcome from the owner which is exactly what we needed after a nightmare journey.

Only reason for not being 5 stars is that it is quite a basic hotel but you definitely don't need any more. Also be prepared to catch a bus for the better slopes, but the bus is free and lift pass covers the area. Resort is also quite quiet so not for party animals.

Thank you Tom and Tina, absolutely brilliant holiday!

Stayed with wife and 4 yr old 4th-11th Jan 14- fantastic holiday well looked after by Tom and Tina. Despite generally poor snow conditions the nursery slope opposite the hotel was kept in excellent condition and we had it to ourselves most of the time. Thoroughly recommend this hotel - Tom -Anna says "keep the change!"

We booked our stay here after reading many positive reviews. After booking, we saw the two (obviously the same party) fairly recent negative reviews and worried. WE NEEDN'T HAVE. From the very beginning of our stay we found the enzian a lovely place to stay.

You have to accept that you get what you pay for, facilities are not going to be five star standard in a two star hotel, however, standards were far better than we were expecting. Tom and Tina were both extremely pleasant throughout our stay and helped us where possible. Our rooms were extremely clean and although facilities are basic they are also very comfortable.

We found the food throughout the week to be very good (again, particularly with respect to what you pay). Meals were varied and very tasty, very helpful when catering for our children and we had no issues with any drinks! What restaurant/hotel ever let's you take your own drinks??? Dinner is always at 6.30 which we thought might be difficult (we were late twice due to après activities but this was never a problem for them) but it actually made for a lovely little atmosphere with everyone chatting and eating at the same time. We met a lovely couple who were fantastic with our children!

They had a very useful room downstairs where you leave skis and boots and any other clothing that needs drying out. It is situated a little distance away from the main lift but with a lovely short blue run and button lift straight opposite the hotel you can ski across to the main gondola.

Would I recommend the Enzian? Without doubt, yes. It proved much better than we were expecting and a real positive highlight of our week. If we were ever to return to Niederau, I would stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed on the top floor and had no problems.

We have just returned after spending Christmas at the Pension Enzian with our young family (daughter 3, son 7). The hosts Thomas and Tina were absolutely lovely. They were always approachable and very friendly. They also speak very good English. We didn't have a very expensive budget for our first family ski holiday and were a little apprehensive about staying in a 'cheaper' hotel, but we needn't have worried. The rooms were very clean with exceptionally comfy beds. For our meals we had a private booth of our own, and Thomas and Tina gave the little ones their own placemats and child sized cutlery. We made friends with the couple sitting in the booth next to us, and due to the small size of the dining room - it had a lovely friendly atmosphere. Due to the mis - timing of some of our Crystal activities we were late for some of our 6:30 meal times, but the hosts were very accommodating and didn't mind a bit. The ski slope directly outside the hotel has one of the best kept blue runs, and it was lovely just to stagger across the road with all our gear on ready to ski. Sometimes we used the slope to sledge on with the kids too. There is also a ski and boot room in the cellar. The hotel is within 5 mins walking distance of 2 little supermarkets, which was really handy when the kids fancied a snack. I would thoroughly recommend a stay at this hotel.

Well, what can I say? My sister spent long hours scouring trip advisor for a really nice place to take me for a week to thank me for redesigning her garden. In retrospect, she’d have been better choosing a place with a pin!

But let me give you the low down on the the good, the bad and the rest of it….

First, the good points: the rooms, though basic, are kept very clean. The drying room is ample and works.

Second, the acceptable points: you need to be aware that what you are booking is a very cheap hotel/hostel. Facilities are commensurate with this: TV costs an extra 4 euros a day; computer use is 1 euro per 15 mins and accessed standing in the main hallway ; tap water is charged for (we were ticked off for bringing a plastic refillable bottle of water to our table even though we’d bought ample wine and beer). The proprietor, Tom charges for any drinking off tap water in the dining area even though most other hotels in the area supply a glass of tap water free with wine or coffee purchase as a matter of course. This comes as a bit of a shock to a Londoner where one is encouraged to carry a refillable water pretty much everywhere and where access to tap water is seen as a basic human right!

Third, the bad points. There is no communal sitting or relaxing area open during the day. Even though smoking seems to be banned at the Pension, the place often smells quite strongly of smoke as the staff and their friends do smoke inside. Finally, the food is very mundane. Think school dinners but definitely not of the Jamie Oliver variety. Although the meat is good quality, it is often covered with a tinned or bottle sauce, most of the veg are frozen, mashed potato is the powdered kind, sweets are often the “Angel Delight” variety. This gave me a major problem as am badly intolerant to MSG and other additives, so there was a lot I could not eat. Tina, was helpful in this respect, and cut me up a grapefruit which I had bought myself and which I ate instead of the soups.

Fourth, The completely unacceptable points: We were just going out for a day trip out when the proprietor started yelling at us that we’d complained to the holiday Rep that the food was not fresh. When we answered that we’d actually seen the packets of powdered food he went ballistic..(Think a combination of John Cleese and Jack Nicholson in The Shining). He followed us down the corridor and outside the Pension, shouting at us. We were shaken, quite scared, and very upset. We had never experienced any hotelier acting like this.

The following day we found a lovely hotel down the valley. With great food, lovely staff and fantastic facilities. We spent the rest of our week there!!

Room Tip: Room 4 has noise from the extract duct/heater unit

Not recommended
I booked a week break at Pension Enzian for myself and my sister after reading the positive trip advisor reviews particularly recommending the quality of the food
When we arrived were met by the owner T, who I experienced as forbidding and not very friendly.
The first dinner I was shocked at the quality of the food, packet soup, good meat but smothered with jar/tin sauce and a small yoghurt all loaded with MSG: I mentioned this to the rep and indeed the quality of the food did improve somewhat over the next few days but still a tendency to MSG and angel delight type deserts. No fresh veg’s or fruit available but good salad.
Breakfasts were adequate and plentiful but no eggs/ bacon as in the reviews.
On the first night we were told off by Tom for mistakenly bring our water bottle to the table, despite buying several drinks. We did not purchase drinks after that as in other establishments we visited they will give tap water with drinks but not here.
When I asked for directions by bus to the nearby town the response was unhelpful and he treated it as a joke; so I did not ask for further information.
There is no general sitting and relaxing area in the day and despite asking guests not to smoke, our room sometimes smelt of smoke.
The bedroom was sufficient size and comfortable and kept clean; there was a constant drone of air con / extract fan all day and some of the night, I think from the unit on the outer wall outside our room.
The pension was kept clean and had an effective drying room.
The Pension is situated on a busy and fast main road.
Mid- way through our stay Tom and Tina stopped us as we were due to get the bus into town, and Tom told us off for questioning the closure of the nearest swimming pool ; he then challenged us for ‘ complaining’ to our rep that the food was not fresh, insisting that it was ; when we queried this having seen the box of powdered potato for example, Tom pursued us down the corridor and out of the door raising his voice saying that we should go to our room ; pack up our bags and go to a 5 star hotel . We quickly went to get the bus.
We did not want to stay and complete our holiday at the Pension Enzian as we felt threatened and unsafe as Tom is a large man and angry when challenged .
We fortunately found a lovely hotel in at the other end of the valley and really enjoyed the rest of the holiday.
Pension Enzian should be described as upmarket hostel type accommodation and is probably adequate for the skiing season for young people out all day. But personally I would not recommend the Pension Enzian, a most unpleasant experience.

Room Tip: room 4 is next to an extractor fan , can be noisy.
