“Great for Walking”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

Booked this hotel through Inghams, Very quiet resort during summer months but straight onto well posted walks.
Hotel was great! Good food, comfortable room, great pool and spa facilities.
All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke very good English. Our waiter Arnold was excellent!

Room Tip: All rooms have great views even if no balcony

Food - highest quality. High quality restaurant standard with a good choice of meals
Staff - exceptional. Attentive, professional whilst at the same time being very friendly.
Room - good size with very comfortable bed and seats. Bathroom is bijou and might benefit from being a shower room but some people do like a bath.
Location - central and opposite bus stop. Close to supermarket too.
We were on a walking holiday which offered the opportunity to visit for one night the Ramol Hus Hutte owned by the hotel. This is situated further up the valley at just over 3000m so does involve a steep climb at altitude. The hut is also of a high standard with flushing toilets, very good food and comfortable bunks. You just ask at the hotel reception to book a place at the hut instead of your night at the hotel but you still have your room at the hotel. It was well worth the visit and we were rewarded with about 10cm of snow overnight which added to our experience. The hotel also offers guided walks which we did not take although we used the information from one to create our own walk which was absolutely fab. It might have been worthwhile going on some of the guided walks.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: We chose a room with a balcony and it suited us well.

We have returned from an excellent holiday at the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl, Obergurgl. The hotel really deserve maximum points for the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff; the excellent varied menu, and central location in the village. The staff were excellent, from the receptionists when we arrived; the bedroom cleaners; dining room waiters, in fact everybody up to when we left Obergurgl on our final morning.

All hotels have their own characteristics in the Alps, but this 4* hotel must rank amongst the very best that we have stayed in, in both Switzerland and Austria.

The breakfast menu was very extensive and probably had the largest choice we have come across. Hot cooked breakfast, along with all hotels in the Alps, it seems, is quite limited compared with hotels in the U.K., but even with this respect, the hot food included fried and scrambled egg; assorted bacon and tasty sausages. Another item that must be mentioned is the variety of freshly baked bread and rolls on offer.

The evening meal was good in both quality and quantity. The five course meal included a well presented salad bar, and also a board of mature cheese to finish with. Water is supplied free of charge with your meal, and a small glass of wine for the two of us for 10 days came to only €44.

We visited the hotel as part of a packaged holiday. We paid a little extra for a larger room with balcony. Our only problem we experienced was the small bathroom measuring no more than 6ft square. A larger, better bathroom would have improved our holiday. A conversion to a modern shower room would have cost relatively little and would considerably improve the en suite. The bedroom was kept immaculately.

The spa facilities were very good with the indoor and outdoor pools both heated to 30c. The indoor pool was rounded in shape and I think, because of this, it soon seemed fairly full when there were only a few people using it.

One of the finest features of the hotel was the central, level location. From the entrance of the hotel the bus station was within a few metres across the road. On the other side of the hotel was the village gondola to take you on your first high altitude hikes. Obergurgl was a little larger than I expected making the village quite interesting, and there were plenty of walking options available from the hotel. The very best feature of the valley was the excellent connecting bus service to various villages, gondolas etc., even travelling over the mountain into Italy direct from Obergurgl bus station-all included in the local transport pass available locally.

Austria always gives great value for skiing. The standard of this hotel is as it should be. Nice rooms with comfortable beds. Good food and service. Great facilities.
The best bit is the position as no carrying of ski's necessary even for beginners. Ski school is just outside as are 2 ski lifts so whatever your standard you can get to and from this hotel easily.

Would have been 5 stars/Excellent rating…but…

Just returned from a weeks skiing and had a great time, 6 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 toddlers! We stayed here last year a week earlier and had an exceptional time.

The food and drink is exceptional as are the rooms and facilities the only thing stopping me giving this place a 5 star/excellent rating this year is the staff in the restaurant. Last year we found all the staff especially our waitress exceptional, she looked after us all week. This year our waitress was pleasant but seemed to be intermittent when she was on duty, we then had other waiting staff that ranged from pleasant to bizarre and seemed to struggle to get our doers right.

The hotel is placed at the base of two ski lifts so you can ski back down to the door of the hotel. There is a fully equipped ski shop in the basement. There is a bar outside the door for when you have finished skiing. The hotel food is amazing..especially the buffet on Friday evening. On Thursday evening they have a band playing. The spa is incredible with an indoor and outdoor pool. This is a family run hotel. The one and only downside is the smoking in the bar. Apart from that I have been to this hotel 4 times now and would certainly return again.

For location, food and quality of facilities you would be hard pressed to find a better hotel in Obergurgl. My one comment would be the restaurant gets way too warm during the evenings so eat and adjourn to the bar. Perhaps that was their plan all along.
