Plus points are that this hotel is right next to ski shop, lifts and has ski in opportunity. Also the spa facilities are superb and shared with the next door sister hotel that has upstaged its senior partner. Rooms are comfortable, if dated, and restaurant menus are limited - only soup starter (every night).

Oddly the reception is unmanned during the week - telephone across the road for advice/help which is a bit odd given the number of people staying here. Our room was above the bar which meant noisy bass thumps till on one occasion 6.00am when investigation found that the barman had gone off duty and forgotten to turn the tape off - was the night porter asleep in the sister hotel?- a bit worrying if you are a safetyholic!.
Room TV is from the dark ages - no cable stations large box set, I had similar in Austrian hotels 15 years ago - again The Crystal has the modern kit.
Next time we would choose The Crystal across the road - the Sportiv could fast become the faded glory?

Room Tip: Avoid being above the bar

interesting to read reviews. we stayed here in april 2011 and were very disappointed - the food was not good and the room was basic. the redeeming feature was the access to facilties in the Crystal. We felt that the hotel was expensive and not value for money.

We got a great deal at the Crystal Sportiv. Friendly and hard working staff, great spa, simple yet well prepared food (nearly all the time) and all in all a good hotel.

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, 'First impressions last' Our meal the first night was bad. A choice of soggy fish fingers or meatballs. We understand that Saturdays are difficult with the changover, however a simple cold buffet with a soup would have been easy for staff to deal with and much more pleasant for guests.

One other point that managemt might note is the lack of security on the front desk. If you leave your room key at the desk anyone can access it.

This hotel has a lot going for it, location is excellent just next to the gondola, it has a fantastic boot room and has shared access to the Crystal Spa and pool. Rooms are a reasonable size and the bathrooms are basic but clean. The staff are friendly and helpful so where do they go wrong?

The hotel seems to be seen by the management as the poor relation of the Crystal Hotel and as a result it is understaffed and under-managed. The reception desk is rarely manned and, as room keys are on display, security is non-existent. Food is a particular problem; breakfast is served as a buffet but they constantly ran out of tea and coffee; the eggs (boiled and scrambled) are cooked. ahead of serving and have the consistency of rubber and the staff are clearly overworked. Dinner is even worse. On most nights food is pre-cooked and re-heated. On one night we were offered re-heated fish fingers (yes, fish fingers!) or reheated burgers in gravy! Once again food on the buffet would run out, if you want a starter or cheese course then get there early! All this is not because they are unable to cook a good meal (We had an excellent steak cooked to perfection on one night, the only decent meal during our stay) it seems that they think they can get away with serving institutional food as a way of saving money. I felt sorry for the staff who were without exception polite and helpful despite being clearly overworked and under-resourced.
In summary: this hotel has the potential to be an excellent mid-ranged option in Obergurgl but is let down by poor management and lack of attention.

The hotel was of a high standard. Good food from breakfast to the evening meal. A swimming pool and many other ammeneties. One of the best boot rooms I have used and only a few metres from the nearest gondola. The desk was often unmanned and I feel the staff could have sold the hotel and what it had to offer better.

Room Tip: All rooms were ok with good lift service.

We stayed in the Sportiv last January and returned this year. We had a large traditional room (we paid a supplement) which was well furnished and very comfortable. Typical Austrian style which probably needs updating but then the price will increase!! The food this year was well improved on last year. No complaints at all. Water provided on the tables, a reasonable wine list at fair prices and a generous cheese board. The location beside one of the main lifts is excellent and the spa, which is second to none, is easily accessible as is the luxurious ski and boot room. The staff get a special mention and were pleasant, helpful and friendly.

This was an excellent hotel. When we read some reviews before we went we were a little worried but we need not have been. The food was good with the bonus of an italian restaurant next door . If you ate there you got a substantial amount deducted from the bill as a resident of the hotel.
The dining room and bar staff could not do enough for you and there was a good festive atmosphere over Christmas.
The spa was the best we have ever experienced - a real place of relaxation with a child free zone if you wanted more peace and a textile sauna and steam room for those who did not want to bare all in the larger spa area.
We would certainly go again.
