“More than just value for money.”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

This hotel combines the best elements of the adjacent glitzier (and pricier) 4 Star Crystal Hotel with 3 Star affordability. Rooms are basic but comfortable, warm and clean. The staff are simply wonderful and work hard to ensure a smooth, effortless stay is enjoyed by all (we were welcomed with a glass of bubbly on arrival). The food is definitely better than the hotel's 3 stars would suggest, borrowing the same chef and menu as the Crystal, only without a few of the 4 star extras (3 courses vs 4, for example). Access to the excellent ski and boot storage area is via an electronic card, which also gains you access to the Crystal's superb spa area, linked to the Sportiv by an underground passageway. If you can leave the famous British reserve at home, then we would highly recommend the naked spa over the smaller and less interesting 'textile sauna'! There is a ski lift right outside the hotel which will take you up to the top of the Obergurgl area and a bus stop that can take you further afield to the larger Solden.

Complimentary afternoon tea is served at the Crystal every afternoon from 1500 which is a jolly refined way to unwind after an early start on the slopes (which are pretty good, by the way). It is also a great opportunity to compare the Crystal's sleek, elegant, minimalist interior with that of the cosier, warmer and downright more characterful Sportiv.

A warm and welcoming place to stay for a ski trip. Highly recommended!

Stayed at Crystal Sportiv 5th to 12th Jan. Snow conditions were excellent all week and Obergurgl was a great resort for beginners and intermediate skiers. I found the piste ratings a little confusing. Some reds were clearly blues and some blues were harder than the red runs. The black run I did at the top of the mountain in Hochgurgl was no more than a difficult red in other resorts. If you are an accomplished skier it's possible to do all runs in the resort within a couple of days. That said the runs were generally wide and provided enough of a challenge to really enjoy, especially as there is enough space not to feel too crowded and there aren't many snowboarders around.
The Sportiv hotel was functional and clean. The rooms were large enough to be comfortable but I would agree that they could do with a little updating. We were met by Stefan who welcomed us with a champagne reception, so things looked good from the start. The bar area was always warm and had a lovely atmosphere and old fashioned Austrian charm. We did go for a drink in the Crystal one night but felt it lacked caracter. You could have been at any good hotel in any city in the world. It was lovely but the last thing I want on a skiing holiday is to feel I have to dress up to go down to the bar or restaurant.
The food in the Sportiv was good, although the main course in the evening was always quite small. This was compensated by the other courses though and if you had the afternoon tea in the Crystal hotel then the evening meal in the Sportiv was more than enough.
The spa area was excellent, and real tonic at the end of a hard day skiing. My wife had a facial and upper body massage which she really enjoyed. The adult only section of the spa was very discreet and the adult relaxation room was a pleasure to hide away and read for a while. There was no need to be nude in this room, and even in the spa area the discreet use of towels was allowed to protect your modesty if you wished, although most people felt relaxed enough to do as the Austrians do.
The ski boot room was the best I have ever seen, leading out to the gondola next door. Disappointingly the ski in ski out credentials of the hotel should come with a warning. The best route is down the red run number 3, but it is quite a steep bendy red for good intermediates. My wife who is very capable of skiing most reds wasn't confident enough to do it so we ended up going the long route. The alternative route involves skiing to the far end of the village down Blue 6 and then ski poling for quite a way to the nursery slope, to take a button lift which brings you out near to the end of Red 3. Although it is only a short distance to ski down to the hotel on this red, it is quite steep and if you are a beginner or not particularly confident blue run skier, then this could prove quite a challenge.
Obergurgl village had bags of character, but apart from hotel bars, there wasn't a huge choice of restaurants or bars. But that is probably part of its charm.
Would I recommend Obergurgl.........yes
Would I recommend the Crystal Sportiv.....yes
Would I go back again......probably not. But for me it was a great place to enjoy once. There are too many other places that I want to see and which provide comparable if not better skiing and attractions.

The Sportiv is an older wing of the very good and very modern Crystal hotel. The Sportiv has access to the same first class spa facilities (and they really are very good - about five different saunas and steam rooms, and a great Finnish sauna and ability to run naked outside in the snow to cool off) and also gives access to the very good afternoon tea and cakes (really a very good mix of drinks and 'nibbles' that changes daily).
The Sportiv feels slightly out dated and downbeat by comparison with the Crystal, but the feeling is largely due to the very swanky feel of the Crystal itself. In reality the ski in/out, effectively 'on site' gondola, great spa, and general facilities of the hotel really are very good.
The hotel is one of the first you come across as you drive into Obergurgl, so there is a good 10 minute walk into the centre of town, but it's a nice walk, and you see most of the character of this pleasant ski town on the way through.
The barrel bar and curling rink were great attractions, and great fun, for us, and the Sportiv a good value, reasonable quality hotel with great facilities in a good location in a great ski town.
The skiing in Obergurgl is good and varied, and there are good fun tree lined runs for poor weather and visibility. Mountain huts were great, and the atmosphere of the tow good fun, especially at New Year.
We would happily go back to Obergurgl, and if we did I'd be very happy to stay at either the Crystal or the Sportiv.

This excellent value hotel is well located next to the gondola lifts with access to an extensive modern spa facility. The included half board meals might not be too imaginative but no complaints there. We skipped a few dinners and explored the restaurants located in the village centre. Please note that the reception staff tends to be based at the posher sister hotel across the road. Overall, great base for a ski holiday.

Just returned from a great week at the Crystal Sportiv.
This is a 3 star hotel (unlike most hotels in Obergurl which are 4+) so of course it is not as luxurious as some but what you get is great value for money and a fantastic location for ski in/ski out.
All the staff without exception were very friendly and helpful - we were even served a welcome glass of bubbly on checking in which is a first for a ski holiday.
We had a single and a double room - both clean, comfortable with plenty of storage room and small but well equiped bathrooms. Toweling robes and slippers provided. TV with multitude of channels including BBC1. All the rooms appear to be individually sized in keeping with the old nature of the building. We were on the 5th (top)floor which was very quiet and had easy lift access.
The food was generally simple but good - for dinner 3 choices of main course along with a soup, salad buffet, dessert and if you wanted cheese board. The buffet on the first night was not quite as good as other nights but overall we felt the food was tasty and plentiful. Breakfasts were excellent and certainly we never had any issues with running out - fresh fruit salad very morning and wonderful freshly made croissants. Cold and hot buffet (eggs, bacon, cold meats, cheese and smoked salmon).
The ground floor has a large bar/lounge area with free wifi - decor typically Austrian - comfortable and cosy. Bar opens for service at 6pm and prices very reasonable.
Free afternoon snacks are served every day between 3-5pm across the road at the main Crystal hotel with soup, hot snacks and array of lovely cakes - if you want to save money on lunches then wait for this! All you have to pay for is the drinks.
The 2 hotels are linked by a corridor giving access to the shared ski lockers which are quite simply the best we have seen. Spacious, heated, with individual ski and boot racks for each room - to access the slopes you carry your skis up the steps and you are at the foot of the Festkogl gondala. Also opening out of the locker area is the ski hire shop - it just couldn't be more convenient!
The other great bonus about the Sportiv is that you get to use the pool and spa facilities of the Crystal hotel which are just wonderful and a great place to relax after a hard day on the slopes.
Overall this hotel offers great value, friendly atmosphere and excellent ski facilities which must be why so many of the guests we met were returning for their second or third visits.....
The week we stayed there there was a wide range of groups from singles to large family parties so suitable for all but I would think especially good value if you are taking children.

We have just enjoyed a super third holiday at the Crystal Sportiv, such great value for money and friendly staff. The food has improved, good choice breakfast and dinner. For me the Sportiv feels like home,I love it's old fashioned charm in contrast to the ultra smart modern Crystal. Please remember that this hotel is a 3 star so do not expect 5 star, but be appreciative of all the little extras. We had snow all day on Monday 19th March then beautiful blue sky sunny days for the rest of the week.So looking forward to returning next year .Thank you again to Klaus and his wonderful staff.

Reviewed 20 March 2012

Stayed at the Sportiv in March 2012 and was very nervous about what we were letting ourselves in for after reading reviews on here. However, I am pleased to say that I can balance the books on the good reviews as it was far better than expected. Hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. The bar area was lovely and comfortable with an open fire, some have commented that it is dated but to us it was just traditional. Only negative is that it doesn't open until 6pm so not able to crash with a beer after coming off the slopes. The food was good although not mitchellin star standard, but we ate very well and we also ate in the Italian next door which was excellent and they refund your half board meal allowance from your hotel bill for doing so. Afternoon tea is served over at the Crystal and they provide the most amazing cakes and snacks and you only have to pay for drinks.
Some have commented on the rooms being basic but they are more than adequate, the beds are very comfortable, very clean and serviced every day. It was a bit warm on a night but slept with the window open and it was fine. The bathroom was a good size and the shower was great. Only negative is that there is no tea making facilities in the room, however we got around this and went and bought a travel kettle and a couple of mugs for 16 euros from the nearby supermarket. Free Wifi is provided (you have to pay in the Crystal) but couldn't get it in the room, but down in the lounge it was fine.
The use of the Spa facilities in the Crystal was an absolute bonus and they are fabulous, but make sure that if you intend to book in for a treatment you do it at the beginning of the holiday as they were fully booked when I tried to book in for a massage. Robes and slippers are provided. The boot room is definitely the best I have seen with allocated spaces for boots with warm air blowers directly above. Skis also have their own rack allocated to room number.
Hotel, location to the lift (gondala right next door) and quiet relaxed atmosphere have definitely put this one on our list of hotels to return to.

Room Tip: If you are a smoker then request a room with a balcony if possible as it saves having to go downstai...
