“ski in spring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We are couple from Romania who spend a week holiday in Hotel Bellevue in Obergurgl, Tirol, Austria in our Orthodox Easter (15th April)

Obergurgl is a wonderful mountain resort at 2000 mt. altitude in Tirol - Otztal, and is a pefect destination for ski lovers. The slopes begin just near hotel and exist unlimited possibilities for skiing from 3000 m direct in the village (2000 mt.).

The ifrastructure is excelent, having very good connection between two mountains consisting in two big ski areas.

Hotel Bellevue have an outstanding position in Obergurgl with a wonderful panorama view from restaurant, lobby and soth wing of the hotel. Anoher plus of this hotel are the pools (heated), one of them going from inside directly outside and you can see by this pool whole landscape.

Frau Steiner, the owner of the hotel, was an exelent host, very carefully with her guests and very eficient to solve the demands of the guests.

The staff was very professional, especially Mathias, and very helpful with us.

The room was realy big, having all you need.

The food was a harvest for our mouths and was really abundend.

So, I strongly recomend this hotel for those who loves snow and winter sports.

Till next time,

Radu and Cristina Cataniciu

A group of 4 couples (all inthe late 40s to early 50s) stayed here first week of April 12 for a civilised skiing holiday. We were on a half board package organised by Inghams. We were lucky with the snow , weather and skiing conditions and indeed for a fist time to Obergurgl found the ski resort just perfect - not too big or daunting and the ski restaurants etc were just very agreeable. Good food (wiener schnitzel etc) and all very reasonably priced. None of your ridiculous French Alps Euros 50 for a pizza etc.

The Hotel Bellevue was a haven. The rooms were very comfortable (although not overly big) and the bathrooms worked well with really good showers (all our group found the same in their own rooms). We had a great view to the front - but that seemed to be more luck than anything else. The hotel is well sited for skiing in that you could ski (start or finish) to within 50m of the hotel.

The food was truly excellent - from breakfasts to the 5 course dinners. Every meal had recommended wines etc which you didnt need to go for but when you did they complimented the meal to perfection. Sure this upped our bill but if we'd stayed with the house wines (good quality as well) they were quite reasonable priced. Quite often the highlight of the day were the cakes / gateaux etc that greeted you at 5pm after skiing.

The service was excellent. I get the impression from some people's reviews that it was surly / and almost arrogant. We did not find this at all. It was just very very efficient and yes maybe in a Germanic sort of way - but all everyone wanted to do was serve and ensure that you were enjoying yourself in their family run hotel. Whether it was a towelling robe in your bathroom to more ice in your drink - nothing was too much bother. You may have a got a curt " Yes - it will be done" but it was - what more could you ask for?

I'm struggling to find fault - it was too warm (open a window..) , the meals were too rich (yeah ..get a life and eat less !) , the staff were surly (no they are not ... they are just good at their jobs and get on with it very efficiently).

Perfection - we will be back next year!

We stayed at the Hotel Austria the second week of the Easter break. The arrived early afternoon and the rooms were ready. The hotel is in a great location close to the Ski slopes in winter and close to the walking paths etc in summer. The menu is varied and with 5 courses each day it is more than enough. The quality was good and service was excellent. The attention of the staff was about right and any request were attended too with a smile. The rooms we had were spacious and had seating areas and separate toilets and bathrooms. Rooms were cleaned daily. The outside swimming pool and SPA area were great, there is a separate area for adults only steam rooms and Jacuzzi was very nice and quiet, the relaxing waterbeds were wonderful after a days skiing! The free afternoon snacks( 15.30 to 17.30) varied from a Goulash soup to hot apple strudel and custard, eat as much as you like! The staff were all friendly and always greeted you with a smile and responded when you said Hi or hallo etc. Gerhardt, the barman come head wine waiter come concierge was always there and made sure you had what you wanted and kept the wine flowing. Kids meals were very British so it was easy to keep our 10 year old happy. It was Easter and the hotel was dressed up in the traditional Easter fayer and all the children received Easter gifts and the adults a bottle of wine. Breakfast is mainly a cold buffet with some hot items and you can order extra hot food if you want. The Hotel Austria id linked to the sister Hotel Bellevue by a underground walkway which also connects to the swimming pool and Spa. Decoration and furniture in the hotel is very Austrian and funky. The location is great for Skiing as the slopes are just outside the front door, the boot room is large and with heated boot racks and ski racks for each room it made getting ready in the morning and d-booted at night very easy. Generally the hotel is relaxed friendly place with good levels of service and fine food.

Just returned from a family holiday to Hotel Austria. On the plus side the food was generally of a high standard, a good (although crowded pool area) and the adult only no clothes spa area was excellent with great steam rooms and sauna.

However, there were a number of problems. The management were rude and surly and were not interested in listening to any suggestions or complaints. There were no bath robes in our room which were meant to be standard and when we requested them at reception were made to feel as though they were doing us a massive favour. The rooms were clean but the beds were not particularly comfortable. The wine list was pretty reasonable starting at about €28 for a bottle but we objected to the €5 they charged for a bottle of water. One night when the drinks manager Gerhard was not around we were given carafes of tap water, but on the other nights Gerhard refused to serve us tap water saying 'it didn't exist!' and would only sell us bottled water.

This hotel is the sister hotel to Bellevue. We stayed in the annex of the main Hotel Austria and could also use the swimming pool and spa at the hotel Bellevue. We were a mixed age group, grandparents, two children with their other halves plus two grandchildren. The rooms in the annex are all of good size, family room was two rooms plus bathroom (with towelling robes) and seperate looe. The rooms are spotless. The staff are very friendly and efficient especially Gerhard and Catrina. The food was amazing as well. Buffet breakfast, cereals, cold meat, cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt, tinned fruit, toast jams, fruit juice and boiled eggs, also egg cooked as you wish with bacon. Afternoon snacks changed each day, cakes, meat loaf, cold meats and salad all delicious. Then the evening meal generally 5 course but one night Sunday was seven course. We could not fault the food, the chefs deserve a very big THANK YOU. However, the management are not so friendly. When we asked about keeping our room for a later check-out there was no discussion the response was an immediate NO. This was only a small thing but I don't know if it was as we were English there just wasn't that friendly feeling even when we paid our bill they almost couldn't be bothered.

Room Tip: Rooms in Annex 401 Family room 402, 404 good double rooms but can be a bit noisy early morning when...

My wife and I have just come back from a weeks skiing in Obergurgl having stayed at this hotel for the week and thought it was important to write this review while things are still fresh in the memory! I should probably start by saying that we've been skiing for 20 years and have visited many resorts including Mayrhofen, Soll, Val d'Isere, Tignes, Banff, Lake Louise, 3 Valleys, Les Deux Alpes, Sestriere to name but a few. Having stayed 4 star in Soll and Mayrhofen and had good experiences of Austrian hotels, we were expecting the same at the Bellevue in Obergurgl. Now don't get me wrong the hotel is clean, quite plush, traditional Austrian in style and the facilities are excellent with the leisure club and pretty good food. However, we have a few reservations which I felt I had to share with you all. The first was the quality of our room, which was small and dated in the decor department and also had only a shower. Being a little disappointed with the room, we approached the hotel through our tour operator (Crystal) for an upgrade which I was willing to pay for up to a point. Crystal were told by the owner of the hotel that this was not possible because the hotel was full. However, we noticed 4 or 5 room keys on the key board that never moved during our weeks stay, leading us to the conclusion that the hotel was not completely full. Having spoken to other English guests during our stay it became clear that two other couples had requested room changes on the same day as us and had been allowed to change rooms at no extra cost. My wife and I are 35 and we were by far the youngest couple in the hotel, and we got the distinct impression our concerns were not taken seriously because of our age. Not once did the hotel owner come over and discuss our concerns. A simple "I'm sorry you're unhappy with your room, but the hotel is full this week so I can't do anything" would have done, but nothing. We also heard the owner discussing us with her friends at the bar as my wife speaks German, which we thought was a little off. Having discussed the owner with the Crystal and Inghams reps on the last day, comments were made by them that she was difficult to deal with sometimes, a little ignorant and definitely preferred German or Austrian customers to English ones. There were other little annoyances over the week as well which just took the edge off what should have been a great week. Although it didn't completely spoil our holiday, it did provide some unpleasant moments. In summary, Obergurgl is a high altitude resort but is very quiet at night with very few bars, is pretty limited in terms of the size of the ski area, but the quality of all of the hotels we visited was excellent. The Bellevue is on the face of it a 4 star hotel as listed, but beware which room you get! On the subject of the food at the Bellevue, it is generally excellent, but in truth there's too much of it! Breakfast is awesome with pretty much anything you want: cereal, toast, fruit, bread, cheese, ham, bacon, eggs, omelettes, yoghurt etc. Evening meals are 5 course extravaganzas if you like that sort of thing, but for us it just got too much by the end of the week. This hotel is also not ski to the door as some websites claim, although it is probably only a 50m walk to the nearest slope if you go up the hill from the hotel and between the buildings. Other points to note are that the sauna and steam room are costume free (ie you must be naked) , but the hotel does have an excellent ski room with heated ski boot storage.

Overall, the hotel is rather nice, although the food gets a little too much, some of the rooms are small and not 4 star standard and the owner can be a little rude and ignorant. We also found the beds incredibly hard. I would also suggest it's for the "elder statesman"

Room Tip: Try and avoid room 111 which is the room we had!!

Just back from a weeks skiing in Obergurgle, stayed at the sister hotel "The Austria" two years ago. This hotel is much better. It's a great location and has very good facilities. The food was excellent, breakfast had many choices and the evening meals cant be faulted. Always a good afternoon snack too.
The staff were excellent too and couldnt do enough for you and Frau Steiner (Simone) was great, totally on the ball and works like a trojan to keep her guests happy and staff on their toes but in a freindly way. I cant wait to go back.

Room Tip: Email in adavance and book a better room than the tour companies offer
