Chalet Adler
Reviewed 10 March 2014 via mobile

We spent a week here with a large group of family friends.
Had a great time. The chalet is clean and huge with loads of space for each family to spend time together as well as a central place to get together.
The food was lovely and the children particularly enjoyed their meals.
The staff were generally great and attentive. We lacked some information on arrival that would have made the ski rental saga a little less stressful than it was. However the staff really helped sort out ski mix ups on departure.
We'd definitely go back

We really enjoyed our stay at Chalet Adler. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. After a delayed flight and unexpected journey from an airport further away two members of staff stayed up until 11.30pm to greet us and then made us a three course meal which we were not expecting! We thought the food was lovely especially the desserts! Our room was spacious and the chalet had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, a really great week! (Apart from breaking my shoulder!) lol

Stayed here and was well looked after. The chalet was clean the food excellent and the staff couldn't have made our stay more pleasant if they had tried. The kids had a great time in the clubs too. One pudding was so delicious it was eaten with alarming speed by the whole group.

Hi Simon, thanks for the kind comments on our staff which we will pass on. So pleased that the whole family had a good time and particularly appreciated one of our desserts!

Organused ny esprit ski. Kids had a great time. Meals were hit and miss. 2 of 3 meals in the evening had at least one course that was inedible. Eg pink pork that was sent back by every guest for further cooking. Apple crumble that was dust dry throughout and also rejected. The staff tried hard but seemed to be following a set of recipes with no skill or experience. Not what you expect given the cost of the package v

We stayed with Esprit Ski at the Adler in March. It was really good. Great rooms although we only had a shower. Lovely staff in the chalet and the food was great. A big step up from staying at the Pepi Gabl the year before which is old and cramped. One negative of Esprit Ski is the selling of the evening out with the show plough up to the mountain restaurant. Food really poor and really, REALLY EXPENSIVE!! Kids (aged 5 and 6) charged €27 each and no ice cream just a bit off the sharing platter.
That aside, Esprit have brilliant childcare and Austrian ski school for the kids was top class. We'll be back minus the mountain restaurant experience.

There are 2 aspects to a review of this sort. The first is the chalet hotel itself and the second is the service offered by the staff and company running it.

The location is very good. It is a short 5-minute walk up a small hill and then down to the main Nasserein lift station. It takes about 15 minutes to walk into the heart of St Anton and the one supermarket (Spa). There is a shell petrol station that is very near that has many of the basics, including alcohol.

The chalet is modern and in good condition. It isn’t shabby at all. Heating is mainly underfloor though there are towel racks in all of the bedrooms. These were controlled automatically and only on for limited periods. This makes drying of wet ski clothes sometimes difficult. All of the rooms appeared spacious and very comfortable as family suites. They have good soundproofing and so we barely heard any of the other families staying in the rest of the chalet.
The lounge and dining room are good sizes and had just enough seats. We never had occasions when people were waiting to sit down.

The boot room is a good size with heated racks for more than enough boots. Most of the people in our chalet rented ski deposits in the ski hire place at the lift station (approx. €2/day), which meant there was no carrying of kit. There is a small rack for skis/boards in the garage off the boot room. This was more than adequate.

We have been on holiday with Esprit many times before and like them for the childcare and enjoyment that they provide for our children. We felt this year that the “quality” offered to the adults was not as good as we have previously experienced. The breakfast was limited to a cold buffet style with boiled eggs and porridge (usually lukewarm). However, half way through the week the chalet ran out of yoghurts and filter coffee – no replacements sourced! The only bread was sliced white and baguettes – no brown bread and no croissants. A little bit of attention to the breakfast could have transformed them but I guess that this is determined by Esprit rather than the team on site.

Afternoon tea was great with a huge, substantial cake – just what you need after a hard days skiing. Evening meals were great and Russell, the chef, did a great job with a varied menu and well presented food. Aperitifs & canapés beforehand were really nice and enough to go around. The wine was acceptable though we did feel that the better wines (in our opinions) were only brought out on request.

The chalet staff were all really nice and we didn’t have a problem with any of them. As it is quite a large chalet we didn’t feel that we had the same contact that we might have done in a smaller one and so didn’t really get to know them well.

The children were picked up in the morning to take them to ski school and snow club etc but the timings were rather vague and so one morning I waited 45 minutes in the reception for someone to come for my 3-year old who wasn’t that happy at leaving me, let alone drawing it out over 45 mins. This could be improved by being a little more specific or not waiting until every single child was present and correct before moving off.

We spent a lot of time before booking deliberating between this place and the Pepe. We are glad we chose Adler but were impressed with the Pepe and its location. The Adler has a more chalet feel to it whereas the Pepe is more hotel.

All in all I would recommend Chalet Adler for a great skiing holiday but if you are reading this review for a 2014 holiday the “make or break” depends on the Ski Esprit team and the individuals involved. The chalet is fantastic and I can’t really criticise it in any substantial way.

We have been travelling with Ski-Esprit for about 10 years and seen the company gradually decline. This year we visited the Chalet Adler in St.Anton - one that my wife had been keen to visit for a number of years. This will be our last Esprit holiday and not because we no longer need the child care.

The reasons are that the service, other than child care is poor - Food is not up-to scratch, accommodation is generally dirty and the lack of delegation means that they don't have the ability to buy essential supplies - No coffee for the perculator for days, no apple juice, no honesty bar, no tea spoons, no Rep's turning-up to point you in the right direction for an organised event. Ski-guiding was also very hit or miss and for the first time seemed chargeable for the bus to take you!

It is a shame because Esprit had a niche market and I have long been a great fan, telling everyone I could. I believe the problem is that they have been swallowed-up by bigger companies that don't understand the reason that Esprit could charge a premium. There are others - Ski Famile and Family Ski, who we will now look in to.

Oh and this wasn't just my view, but that of others in the Chalet, as well.

I have to say that Child Care was good and all the staff were very helpfull - unfortunatelly they need strong local management.

Room Tip: There is no lift so the stairs can get tiresome if you are at the top. The balconies look good in...
