My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying in Hotel Sonnleiten for the fourth straight year skiing in St. Johann. The owners, Ottmar and Katrin Meier, are the most hospitable B&B owners we've met and they make us feel like family. We always stay in the same room, the cozy Sport "honeymoon suite" (Room 7). On this visit, we were upgraded to a very large apartment in the annex building for our first night, because our normal room was not available on the first day of our week-long ski trip. It was a lovely apartment but way too large for our needs, so we moved back into the honeymoon suite for the remainder of the week. Every year the owners add new touches. This year all the rooms now had flat-screen TVs and some had new furniture, all tastefully decorated in authentic Austrian-style chalet motif. Most (all?) of the rooms rooms have lovely balconies with dramatic views of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range, and fluffy blankets to cover yourself in the winter. For skiers, there is a small ski room by the garage to store your equipment, but InterSport near the gondola station allows you to leave all your equipment there overnight for 7 Euros a week, a very good option as it saves you from having to lug your skis up the very steep hill to Hotel Sonnleiten. The other reason we love our apartment is the kitchenette. Every morning we cooked our own breakfast before hitting the slopes! The hotel is always spotless, clean and well maintained.
The hotel location is very good. It's located about a 7 minute walk to the main gondola, and a short 5-minute walk down the hill brings you to Max Pub, our favorite place in St. Johann for Apres Ski and nightlife (don't miss karaoke night! the restaurant attached to Max has excellent weinerschnitzel!). It takes about 15 minutes to walk into the heart of downtown St. Johann's old square, where you will find great restaurants, grocery stores, ATMs, ski and gift shops and train station.
We normally fly in to Munich and rent a car for the 90-minute drive to St. Johann, but on this trip we took the train (about 2.5 hours from Munich Hauptbahnhof, or 3 hours from Munich Airport). The St. Johann train station also has regular trains to Kitzbuhel and other nearby ski resorts, but quite frankly we've never been a fan of Kitzbuhel so we just stay in town; St. Johann is WAY more laid back and not pretentious at all.
Incidentally, the snow conditions in Austria were the best we've experienced in five years. If you are lucky enough to ski in 2012, make it happen and stay in Hotel Sonnleiten. You will not be disappointed!
