We had a wonderful stay with Herr & Frau Meier last week, they are so helpful & kind and the apartment - Kalkstein XXL was perfect for our family of 6; spacious, warm & excellently equipped. The scary hill is very steep but you get used to it and it's great for fitness!! Close to the town and the popular Max Pub which is greast for apres ski! Herr Meier recommended the restaurant in the brewery tower to us and it was fantastic traditional Austrian fare though a little smoky. We all want to come back next year

We stayed in the Kaiserblick 2 apartment at half term. Superb location very close to the pistes and gondola. Very well equipped and the apartment suited our 4 adults and 2 children very well. Very thoughtful hosts - offering good advice and assistance. We would very happily go back - maybe in the summer to use the pool too.

We visited as a young group of five (a couple and three friends) in JAN/FEB 2012. Although this was our first stay in St Johann itself, this establishment would have to be the best accommodation in the region.
We stayed in Wilder Kaiser XL for our week long stay. The rooms were spacious, homely and well equipped with a moderate sized kitchen/lounge area complete with coffee peculator, dishwasher, oven and induction stove top. There are stunning views of the Wilder Kaiser range from every room in the apartment.
Sonnleiten's owners/operators Ottmar, Katrin and their son were extremely helpful and always made themselves contactable through their telephone extension. The ski/drying room was always accessible to leave your snow gear in. It has boot drying racks on a timer so you can always be sure of warm, dry boots just before the lifts open up.
Basic amenities were topped up regularly (almost magically) when they were low (i.e. toilet paper rolls, bath towels, salt & pepper!).
Ottmar is a very kindhearted owner who was always willing to talk about the area and his summer hobby of flying light aircraft - be sure to ask him about it when you're there! He has great stories to tell and pictures to show.
The brilliant thing about this area is that is a good base to experience St Johann ski area and as well as the several other ski areas - Steinplatte, Fieberbrunn and Kitzbuhel. Transport to these resorts is typically free with your snow gear and is very efficient. Sonnleiten is located almost on a ski in/out location to the St Johann Gondola and is a short stroll to/from restaurants, nightlife and the town centre. As a side note, take note that many shops/outlets in this quaint town close in the early hours of the afternoon for lunch, so plan your trips into town around this, but otherwise everything on the mountain stays open throughout the day.
Above all you will be very impressed by this accommodation and would recommend it to all travelers as it is neither expensive nor cheap, but instead perfectly priced, especially as we stayed in peak season.
Enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: Wilder Kaiser XL apartment has spectacular views from every room in the apartment!

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying in Hotel Sonnleiten for the fourth straight year skiing in St. Johann. The owners, Ottmar and Katrin Meier, are the most hospitable B&B owners we've met and they make us feel like family. We always stay in the same room, the cozy Sport "honeymoon suite" (Room 7). On this visit, we were upgraded to a very large apartment in the annex building for our first night, because our normal room was not available on the first day of our week-long ski trip. It was a lovely apartment but way too large for our needs, so we moved back into the honeymoon suite for the remainder of the week. Every year the owners add new touches. This year all the rooms now had flat-screen TVs and some had new furniture, all tastefully decorated in authentic Austrian-style chalet motif. Most (all?) of the rooms rooms have lovely balconies with dramatic views of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range, and fluffy blankets to cover yourself in the winter. For skiers, there is a small ski room by the garage to store your equipment, but InterSport near the gondola station allows you to leave all your equipment there overnight for 7 Euros a week, a very good option as it saves you from having to lug your skis up the very steep hill to Hotel Sonnleiten. The other reason we love our apartment is the kitchenette. Every morning we cooked our own breakfast before hitting the slopes! The hotel is always spotless, clean and well maintained.

The hotel location is very good. It's located about a 7 minute walk to the main gondola, and a short 5-minute walk down the hill brings you to Max Pub, our favorite place in St. Johann for Apres Ski and nightlife (don't miss karaoke night! the restaurant attached to Max has excellent weinerschnitzel!). It takes about 15 minutes to walk into the heart of downtown St. Johann's old square, where you will find great restaurants, grocery stores, ATMs, ski and gift shops and train station.

We normally fly in to Munich and rent a car for the 90-minute drive to St. Johann, but on this trip we took the train (about 2.5 hours from Munich Hauptbahnhof, or 3 hours from Munich Airport). The St. Johann train station also has regular trains to Kitzbuhel and other nearby ski resorts, but quite frankly we've never been a fan of Kitzbuhel so we just stay in town; St. Johann is WAY more laid back and not pretentious at all.

Incidentally, the snow conditions in Austria were the best we've experienced in five years. If you are lucky enough to ski in 2012, make it happen and stay in Hotel Sonnleiten. You will not be disappointed!

We visited in August 2011 with our 5 year old daughter and 9 month old son.Great hotel in great location. We hired a car which meant we could explore the surrounding areas. The super market is a 10 minute walk away and all of the local restaurants serve great food and are very family friendly. The hotel pool facilty meant that we could spend an afternoon at the hotel and our Daughter loved the friendly dog that belonged to the hotel owner.
We wanted a mountain hoilday with lots of out door activity and thats what we got.Very good value for money.

Room Tip: we chose a 2 bed apartment which was called kitzbhuler horn

We stayed in the Kaiserblick apartment which was perfect. Very well equipped, totally comfortable, clean and well maintained... and, of course, a stunning view of the Wilder Kaiser mountain!
Family Meier are excllent hosts and we would recommend the Sonnleitn as a family holiday or for couples as well.
Excellent clean facilities - lovely outdoor pool with lots of loungers umbrellas etc.
St Johann is a very good base for a holiday in the Tirol lots to do and many other fantastic places to visit within a short drive. Plenty of good places to eat in St Johann itself and all the shops you need for self-catering.

Room Tip: The views are all good, the website is very helpful in getting the right apartment for your needs

My wife and I recently returned from a very relaxing two week stay in June at the Sonnleiten.

Our stay was in one of the self-catering apartments for two people and was very neat and clean with nice traditional décor and equipped with everything we needed.

The apartment’s star feature was the balcony with its fantastic panoramic view over the valley and the dramatic Wilder Kaiser Mountains with the village of St Johann below.
It was a lovely peaceful setting and at times the only sound we could hear was the signing of birds in the forest just beside the apartments. Now and again too, we caught sight of a squirrel among the trees. Below the balconies, the sunny pool and garden area was very clean and well maintained.

It is only a short 5 to 10 minute walk to the centre of the village of St Johann. There are two good sized supermarkets on the main street –this is great when self catering as everything we needed was within walking distance -the village also has a good selection of restaurants and cafes.

As an earlier reviewer here has pointed out, the Sonnleiten is located up a hill on a steep incline, but don’t let this put you off ,as we found that the walk up the hill was actually quite short and easily manageable even when we were carrying shopping bags.

The Hotel Sonnleiten is family run, very friendly and informal and the owner ,Ottmar Meier is eager to offer information on the local attractions.
We availed of the optional, morning bread delivery service which Ottmar provides. It was so great to get up every morning and find your fresh bread rolls hanging there in a bag on your apartment door. A simple little extra service which added to the luxury of our stay.

Yes we will definitely go back and we are already planning our next trip.
