Having stayed at the Hotel Crystal for several years I can honestly say the food has always been very good !! But this year sees a new young chef on the scene and all I can say is WOW !! Most definitely all home cooked and a delight on every level !! The hotel has lived up to its wonderful comfort, cleanliness and welcome for us again this year in a great location a few minutes walk from town and almost on the doorstep for the gondolas to take you up the mountain for fabulous walks and views ! We have come home much heavier but can't wait for our next stay here !

Room Tip: Book a room with a balcony.

Having read several reviews about the Hotel Crystal, all I can say is that we were more than satisfied with our first stay in the hotel..
We were on half board and all the meals were very good. A wide choice of cold meats, cheeses and jams at breakfast. Boiled and scrambled eggs together with either bacon or sausages.
Dinner was a five course meal with an excellent choice of dishes, well presented and well served.
The staff were very attentive and made one feel most welcome.
Our room was very clean and spacious with a good mountain views from the balcony. Our only complaint was that the bathroom door was smoked glass and situated next to the toilet. Not the best of choices for privacy, but I understand that this may have been the only way that the bathroom could be modified.
We would certainly consider staying at the hotel in the future

Positives
- A very high standard of cleaning. Our room was left spotless every day and towels were changed daily.
- Sonia made our holiday. Such a kind and cheerful lady who served in the dining room.
- St Johann is a lovely small town to visit and we did some great scenic walks in the surrounding area.
- Our balcony was nice and we had a great view of the mountain.

Negatives
- the other recent reviews are completely accurate. The owner Mrs Huber was very frosty and unpleasant towards us and other guests who we met during the trip. Her presence lowered the atmosphere of the hotel considerably. I did not see one smile towards us and the other UK guests during our whole trip there.
- food was varied. Some nights were excellent (the steak entrecôte was delicious) and others not so good (turkey covered in egg). However the chef was a lovely, smiley, pleasant man who we met one evening.
- the walls were pretty thin, we could hear the people above the room next to us!
- we noticed that one member of male staff was very chatty and pleasant to German speaking guests, but hardly interacted with us English speaking guests and certainly not with the same level of friendliness.

We were so excited about our holiday here. Sadly on the first night we were both left feeling embarrassed by the same male member of staff who loudly told my partner he would have to go back upstairs and change as he was wearing sandals/flip flop type shoes, despite the dress code for dinner being described as casual on the operator website. Apparently it was ok for women to wear this footwear, but not men. I wouldn't class different clothing allowances for different genders as falling under casual dress code. Guests should be notified of any rules prior to dinner time.

Please beware there is a 5 euro per day charge for 'dietary requirements'. We were not told about this charge when we first notified the hotel of dietary requirements and it was not on the website, it was brought to our attention later on.

Overall, we would visit the region again, but definitely not stay in this hotel.

Room Tip: Don't choose this hotel.

As similar reviews I have just read I could not agree more! My son and I have just returned from a week at crystal. Sonja and Ivana were the only two friendly faces at the hotel, thank goodness for them!!!!
The elderly owner was rude and unwelcoming. Christian was friendly towards German speaking guests but not English. On arrival here I received the most unwelcome reception from a hotel I've ever experienced. The food lacked choice. Sometimes delicious sometimes awful. The hotel was clean without doubt . We were in room three and were woken by traffic , a noisy family next door and cleaning in dining area below at 615 onemorning. I didn't complain due to the owners very poor attitude. We loved Austria but would never go to hotel crystal again.

Having read all the positive reviews of this hotel, we were looking forward to our week here in July, but I am afraid I cannot be as enthusiastic as others. We did receive a warm and cheerful welcome from Sonja - thank heavens for her, as she was the only happy face we saw all week, and was always smiling and helpful. The owner, an older lady, should be ashamed of herself - she was miserable, downright rude at times, and certainly not pleased to have you in her hotel. She actually asked us to leave the dining room one morning, as we had finished our breakfast, and were chatting quietly with another couple nearby - breakfast didn't finish for another 20 mins., and the girls were busy resetting other tables, so we were not holding them up at all. Service in the dining room was excellent, and attentive, but the girls did not smile and were not friendly. Food was inconsistent. We enjoyed some delicious meals, always very nicely presented, but others not so good at all, and by the end of the week we were skipping courses. Drinks, including wine and cocktails were very reasonably priced - try the Austrian wine and you must have a Hugo. At breakfast, items were often not replenished, so although never late, we frequently missed out on bacon or sausages, and I never once got any cranberry juice, as there was only one carton, and once it was gone, that was it. Our best breakfast was on our last morning when 10 of us were leaving at 7.25a.m. and they did breakfast early for us - it was plentiful and hot.

Rooms were very compact, with only one small drawer each for underwear, socks etc., and not nearly enough hanging space - between 12 and 15 inches for both of us, so tops and shirts for the evening had to remain folded, as there was only enough room for trousers to hang. The bathroom was lovely, kept very clean and towels replaced each day. We had lovely views from our verandah, but were unfortunate enough to have people above us who constantly, and I mean constantly, dragged their table and chairs from one position to another. With rooms being so small, there was no room to sit away from your neighbours while on the verandah, and you had to whisper so as not to disturb one another. We had 2 german speaking ladies on one side of us, and their conversations were very loud.

St Johann is a very attractive little town, with entertainment some evenings, and good public transport - we used both buses and trains. All the hotels are within easy walking distance of the town, where there is a SPAR supermarket, and they will make you up a filled roll/sandwich of your choice, if you are going walking/hiking for the day - cheaper and more interesting than the packed lunch from the hotel.

English is spoken everywhere, so no language problems experienced.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday - Austria is beautiful - but we won't be returning to the Crystal. It is rather worrying that it is rated no.1 hotel in St Johann.

Just spent a week at Hotel Crystal and don't know where to start, so will try and find a few positives

The food varied between excellent and nothing better than a greasy spoon. The soup was straight from a packet!
The waitresses at dinner were friendly and very amenable.
Overall cleanliness in the hotel was very good
The rooms were clean, although we did find the previous guests underwear in the wardrobe.
There were fresh towels every day
The shower in the room was excellent

Now for the negatives
Our room could only be described as compact, we have experienced larger en suites
The bedding was not changed during our stay - 7 days
Our room was on the first floor directly above the patio area where other guests gathered and talked late into the night. Very early each morning the same area was cleaned which meant that chairs and tables were moved creating more noise!
Mrs Huber (senior) was very frosty and negative towards our few requests, we were left feeling that we were an irritation to her
She advised us that there would be a charge for the use of the Sauna, Solarium etc in the hotel, however we have seen it advertised on booking.com as being free!
There is also a daily charge for Wifi which is not made clear on the website

We had an early departure at 0715 (breakfast starts at 0730) and were advised on the evening before that we had left it too late to order a pot of hot water with tea bags (no milk) and one roll each, wrapped in a paper bag. Mrs Huber (senior) was adamant that we were in the wrong, eventually she reluctantly provided us with the aforesaid, apparently someone else had ordered on time but didn't collect the precious fare. Alas, at 0630 the following morning the water in the flask was luke warm and the rolls were inedible having been made at least 9 hours before and stored in our 'non air conditioned' room.
.
We have stayed all over the world in all types of accommodation and have never witnessed this kind of treatment from front of house, it was shocking and hurtful to say the least. Fortunately we are very positive, happy, cheery and polite people and this extremely unpleasant experience has not put us off visiting the lovely people of Austria again. One of the reasons we chose this Hotel was because of the 5 star rating given by Trip advisor, the award from Trip advisor to Hotel Crystal took pride of place on the reception desk next to Mrs Huber whilst she carried out this unbelievable behaviour!
We will return to Austria, but DEFINITELY NOT to Hotel Crystal.

Room Tip: Choose another Hotel!

Stayed here in the last week of July 2014. We received a frosty 'welcome' by the lady of the house and were made to feel like intruders. It seemed everything was a problem for her, a feeling shared by other guests.
The room was very small (most rooms here are small), lighting was poor, and this made it all too easy to stub ones toe on the doorstop in the middle of the floor which was there to protect the wardrobe from the opening main door.
Facilities are limited and reluctantly made available. Breakfast is an adequate but unexciting buffet selection, while the 4 course dinner varied between excellence and unrecognisable inedibility. Dinner service lasts only until 8pm (last meal start time), which is far too early in a town with limited evening entertainment.
Last straw for us was the failure to provide breakfast for those leaving at 7.15 to 7.45 a.m. even though breakfast is generally available from 7.30...... A number of us decided to enjoy a quick buffet while waiting for transfer transport but again were made to feel like thieves by the owner even though this was breakfast number 7 at the end of 7 days half board accomodation.
Other staff were very pleasant despite the poor example set by their employer.
We shall go back to the region, but NEVER to the Crystal hotel
