Waldrand
Reviewed 7 March 2010

We have been to Austria 8 times before and have always had good hospitality and food, the difference with the Waldrand is it was excellent hospitality and food! Good choices, good variety and cooked to perfection. Breakfast 7.30 - 9.30, dinner 6.30 - 7.00 in very spacious, clean, relaxed dining room.
George works tirelessly and is a mine of tourist information, all delivered in excellent English, we didn't need the reps. (We needed pharmacy items, he knew where and when to go to the doctors 'house').
Despite what other reviews have stated our room was not small, plus it was bright, warm and airy with a view of craggy snow capped Alps (rooms the other side had views over to the pistes). The shower never ran cold (despite being in there a while to soothe aching muscles). Towels changed daily, bed made, extra pillows on request, the bed very comfortable!
Boot room kept boots dry & warm for morning, cute roomy ski/board hut in garden.
At the end of the day sun was shining on the garden so lovely to sit and relax with a beer!
Short cut to skibus stop took approx 3 mins to walk even in ski boots.
The Ski Welt is obviously an excellent piste region (look at a piste map for the variety of runs, easy links to other resorts).
Yes, Scheffau is a smaller resort than Soll & Ellmau but they are both within easy reach, the Village Pub in Scheffau is like an English pub (open til 1am) with good atmosphere, and music to suit all tastes (just complete a playlist request slip for your favourite!) and is a 2 minute stroll 'home'. For anyone interested in walking (we like a day off skiing mid week) there are many walks through the forest trails, or by road, including to beautiful Hintersteiner See (George also supplies walking maps/advice!)
The Waldrand is excellent value for money and comes highly receommended from me!
If my husband's knee stands up to more skiing we will definitely be going back!

It was my first ski holiday and I absolutely loved it! And the hotel we stayed contributed a lot to this great ski holiday. The Waldrand hotel is very conveniently located in Scheffau, which is about a few mins walk to the shuttle bus to the ski resort. The room was basic, but kept very clean. One of the nicest things about our room is that it has its own balcony looking out to the snow mountain, and we spent a lot of time there in the afternoon drinking beer and chatting away happily.

George the landlord and his family made sure our stay was very hospitable. The food they provided at breakfast and dinner were simply delightful. Especially the dinner, which was always something we could look forward to at the end of days of skiing, was a wonderful 4 course meal, and everything was homemade too! They actually handpicked blackberries to garnish the dessert one night and I still miss the clear soup with pancake.

The only thing I wish they had was a hot tub or Jacuzzi, so we could relax at the end of a hard day. They do have a sauna room though which I never used. Also it's best to go with a group of friends or bring some board games with you, coz Scheffau is a quiet little town with nothing much to do at night.

Overall, Waldrand offers good value for money, with a real touch of home feel.

Whilst this Hotel will not appeal to those who like their Spas/Pools/Fluffy duvets, it will certainly appeal to any cash strapped Brit who appreciates being within a very reliable 5 min bus ride (every 12 mins) of the greatest Ski area in Austra (Ski Welt). This was our 3rd trip to the area and, with plenty of snow, we had a great time. Yes, for another £200 each, in many Elmau,Soll or Scheffau 4 star Hotels, we could have had a higher spec room and bed, fancier food and more "entertainment" but we came for the skiing not the frills. In any case, George and Ingrid are great hosts who put on a perfectly acceptable and very reliable 4 course meal every night. The drinks prices are fair and the food range at breakfast is as good as you will see at most Austrian hotels unless you are looking for standard British fare. Basically, you get what you pay for leaving you with more money to spend on Ski lessons or even a return holiday the following year. We would certainly consider going back!

The Hotel
The hotel food was great, nothing fancy but just the ticket after a hard day skiing. George and Ingrid the owners work so hard and nothing was too much trouble. The sauna was great too to relax in although it was a little bit small when it's mixed sex! Our only two complaints would be the size of our room (209) was tiny and very little storage and the hotel would benefit from its own private bar rather than one that is in the dining room. Carlos the dog is great.

Resort
Scheffau is a very quiet resort and only has one shop, a Spar and one bar so don't expect much to do at night. The skiing was excellent as it is linked to the Ski Welt and it is really easy to ski around it to visit other ski resorts. If you're after good skiing and night life I would suggest Ellmau or Soll.

Just returned from a week at the Waldrand.
Owners George and Ingrid very friendly and helpful, Carlo the dog more interested in sleeping on the rug in reception.
Room was large with good shower and plenty of hot water although furnishings a little tired.
Food was much better than expected, breakfast the usual meats, cheeses and preserves plus boiled eggs. Dinner started with a large salad buffet of around 10 items followed by a good soup. Only 2 choices of main (1 veggie) but this was enough and followed by dessert. I've had smaller quantities and poorer quality at higher star rated hotels in Austria.
Beer and wine was good value at €3 for 0.5/0.25 litres. Only drawback is there is no bar or lounge area so you stay at your table for after dinner drinks.
Overall excellent value for the price, pity about the weather, it snowed all week apart from 1 day and 1 morning with very poor visibility. Skiing was made more difficult by lack of piste maintenance leaving moguls on even blue runs.

We stayed at the Waldrand the first week in January. Initial impressions were dissappointing - the room was rather basic with very old and shabby furniture and the room was rather small despite paying a supplement of £140 for a larger room for the week. Not sure what you get if you book a small room! We were lucky that we hadn't brought too much stuff with us as the wardrobe was tiny - the clothes had to be hung side on as the wardrobe wasn't deep enough. The bathroom also very small.

However, after our initial dissappointment things picked up. George was very helpful if there was anything you needed and the meals were generally pretty good and plentiful. The hotel was also clean, warm and had plenty of hot water. We liked the family atmosphere at the Waldrand and enjoyed the company of Carlo the dog - a mild natured St Bernard.

The hotel was convenient for the slopes - 5 min bus ride to the main gondola with the bus running about every 15 mins and the bus stop a 5 minute walk in ski boots.

Ski Welt area provides great skiing - 278km of piste - there are now new lifts linking the Westendorf area to the rest of Ski Welt - new for 2008/9.

As mentioned by previous reviewers Scheffau is a quiet picturesque village with not much night life - if you've come for the skiing and are happy with the a good meal and a quiet pint or two in the hotel or the one or two bars in the village you'll like it. If you're after somewhere more lively I'd try Soll.

Overall, if you are looking for a good skiing holiday with all your basic needs well provided for without breaking the bank, this guest house fits the bill.

The fact we have returned to the waldrand tells you we have had no problems, George and Ingrid, (and Carlos the dog) have always been very hospitable, even late in the season when you can see they are totally exhausted and looking forward to a good
rest.
I asked Ingrid once what she does at the end of the season...
'' I go up into the mountains find a cave and sleep, like a marmot''
made me chuckle..
George has a dry sense of humour, and is very witty once you have 'tuned in'.
The Waldrand has always been spotless, well laid out and warm, I would hate to pay their heating bill. The rooms are a decent size, and are cleaned and beds made up every day.

The dining area is cosy and has an easy going atmosphere. We've had some good chats with other guests, over a beer or two (or three).

Breakfast is buffet style, just help yourself to cheeses meats cereals boiled eggs toast, more than I get at home!
Evening meals are plentyfull as well, George takes your order, from a choice of two main meals, in the morning for that evening,
and the deserts are very moreish. One thing I do like at this Hotel,
You can see into the kitchen, spotless, not like some places where the kitchen is hidden away, and makes you wonder how your meal is being prepared.

Outside, the the ski shop and bus stop are only a couple of hundred metres away (if that). the ski shop is busy on your first day, when collecting your skis, but this is the same everywhere.
The ski bus runs every ten to fifteen mins and is only a five mins (max) drive to the gondola. Or, as they say, 'weather permitting'
you can ski down to the gondola where you have to remove your skis and walk through a tunnel under the main road and across a car park, to be honest I'd take the bus.

George doesn't allow smoking in the hotel, maybe in the rooms, not too sure as I'm not a smoker, a couple of bars in the village
are smoking bars and can get a bit ''foggy' at times. Living in Ireland we have got used to the smoking ban (best thing that ever happened) I just wish they would do it in Austria, just think, you spend all day out in the fresh air with plenty of excersize,
then go for a beer and stand in a smoke filled room all evening!!

Have been to plenty of resorts over the years some good some not so good. But a trip back to Scheffau and the Waldrand is something I do look forward to, I would reccommend it to anyone
who wants a good day skiing with easy access to the slopes, a decent meal, a quiet beer and a good nights kip. Those that want to be out all night on the p...Soll or Elmau are the places to go.

Have booked the 10th jan 09 can't wait, see you there!
