The house is beautifully refinished to its original state. You can take your own tour, but one of the rangers does a scheduled tour throughout the day which gives the history of the house and the family. The guided tour is worth taking if you're not familiar with John Muir. Christmas is a sensation at the house when it's decorated for the holidays, if you can arrange to be in Martinez during the holidays, but call ahead to make sure the house has been done.

This is a 4 star stop for us but it is absolutely nothing extravagant. You could probably walk the grounds and house in about 30 minutes. We spent about an hour and a half on the grounds with a 4 year old and a 1 year old and our dog. They have a picnic area and also have kids fair stuff once a month. For anyone interested in the Muir History this is a wonderful stop. We did manage to grab a couple plums while we walked and in general its just a very pleasant place to stop and take a load off while learning some of the local history.

We were fortunate enough to have a passionate ranger who gave us a fabulous talk that focused on John Muir the person and his similar passion for setting aside areas as parks. This ranger spoke for about 45 minutes as he took us around the bottom floor of the house. Afterward we were free to explore the rest of the home on our own. It was a very enlightening visit made memorable by the ranger. I haven't encountered many rangers who seemed to thoroughly enjoy what they were doing in my 35 years if visiting National Park sites but this one certainly did.

The Muir Woods park is so majestic and beautiful. I would have been sad to have been so close and not gone. It's a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Wine Valley and San Francisco.

This place is unique and gives you a good history of the Martinez area, besides John Muir there is also a Spanish style adobe built by a Mexican founding family that is neglected in the description.
