“Great value, does what is says on the tin”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

Stopped here first week in January, a group of 5 40yr olds.

Location - as described its a 7 min walk to the good apres ski bars and about a 10 min hike to the Stoll shop and nursey slopes. Ski bus 50 yards away but times arent great.

Pension: fantastic young chalet type Crystal staff who are always willing to help/assist and normally around till 10.30pm. Fantastic brekkie with a changing hot option in addition to the usual cereal and bread/cheese/meat. Coffee/tea available 24hrs a day and homemade cakes/biscuits from 4pm every day. Great lounge area with fab views to have a beer and a relax in. Rooms are the standard austrian style and basic. Bathrooms are tired and basic but function. You get what you pay for here like most pensions/guesthouses in Austria.

Would certainly go back as really good value and the breakfast makes a refreshing change!! Also offer beers, water, Jaegers, crisps and packed lunches which are great options.

Room Tip: Get one with private facilities where possible

Pension Scherntanner does what it says on the tin.

If you are looking for a low cost, spotlessly clean, warm, friendly place to dump your bags and lay your head after a hard days skiing / boarding / drinking, then this is the place for you.

We had a room in the eves which wasnt huge and meant we had to share a bathroom on the landing, but this was only with one other room in the opposite eves so access was never a problem and was reflected in the price paid. The hot water was plentiful, both in the morning and in the evening.

The chalet is a 10 minute walk to the town centre, which is no big deal in the evenings and the ski bus stop is just behind the chalet and runs every 20mins between 8am-10am. It takes about 10 minutes to take you out to the gondolas / ski garage and is definitely the way to go.

The chalet staff were all young but really friendly and helpful. If we needed anything such as more toilet roll, a fresh towel, or our room cleaned, we just asked! They also provided a cooked option for breakfast every morning on top of the continental buffet which was much appreciated.

I should add, that due to the price the Chalet is predominantly used by young(ish) revellers who are prone to coming home after the Whiskey Muhle closes at 3am. If you are a light sleeper or this is the kind of thing that is going to annoy you, then you might want to look elsewhere, particularly if you are a family with young children.

I would recommend this accomodation to any budget conscious, easy going travellers. If you want free wifi, sat tv, fancy decor and facilities, dont be so tight, pay the money and you will get what you want!

Room Tip: The eves rooms are much smaller and dont have en suite facilities, make sure the price you pay refle...

We stayed at the Scherntanner for a Christmas skiing holiday (we are a family of four) and found it to be an excellent base. The Crystal chalet staff were very friendly and there was fresh tea and coffee and home made cookies on our arrival. The bedrooms are spacious, we used rooms 3 and 4 which are triple rooms overlooking the slopes with an adjoining balcony. I would recommend these rooms for families as both have their own en-suite and are spacious. They are however, 'no frills' rooms, so there is no TV, kettle or other mod cons, there is also no shower gel, soaps or creams provided in the bathroom, so stock up on these items and bring them from home, or the local Spar Shop which is nearby also sells them.

A real positive was that each day, there was freshly made home baked cake available along with hot drinks in the breakfast room from 3.30pm, this filled a gap before dinner. The breakfasts are continental with a different hot option each day. What did also come across was that the chalet team worked hard to impress the guests, keeping the rooms to a high standard of cleanliness and the cakes were to a very high standard. There is also a comfortable and welcoming living room which guests can relax in in the evening, which is stocked with a number of board games (I didn't ever see anyone use these, but they are there).

We had opted for the Crystal 'half board' option; this basically is vouchers for meals in four local restaurants, you choose the restaurant the night before and book it and on the night you are provided with a three course 'fixed price' meal in exchange for the voucher. The food tends to be the most simple and basic on the menu, typically a soup starter, pasta main dish and pancake / ice cream pudding. It was fine for a family meal and of the restaurants the Postwirt Restaurant was by far the best, both in terms of the food and service.

Don't be put off by the walk; we stored all of our ski gear at the Stoll ski garage so didn't find the 15 minute walk a problem to the ski garage in the mornings or back in the evening. There is a bus which stops outside the Stoll hire shop which is free and takes you to the gondola or you can ski to the drag lifts from there. I would recommend this accommodation to people who don't mind a little bit of a walk to the slopes and who would like a more homely environment at a cheaper price than the big hotels.

I dont know where these negative reviews have came from, the crystal reps are great, fried breakfast every morning, freshly baked cakes in the evening.... the rooms are roasting hot, later on in the evening the water is not very hot (as the other guests have it all used) but thats such a minor compliant... absolutely loved it will be booking this place again next year!!!
Ita a 5 minute walk into town, if you use the paths accross the fields.... but its not an issue

Just back from a week skiing in soll with my wife and we stayed in the scherntanner and was really impressed with it, if you don't mind a bit of noise at night and a blocked shower drain . Every morning there was a choice of cooked breakfasts prepared by the chalet girls or you can pre-order porridge or have ham and cheese with bread rolls or cereal, also there was complimentary cake and tea in the kitchen from around 3.30 pm which was a nice touch.

Location was great about 7 minutes to town centre a nice walk in the evening to walk off some dinner.
Overall I really rate this place and it was good value for money.

Seasoned ski travellers know that, with Crystal, you get what you pay for...and little else. The Scherntanner is a good example of this. Its clearly seen much better times, and is a bit worse for wear! Upholstery is worn, windows open a bit reluctantly, doors and locks are worn, beds are old and firm(ours, very firm!) However,on the up side..it is warm, clean and well located IMHO.
The ski bus stop is 25mtrs up the road(outside the Teresa),stopping at 26mins past the hour in the morning. Its about 10mins from the centre of Soll, and about 25mins from the Gondola station. It has a ski/boot room, but don't bother with this(more on this in a moment).
Looking at other reviews, one thing jumps out...the quality of staff. This is the one big variable with Crystal.Firstly, they are all young 20 somethings. Some are really good...others not so great...its a lottery? Crystal can train them as much as they like, but training does not instill common sense, and this is sometimes lacking. Our 'host' had not even taken the time to read the ski bus timetable! And most questions asked by other guests were answered by 'err..I'm not sure',I'll ask the rep when he calls! None of this was a problem to me,I know Soll well;but a first timer might be be a bit lost for a day or two?
Others have covered breakfast times and options,as well as room clean but no towell change. Weds is the hosts day off.Breakfast is provided on Weds, though in our case only just...she overslept! Thus,we had few bowls or mugs, and were forced to washup our own! No butter or bread, but loads of cheese and ham...we managed.
With Crystal reps you will always get advice...but not always the best advice? Ski storage is a good example of this. The Scherntanner has a ski/boot room, and they have an arrangement with a ski garage half way up the gondola road(which they will point you towards).Don't bother with either. Underneath the main gondola is Edingers shop and ski store. As soon as you can, grab your skis/boots,hop on a bus,and go to Edingers. It will cost you around €15 for the week...and its worth every cent.Ultra friendly staff(mostly English),nice warm boots every morning, short walk up to the gondola(and easy return),and a cracking coffee machine.Best option by far.
To sum up.Soll is great, with some good skiing across a massive area.Be sure to go to Westendorf and Hoftgarten. The Scherntanner is old and tired, but a good base.Get the best deal you can...its poor value at brochure prices. Its in a quiet area but well connected, within easy walking distance of town.Expect the same type of service that you would get from your own 20yr old son/daughter!

Room Tip: No lift,so it can be a bit of a slog with your bags. Read the room description carefully if a balcon...

I stayed at this pension over the christmas period. It was out of town and not that easy to find after a night out. In fact got lost on the 1st night! The accommodation was basic. I had an attic room without an ensuite. The shower room was along the corridor. There was no soap provided so I used shower gel. Toilet paper ran out and was not replaced immediately. The breakfast was adequate but although there was coffee and tea avaliable in the mornings there was no hot water when returning from a night out.The staff were friendly and for the price paid I suppose reflected what you got!

Room Tip: Ask for an en-suite if they have them.
