“Great Hotel, Staff and Facilities Excellent, Great Value”
Reviewed 5 December 2010

I have brought my family to this hotel 5 times in the last 7 years. My 2 boys absolutely love this hotel for it's ambience and very friendly staff. Hotel facilities are excellent with indoor/outdoor pool and wellness center. Food is superb this is by far the best hotel in Westendorf situated 4/5 mins walk from the slopes. Westendorf is small village with good skiing and is well linked to other skiing areas for the more advanced skiers. This hotel and Westendorf offer great value when it comes to skiing holidays (as it is not a cheap holiday). Kitzbuehl is 20 mins away and is great for shopping and restaurants I have recommended this hotels to many of my friends who have all had similar experiences to our family.

This hotel, set in a nice resort, did not quite live up to its billing. In all family run hotels the tone has to set by its owner. Although good-humoured we found him a bit frivolous with the guests. He joined in the serving of the dinner on a couple of occasions and added nothing to the evening by making silly throw away comments like "here is your dinner, whatever it is." Most of the staff in the dining area tried very hard as we battled constantly against the large number of flies. We complained about these but were told that it is a continuous problem to which there was no solution. The tables in the dining room were set too close together restricting privacy. The evening of live entertainment was a group of tired old men playing retro music; this was a deeply embarrassing. Reception staff were very good and helpful.

We stay at the Schermer every year and will continue to do so. The rooms are lovely, the location excellent and the staff friendly. However, Herr Schermer really needs to decide whether he wants his hotel to be a beautiful, sophisticated spa hotel or a children's playground. Unfortunately we hit the week of Dutch half term and the usually quiet village was swamped and the hotel was drowning in badly behaved children and parents. The children screamed all day and all night in every part of the hotel. They took their toys and sit on cars into the dining room, they trod water from the pool into the lift right up until midnight. They ran screaming around the bar constantly. Even when indulging in a spa treatment in a closed room you could hear them. If you wanted to use the pool without being dive bombed, forget it. The hotel made no effort to keep the children at bay, and they never do. You just need to be prepared for it.
The food remains mediocre, so it was no hardship to eat out almost every night, but we shouldn't have to. Of course children should be welcome, but not allowed to dominate everything 24/7. If it is the Mark Warner style holiday the Schermer seeks to provide, it really should stop aiming itself at the couples and relaxation seekers side of the market.

The Hotel Schermer is very well located within easy walking distance of the town and the lift systems, and snow permitting, you can ski back almost to the back door of the hotel in the afternoon. The staff and owners are all very friendly and helpful, and provide excellent service and create an enjoyable atmosphere. Our Brixental bedroom was quiet, large, and with a balcony and good views, however the lighting in the room was quite dim. The service in the bar and restaurant was excellent, but the choice and variety of food could be improved upon.
On arrival the hotel was heavily populated by families with very young children, and later in the week a large Polish group of 80+ arrived, who tended to noisily dominate certain parts of the hotel. Both the above did not seem to fit comfortably into the 4 star superior standard, that the hotel aims for, and does not mix well with the quieter older residents. As with most Austrian hotels there is a distinct lack of non smoking lounge areas, at the the Schermer the bar is in the centre of the hotel next to the restaurant areas, and is a smoking area.

We have stayed at this wonderful hotel for the last three years, with good snow and bad snow. But this hotel hotel has wonderful food and a lovely atmosphere a great spa area in which we relax in after a hard days skiing. we first booked with inghams but now book direct, better value for money and flexible travelling days, this time we stayed for 10 days. westendorf is the place the early learners should go to because of its fantastic village nursery slope with chair lift( no t-bar) thank god! This is the best hotel in westendorf, location a few minutes to ski school and slopes. I would advise private lessons instead of groups because they overload the group sizes! 14 is to many. we hope to return in 2009 to meet old new friends at this wonderful hotel and resort.

The Hotel Schermer has an excellent location in Westendorf only minutes from the center and ski slopes. The location means that you are not disturbed by any noise from outside.

When you arrive you notice straight away that you have arrived in a classy hotel. You are greeted with a glass of sparkling wine and once you have finished this you are shown personally to your room.

The hotel's public areas are exceptionally clean and well looked after.

The spa area and swimming pool are lovely. You can relax on very comfortable beds whilst looking out across the mountains. There is a well stocked tea bar within this area which provides a large range of herbal teas, water with different stones in! and both fresh and dried friuts. You are provided with a spa area towel, slippers, bath robe and bag in your room fro use within the pool area. There are also a range of saunas and showers for you to try. We did not indulge in any beauty treatements but they did look good and staff seemed very friendly. Top tip: walk through the sauna area and you will discover an additional relaxation room which is child free!

Our room was of a reasonable standard furnished in the traditional Austrian way. We did have a balcony, however a little on the small side if you wanted to sit out. Some of the furnishings in the room could have been updated as the chairs were threadbare and the stuffing was coming out! Also, the sheet I had on my bed had a large rip in it which had been sewn up! Not very comfortable to sleep on and really a 4 star hotel should not try to recycle old and damaged sheets. Again, just like the rest of the hotel the room was very clean.

Our room was not particularly quiet. There were lots of families staying in the hotel and the children took delight in running along the corridors and screaming either early in the morning or late at night. Our room was opposite a lift and had stone floors outside so everything echoed. You could also hear the guests next door using the toilet!

Our only other major complaint was the food. The brakfast had a reasonable choice and you could have yours eggs and bacon cooked freshly. However, you did see food from the previous night recycled for breakfast and the cereal was put out uncovered at 7pm the previous evening whist guests were eating their evening meal! The bread rolls were not very fresh and by the time you wanted bread in the evening it was left over from breakfast and the afternoon snack and was therefore stale! For the evening meal there was a choice of 3 main dishes (not sure what you would eat if you were a veggie as there was only one evening with a meat and fish free option). We did however have beef soup 3 nights in a row! We had to leave before breakfast on our day of departure and reception staff were shocked when we requested breakfast. They did oblige by leaving a tray with coffee, rolls, ham, butter, cheese spread, jam and orange juice in our room at 9pm the night before we left. The rolls were once again stale and the coffee luke warm, the cheese and butter had melted because the room was so warm!

We would recommend this hotel as it does appear to be the best in Westendorf and the actual village of Westendorf is worth a visit.

Devon. January 2007. We have just returned from our second trip to Hotel Schermer at Westerndorf in the Tyrol. We are a mixed age/ability family group with four teenage snowboarders. I think that the hotel may be a bit pricey compared to others in the town but it is worth every euro! The location is very central (the town is small anyway) Five minute walk to the nursery slope and chair lift. A curtesy bus runs from the main gondola into the village all day long, (just in case you didn't fancy skiing the whole mountain back to the village). The ski school we used was 'The Reds'. They are mostly local people, very friendly & knowlegdable. Westerndorf and most of Europe suffered from lack of snow, there were plenty of available snow canons but the temperature was not suffuciently low enough to use them. This said, the 'piste bashers' were out in force every evening and somehow managed to groom the slopes enough for a full weeks skiing. The resort is a truly delightful genuine Tyrolean gem. The hotel was even better than last year, with a separate vegetarian menu. The highlight for the four hungry teenage boys was a huge free apres ski buffet, served from 3-5pm. The pool and spa treatments were again, excellent.
