“Authentic and serene hill-top retreat”

We had the pleasure of spending two weeks at the cozy and authentic Villa Lavrika in the small Pruhari stone house settlement in the beautiful hills of Buzet. We were 6 adults, one child and two dogs. Prior to our arrival we had a great correspondence with the hosts, so we were very confident that everything was in order when we left for Croatia – and it surely was. Arriving late Saturday evening, after a long car ride (from Denmark to Croatia) we where greeted by four very hospitable people - Irena, Miljenko, Mladen and Jasminka - who had arranged a home cooked meal for us, all set up and ready at the dining table. The house was everything we hoped for – authentic in style and charmingly decorated, but with all modern necessities available (TV, Wi-fi (way better connection than expected!), bean-to-cup coffee machine etc.) Beds for everyone and two nice bathrooms (one with shower, one with bathtub) which made the morning routines a little easier being such a large group of people. We spent most of our stay outside in the garden area closest to the house. This is a nice green area with grass, bushes and trees. In an elevated part of the grounds the swimmingpool is located. This was a popular hangout during a great part of our stay – as the high temperatures "forced us" to take a good amount of swims in the cooling water. Here we cooked multiple meals in the outdoor pizza oven and on the firewood grill placed close to an outdoor dining area – an entertaining and exciting way to cook, when you are normally used to prepare all your meals on a regular stove and oven. The area around the house is ideal for hiking, and we had the pleasure of being accompanied by Arga (the hosts' dog) on all our trips. She guards the house, keeps the wild boars away and was incredibly open to both us strangers and our dogs. Our hosts were very helpful in regards to recommendations on sights, restaurants and local specialities (I can highly recommend Fuži with game – try it at konoba "Vrh"). For instance we received a hand-drawn map of the market area in Rijeka and a list of translations so we could go shopping for fresh foods on the market, rather than just going to the supermarket. Our landlord even proposed to shop for us at a couple of local farmers in the nearby area, where we could get fresh lamb, vegetables, cheeses etc. I must emphasise the necessity of having a vehicle when staying at Villa Lavrika – the serenity and privacy you get, is on the cost of "convenience" in regards to easy shopping. You need to drive when you go shopping. We found that the Plodine supermarked in Buzet was the closest option, and this is approximately 7km from the house. After two weeks of exploring Istria by car (Trieste, Poreč, Pula, Rijeka, Grožnjan and Buzet) and recharging ourselves in the tranquil atmosphere at Villa Lavrika, we ended our stay with an incredible dinner cooked by our hosts. It was an amazing evening with wonderful food and great company by Irena, Miljenko, and Mladen, where we enjoyed local wine and beer, shared stories and talked about Croatia. I highly recommend staying at Villa Lavrika for anyone looking for an authentic experience, with good hosts in nice surroundings.

Liked best: The outdoor pizzaoven and firewood grill – I love cooking and it was a great experience to try. Furthermore we were allowed to pick herbs in our hosts' vegetable garden, which also came in handy when cooking.
Liked least: The tranquility was priceless, but the 7km drive to the supermarked, was a little long. We always had to bulk shop.

Management Response

Thank you so much for all that you have said and done, we sincerely appreciate the reviews that you have written promptly and extensively. In the passed days we have often thought of you and mentioned you as we think that you are true ambassadors of your country. We admire how you manage to enjoy yourselves in the village it self, with running, mud bathing, sound recording, drawing and so on. We were greatly impressed by your own and your extended family's deep curiosity and understanding of the nature and our environment as well as by their opens and communicativeness. It was a real joy to host you and therefore we are looking forward to seeing you in the future. Our family sincerely wishes you all the best.

I stayed here more than once, each and every time I woke up in total serenity surrounded by clean air and nature. There is nobody around to disturb you because the family which runs this place owns the whole village practically. The place in which I stayed was clean with a stylish touch to it, not to mention an impressive vinyl and book collection! They have a traditional wine cellar with great wine and Mr. Stanić is a great cook. I will definitely come again, I highly recommend this place!

“Peace, tranquility and genuine hospitality in the 'real' Istria.”

The villa is a true 'home from home', with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. It has a remote location at the end of a rough track (we hired a Skoda Fabia and it just managed), attached to the owners' home. The extensive record, book and film collection in the upstairs living room provides endless pleasure, as do the pool and various covered seating areas. Our hosts (and their pets!) were delightful, even decorating the kitchen with balloons and making a cake for my birthday. The table was spread for our arrival and we were invited to a special meal on our last night, giving us the opportunity to learn about our Croatian hosts' way of life and their country's history. Very special. My only advice would be to take insect repellent for the mosquitoes. Otherwise, brew yourself a coffee, put on a record, sit on the porch with the pets and relax.
