The hotel was so clean and the staff were excellent, friendly and helpfull. The food was really nice and contained a lot of local cuisine which I liked. The only downside was the entertainment was aimed at over 50s and one duo, Matt and Sarah, were bad and on literally twice a day.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review and for the great rating. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the cleanliness of our hotel and the friendliness of our staff. Thomson Holidays is a well oiled machine. Our flight from the UK was on time and the short transfer from Pula airport smooth and efficient. The local rep was welcoming.

Check in

Check in was quick and well organized. The room was available to us as soon as we arrived which was before eleven am.

WiFi

Free, reasonably good wifi throughout – appreciated

The room

Our superior sea view room was of an adequate size. As the weather was good we spent very little time inside. We used the balcony a lot.

The bed was comfortable, air conditioning quiet and effective, TV had some UK channels, safe worked well, empty fridge was useful, small sofa, padded stool, kettle with tea and coffee. There was a large complimentary bottle of mineral water provided on day one. The wardrobe has insufficient hanging space.

The bathroom

We prefer a bath but only had a shower, a large and very good shower. Toiletries were OK, towels adequate, bathrobes provided.

BUT – we had to request soap and replacement of flannels was sporadic.

The balcony

Overlooked the pool area and has a distant seaview.

BUT – the cheap plastic furniture is uncomfortable for longer periods of reading. Noise from the bars and entertainment can be heard in the room until eleven o’clock. The sun travel across the hotel and there is always a degree of shade on the balcony.

The RFID, near field electronic keys worked well, we were on the first floor and did not use the lifts other than arrival and departure. There are four floors and the lifts seemed slow to arrive.

Rooms at the back of the hotel overlook the car park and do not get the sun.

BUT - A couple with whom we chatted were very unhappy with their room, too small and tiny shower, so we feel that we did OK.

The food

This was our first ever all inclusive holiday. We had expected poor quality food and decided to eschew the hotel and eat out if necessary. Some reviews have criticized the food at the Park Plaza. We felt that this criticism is harsh and undeserved with some exceptions.

We enjoy cooking and fine dining and consider ourselves objective about food. The Park Plaza offers a good variety of choice at each meal. Vegetarians, healthy eaters and big eaters will not go hungry. I expected a large amount of repetition from day to day but the balance of regular items and new dishes worked well. Staff will cook you a breakfast omelette to order.

Staff in the buffet restaurant are friendly and efficient, ensuring that guests have the drink of their choice immediately they choose a table. We ate outside for every meal. Most people chose the air conditioned restaurant.

BUT – the deserts are bought in and of a poor quality. We tried them a couple of times and did not finish. The orange juice served at breakfast is, to our taste, undrinkable.

The drinks

A good range of drinks is included in the package, with premium (Croatian) wines, spirits and beers available to buy. Throughout the day self service sodas, water, beer and wine is available. One reviewer complains about the mineral water in the room not being replaced – however, drinking water is available at all times. The staffed bar is also available durng most of the day.

Popular drinks included a white sparkling wine and Pan beer on tap. The dry martini hit the spot for me several times during the week.

BUT – in addition to the orange juice, the single white wine provided at the beginning of our stay was medicinal and undrinkable. The red wine was better but one glass was enough (and one glass is never enough). We mentioned this to the Thomson’s rep, who confirmed that we were not alone in disliking the white wine and promised us that it had been replaced. The new wine was much better and improved the holiday immensely.

Some fellow guests were grumbling that 11pm is too early to stop serving drinks.

The Staff

With the exception of the pool attendants the staff were polite, helpful and friendly.

The pool

The pool is a salt water pool which didn’t seem to be as popular as fresh water. It was not heavily used. There is a smaller pool which might be fresh water, we did not try it. It is a large pool area and many people seemed to spend all day, every day sitting around the pool. There are also some grassed garden areas where bikini tops seemed optional.

BUT (I shout) – THERE ARE INSUFFICIENT SUN LOUNGERS AND PARASOLS. My biggest gripe of the trip was that fellow guests reserved loungers from as early as seven am. All loungers were reserved with towels by ten am. If one did not join this ritual then there was little or no chance of using a lounger until 5pm. Our routine tends to be a morning walk or trip out, returning in late morning or early afternoon to relax and read r swim. This meant that we were restricted to using the balcony.

Typically 70% of loungers are empty, but reserved, at any one time, with their ‘owners’ elsewhere. This alone is enough to put me off this type of holiday. In better hotels around the world the pool area is better managed and towels removed from beds not occupied for an hour or so.

We complained to the pool staff, who advised us to use the beach, and the Thomson’s rep – who sympathized but was powerless, it seems, to effect change.

The location

The Park Plaza sits within a fenced compound with a short stroll across grass to the beach and seafront. The beach and seafront are very busy and very popular with tourists and locals. Several nearby camping sites mean that the resort is successful, busy and very ‘kiss me quick’. We liked the atmosphere, frantic and fun with everyone having a great time. Plenty of seaside shops, great Italian Gelato available, cafes, bars and restaurants galore – but we were all inclusive.

The beaches in Croatia are rocky and pebbly so everyone uses plastic shoes, inflatable beds or beach cushions. The water looked clean and inviting – but not inviting enough to get me in.

From the hotel there are plenty of places to stroll. The water’s edge in either direction, the old town, a large pond with large terrapins, the small peninsula of Vizula which has the ruins of a once splendid Roman Villa and quiet shady waterside footpaths. For the more active there are jet skis, quad bike, cycle and scooter hire and boat rental.

Maybe hire a car and explore further afield. We took the public bus to Pula, signposted as 8Km but much further on the bus route - which meanders. The buses are crowded and we stood all the way there and back. Should have taken a cab. Pula is interesting for its amphitheatre, but little else.

Excursions

Thompson offers several day excursions; one which involves nine hours in a coach. We enjoyed ‘The Best of Istria’ visiting Rovinj (The Venice of Istria) the hilltop town of Groznjan and lunch at a family run farm. The day was enjoyable with not too much travelling.

Elvis the tour guide is quite memorable – full of beans.

Entertainment

The two resident hotel activity co-ordinators, one British, one local, organize some mild activities – walks, boules etc.

BUT – twice during the week a half hour of aquarobics to ear splitting music which some enjoyed but drove others from the pool area. Each to their own.

BUT – there is insufficient outside seating for the evenings.

Musicians

The resident musicians work hard. He a guitarist, she a warbler. Music from the sixties and seventies. Seemed popular.

BUT - was our scene in the sixties and seventies, not our scene now.

Spa

There is a spa. Not our scene.

Gym

There is a gym. Not our scene

Clientele

Couples, mostly older but some youngsters. Mainly tattooed. Some smokers. Predominantly British in the hotel. Predominantly German in the resort.

Weather

Splendid during the whole week. 29/30 degrees.

BUT – the previous week had seen torrential rain.

Risky

I was surprised that the entertainment staff and maintenance staff used mains voltage equipment at the edge of the swimming pool whilst it was in use.

Overall

Good value for money. No WOW factor. OK for an extra holiday in the year. Couldn’t do more than a week.

There are many reviews of this Hotel, mostly giving good ratings,a few small niggles from some reviewers but overall,it is very good.We can only comment on how we found it.We travelled with 2 friends to celebrate a Birthday and to chill out.We wanted sun, pool, sun, read some books,sun,relaxed/wind down holiday and of course, some sun.Did we get it?,yes we did.We were there for 10 nights and lost 1.5 to bad weather.Considering we were in the Northern Adriatic, just over 2 hours flying time from Birmingham, that was acceptable.Temperatures were between 25-30C.There are varied age groups at this hotel, tending more to the older traveller i suppose but at a couples hotel, you will have a mix of young people(with no children yet) or older people (where the children have grown up). There were plenty of trips, car hire and local transport for those who wanted to explore. We went to Pula one day on the local 1130 bus, wow, wish we had gone by Taxi.It was standing room only when we got on to the bus.At every stop, there was a long delay as more locals got on.In the end it was jammed full,as bad as,if not worse than, the Londone Tube during rush hour.NOW a summary of the hotel (no particular order).Hotel transfer time =25 mins.reception=met with cold fruit kebabs, chilled drinks.registration, lifts(too small for size of hotel)Room=exceptionally clean, well laid out, cool, good A/C(goes off during the time your balcony door is open)safe(NO CHARGE).Wardrobes X 2,certainly adequate for our 10 night stay but could do with a few more hangers.other facilities include a TV,good hairdryer,kettle,tea/coffee,showergel.shampoo,mouthwash,lotions,dressing gowns and slippers provided.NB-Water IS SAFE to drink, you dont need bottled water.Small Gym on ground floor.Pool-1.5 Mtrs deep and is saltwater.Sunbeds=,3 choices.2 types around the pool, of fixed and adjustable beds. The 3rd choice,by far the best, was on the lawns.10 cm high, wooden frame, double matress, towelling cover,2 pillows and a parasol.(Though there are notices to the contrary, towels do appear on the sunbeds very early.Hotel staff=Superb.Their enthusiasm and obvious pride in welcoming their guests and ensuring they have an enjoyable stay,is second to none.To me Croatia feels "fresh",natural and not forced, like most of the more established Meditteranean resorts. All of the staff were very good but because we had the most contact with them,we would like to thank Annabella,Goran and Javenka in the restaurant.NB,Hotel point, the outside seating area of the main restaurant,is cloth covered. It would be better if it were weatherproof,so that guests could sit outside during light showers.Customer service=We pre-informed the Hotel that one of our friends was celebrating a Birthday during our visit.Result,on arrival in their room, they were met by a pair of towelling swans, flowers and a Birthday cake. They also recieved a cake on the actual Birthday-Well done, that is customer care.Local area=200M from pebble/rocky beach close to a Marina, which has a resident funfair, bars.shops and food outlets.Popular with locals and can be a bit noisy, especially at weekends (but not so noisy if you want to go and join in).Overall, did we get what we wanted?yes, did we enjoy it?yes.Did we get value for money?yes.Would we revisit?hopefully yes, after we been to some of the locations on our "bucket list" of holidays.Final point= Dress code. There have been a few comments on this subject. My feelings are, directed to men(ladies tend to dress smartly most of the time),that in the A la carte it should be long trousers, smart casual. The main restaurant should be long trousers OR smart dress shorts.Tshirts, swimming gear, flip flops should only be worn at poolside/sunbathing areas, not in the hotel's eating facilities.

Room Tip: We were in room 344,on the side of the hotel, facing the Marina. After we had left the pool area, beca...

Just returned from 2 FANTASTIC weeks here, would love to return again.
First the 2 small negative points; The Thomson brochure, our travel agent, the reps at the welcome meeting and a notice at the dining room entrance state that the dress code was long trousers for men and smart casual clothing. Smart is subjective, what I think is scruffy others may think is smart. However management let customers with shorts in every day. Admittedly some men in shorts looked a lot smarter that some who did wear long trousers, but please if you have a rule enforce it. Secondly the hanging space in the wardrobe is not very long and dresses would not hang correctly.
The plus points; and there are so many I could go on and on.
Staff; probably the hotels best asset, clean, smartly turned out and always cheerful and helpful. They could not do enough for you, everyone from the pool lads, cleaners, restaurant staff and bar staff were great.
Food; always a good selection, breakfast had everything from full English (no one does sausage like us though!) fruit, omelettes; well anything you could want really. Tea/coffee and juices brought to your table.
Lunch and dinner provided a good selection, always a good fresh salad bar, pizza and selection of hot and cold meats and veg. As with all meals there was a selection of fruits and cakes for desert. At dinner there was a chef carving a roast meat for you, they also did Croatian lamb and other local foods. On Friday there seemed to be a large selection of fish dishes including mussels.
Drinks; beer, red wine and sparkling wine were very pleasant. The bar provided drinks from 7am - 11pm. There is also 2 self serve drinks areas where you can get soft drinks, coffee tea, beer or wine in plastic glasses for use by the pool.
The rooms; we had a 3rd floor sea view. Small but more than adequate. View over the pool, the local park and then the sea. The balcony was a good size but did not get much sun.
The pool; salt water, not too deep with proper steps going in for those less confident in the water.
The entertainment; the resident band provided a good background, incoming entertainment included a local band and local dancers.
The reps; the 2 entertainment reps tried to provide a variety of day time activites, boules, skittles, aquagym etc but to be honest did not appear over enthusiastic themselves.
Trips; we made our own way to Pula, nice and easy on public transport. We also did the Best of Istria, worthwhile and went to Lake Bled; not to be missed. Hope whichever trip you go on Elivs (yes that is his name, life aint easy for a boy named Elvis)
Locally there are a few camp sites, (one a nudist site - turn left when you go out the back gates) and near the small but pleasant marina a good selection of bars, touristy type shops and ice cream bars. A very vibrant place in the evenings where there is a small market selling local goods. Even as a couple in their 50's we found it a nice place to enjoy either a quiet or more lively drink at night. Not too badly priced either.

We would certainly go back here again.

Room Tip: Ask and pay for a sea view on an upper floor

We spent two weeks there in July 2014 and I have only positive points to make. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms modern and generous in size overlooking the wooded area at the side of the hotel and generally very quiet.. The choice of food was varied enough to eat a different meal each day. There was a wide range of drinks available and a menu showing those that had to be paid for (high star cognacs and malt whiskies).
The staff were friendly, helpful and very hard working. The Thomson reps were a mine of information about Istria and there was a wide range of organised sightseeing trips available. The evening entertainment consisted mainly of live groups playing lounge music, with some quizzes and a little local dancing. For us, the entertainment highlight occurred on Mondays when the excellent "Night Fever" raised the roof.
If you fancy a change from the hotel, the resort of Medulin has many bars and restaurants that are very reasonably priced (approximately half the price of the resorts on the Greek Islands we have visited). The main Istrian city of Pula is only a 30 minute bus ride away or 15 minutes in a taxi (approximate cost is £12).
Flights and transfers were all on time. The flight just over two hours and transfer only 30 minutes. An excellent experience and great value for the money (£1075 p/p)

Room Tip: Those with a sea view will be much more noisy than those without as all entertainment takes place at...

Positives : 1) AMAZING food offer. Don't bother with an a la carte restaurant visit (it's poor) : the buffet is a lot better and the service (especially from the lovely Goran), excellent. I never ate the same thing over the course of a week and it was all delicious! 2) Thomson trips were very good value, particularly The Best of Istria trip (we loved Rovinj!) and, although a long day and a long journey,we loved our day in the beautiful Venice. Local guides on both trips were incredibly informative and we would also recommend taking the local bus into Pula for some sightseeing. 3) I personally enjoyed my 11am 'classes' : water aerobics, Pilates, yoga, body stretch : all good, thank you, ladies!
NEGATIVES: 1) This is an adults (over 18s) hotel, NOT a couples hotel. Romance was scoffed at in the welcome meeting ('after all, we realise you are not all here in couples'!?!?!?) and all the things we have come to expect in a thomson couples hotel did not materialise. It is made blatantly clear in the brochure and on signs that men should wear trousers in the evening, but this was not enforced. For us, changing for dinner and lingering over an excellent meal is something we love and have come to expect from our manifold previous Couples / Gold and Platinum experiences. I do not expect, given the branding, marketing and 4 star rating, to sit, dressed for dinner, next to another couple in sports shorts and union jack vest tee shirts, showing no regard for the dress code they must have been aware of when they booked. This was not helped by the fact the rep's boyfriend also resorted to shorts after 2 days. Come on, Thomson! Either impose a dress code or don't advertise you have one. That way, I can choose my kind of holiday and those who wish for a more relaxed dress code can choose their's. 2) it was the first and last time we go all inclusive. The white wine was very rough : I refused to drink the darker one, but the paler one is drinkable in small doses and the sparkling is ok. The soft drinks were sickly and syrupy one minute and very watered down the next. I stuck to water. The cocktails were delivered with no panache and served in a tumbler like orange juice, but the coffee (latte and capuchino) served at the bar in proper cups (not in the serve yourself plastic cups) was very nice and recommended. 3) sorry, I disagree with previous reviews. In August, this is NOT a peaceful location. medulin is lovely by day, but a family / teenage / club 18-30 resort by night, with a large funfair, tat shops, pumping music from bars, and a pole dancing club. Have a walk in one night and if it's your scene, you've chosen the right hotel. If not, opt for the nicer old town or cocktails on the quieter beachfront opposite the hotel (just £4 approx for a wonderful cocktail and nicer ambience). We were awoken at midnight on our last night by loud music from one of the bars and unable to sleep till it finally stopped at 2am. Not quite the 'peaceful' location promsed in the brochure! 4) the fourth floor rooms are tiny. We paid extra for a sea view, which was lovely and we had a MASSIVE balcony, BUT beware the bats nesting in the roof! After one landed on my head on night 5, I refused to sit out there after dark. Ask to move if you are given floor 4, unless you like lots of bats flying over you of course....
In conclusion, this is a lovely, clean, efficient hotel, serving great food and with delightful staff. Thomson simply needs to rebrand it and not make claims it does not deliver. We had an enjoyable stay, but it was not what we booked or expected. We will not be staying Thomson Couples again on the basis of this and will stick to half board in future.

Room Tip: Opt for a sea view, but not on the 4th floor (tiny rooms and loads of bats on balcony at night

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your candid review and for choosing us for your holidays. Knowing that apart some negatives you had a lovely holiday it’s a big pleasure. Please note that our hotel is adults only, but the Thomson concept is adults only, couples hotel. As per the white wine, we already changed our supplier due to some negative feedback we received from our valuable guests. We hope you will give us another opportunity to serve you in the future for an even more memorable experience!

Just back from a week long holiday and already wish we could return. After reading mixed reviews on here I'm glad to say that all of the good things that have been written are true and that some of the negative points made are mostly unfounded. It was a very quick transfer from the airport, about twenty minutes, and we were greeted by the staff with fresh fruit and juice drinks. We were given a room on the third floor that over looked the car park but couldn't really see the cars thanks to the large pine trees, very quiet room. We were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room, enormous bed, tea and coffee making facilities, two large wardrobes, flat screen TV, fridge and shelf space. I don't understand why other reviewers have complained about lack of drawer space, plenty of shelf space within the cupboard and wardrobe. The bathroom was of a good size, clean, lots of free toiletries that were topped up daily and an enormous walk in shower with more jets than we knew what do with! Slippers and bath robes were also in the cupboard which was a nice touch. Good air conditioning and free safe.
The salt water pool was very cold but that was nice as some days it got very hot and was a welcome relief. Lots of sun loungers around the pool and day beds in the gardens, some did get reserved but we never had a problem finding one. Most people went down to the pool early as we did and stayed there all day apart from going in to eat.
The food was lovely and varied daily, don't think I ate the same thing twice but happily would have as it was delicious. There was a huge choice every mealtime of both hot and cold food and no restrictions on how much you wanted. The potatoes and meat dishes were my favourite, well done chefs! Ate in the a la carte restaurant one night, food was lovely but actually no better than what was on offer in the restaurant, just brought to you by the waiting staff.
Lots of people have moaned about the alcohol and I find it rather sad that this is a major point for people when they go on holiday. The lager was nice and very refreshing on the hot sunny afternoons. I didn't try the white wine so can't comment but the sparkling wine and the red wine were both very nice. The bar does shut promptly at 11pm but there isn't a problem with you getting extra drinks before it closes and taking them to your room or staying in the lounge areas. Free WIFI everywhere in the hotel. The long trousers rule in the restaurant isn't imposed in the evenings and I didn't really see a problem with the longer, smarter shorts that some men wore.
The staff were the thing that really made this holiday special for us, they were all friendly, helpful and happy. They really couldn't do enough for us and that's all of them, the cleaners, the waiting staff, reception and the guys around the pool, thank you!
We took the local bus one day in to Pula and utilised the coach to Ravinj on the twice weekly trip from the hotel, both worth a visit.
The beaches aren't really beaches in Medulin, very pebbly but the sea is beautiful and clear. The harbour is very pretty for an evening walk as are the little side streets away from the centre and up towards the church.
The evening's entertainment wasn't really our thing but we were happy chatting to other couples and going out walking, other people seemed to really enjoy it though.
We loved our holiday and would go back to this hotel without a second thought, thanks to you all at Park Plaza!
