Firstly, here are some basics from arriving at Dubrovnik that I researched as I could not find via traveller forums. From the airport, you have two options to get to Dubrovnik; 1) a taxi that costs around £30 or 2) the much cheaper option of the 'Atlas' bus that comes as soon as the last one leaves outside the airport for a bargain £4 or so per person. The bus stops at the main old town (first stop) and then onto the ferry terminal (second stop) and takes around 30m. Nice journey as it goes along the coast. At the ferry terminal in Dubrovnik, there is the Jadrolinija ticket office that you buy your tickets from to get on the ferry for Lopud. You need to check ferry times as they change all the time and pretty infrequent. The ferry to Lopud takes about an hour but the journey is lovely. We actually only went to explore Dubrovnik for one day from Lopud and it was really nice but very busy with loads of tourist groups!
When you get off the ferry at Lopud, it's a 10m walk to the hotel at the other end of the seaside strip (where pretty much everything is on Lopud). We rang the hotel and they collected us (eventually!) in a little golf buggy. So, onto the hotel. As per many of the reviews, the hotel is generally very good and feels like a good four star. Clean, modern, A/C everywhere, friendly staff, nice rooms, balconies with views etc. The pool area is also really plush with an option to sit next to the pool or down by the sea. Drinks in the hotel are similar to standard UK pub (not hotel) prices i.e. £3 for beer, £2 for coke etc. The hotel's wifi is OK at best but tempromental and pretty slow. Don't go here if you need great wifi but remember you are on a pretty remote island! So generally, great hotel.
And so to the food. Breakfast is an OK buffet affair. Nothing special. Standard and quite European i.e. lots of cheese, ham, odd small sausages etc. Not a patch on a five star hotel but acceptable. The main issue is the restaurant food on the evenings if staying half-board like we were. Although the menu will look appealing (aside from the fact that it's printed on a poor piece of plain A4!) e.g. shrimps, monkfish, duck breast etc, the delivery really lets the whole thing down. Clearly they are cooking for numbers so everything is bland, overcooked and generally average. Don't get me wrong, it's not disgusting, but just really lets the whole place and experience down, which is why we ended up eating pizza most nights at Elephas down the road (pizza for £5 and amazing!! The salad buffet is OK but same/same every night. And you'll be in for a treat if you like sponge cakes as that is all the desserts are, albeit 10 options! We ate five nights and only one night did either the wife or I finish a starter or main. If only this hotel focused on quality and not quantity, this place would be so much better. Service and decor etc are fine, it's just the dull food.
Like most hotelliers, they probably see this trip advisor review and others as harsh criticism. It's not, it's feedback. When I told the hotel receptionist about the food, she laughed it off with a 'I know your pain' smile. So if 'you know' Lafodia, why not do something about it?! It is a genuinely lovely hotel to relax/chill and but for the food, we would return as the views and place are stunning. But with limited other options on the island (pizza and fish aside) and Dubrovnik a good 2-3 hour return journey, we probably would not go back. What a shame.
