“Lovely but so let down by the restaurant food...”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

Firstly, here are some basics from arriving at Dubrovnik that I researched as I could not find via traveller forums. From the airport, you have two options to get to Dubrovnik; 1) a taxi that costs around £30 or 2) the much cheaper option of the 'Atlas' bus that comes as soon as the last one leaves outside the airport for a bargain £4 or so per person. The bus stops at the main old town (first stop) and then onto the ferry terminal (second stop) and takes around 30m. Nice journey as it goes along the coast. At the ferry terminal in Dubrovnik, there is the Jadrolinija ticket office that you buy your tickets from to get on the ferry for Lopud. You need to check ferry times as they change all the time and pretty infrequent. The ferry to Lopud takes about an hour but the journey is lovely. We actually only went to explore Dubrovnik for one day from Lopud and it was really nice but very busy with loads of tourist groups!

When you get off the ferry at Lopud, it's a 10m walk to the hotel at the other end of the seaside strip (where pretty much everything is on Lopud). We rang the hotel and they collected us (eventually!) in a little golf buggy. So, onto the hotel. As per many of the reviews, the hotel is generally very good and feels like a good four star. Clean, modern, A/C everywhere, friendly staff, nice rooms, balconies with views etc. The pool area is also really plush with an option to sit next to the pool or down by the sea. Drinks in the hotel are similar to standard UK pub (not hotel) prices i.e. £3 for beer, £2 for coke etc. The hotel's wifi is OK at best but tempromental and pretty slow. Don't go here if you need great wifi but remember you are on a pretty remote island! So generally, great hotel.

And so to the food. Breakfast is an OK buffet affair. Nothing special. Standard and quite European i.e. lots of cheese, ham, odd small sausages etc. Not a patch on a five star hotel but acceptable. The main issue is the restaurant food on the evenings if staying half-board like we were. Although the menu will look appealing (aside from the fact that it's printed on a poor piece of plain A4!) e.g. shrimps, monkfish, duck breast etc, the delivery really lets the whole thing down. Clearly they are cooking for numbers so everything is bland, overcooked and generally average. Don't get me wrong, it's not disgusting, but just really lets the whole place and experience down, which is why we ended up eating pizza most nights at Elephas down the road (pizza for £5 and amazing!! The salad buffet is OK but same/same every night. And you'll be in for a treat if you like sponge cakes as that is all the desserts are, albeit 10 options! We ate five nights and only one night did either the wife or I finish a starter or main. If only this hotel focused on quality and not quantity, this place would be so much better. Service and decor etc are fine, it's just the dull food.

Like most hotelliers, they probably see this trip advisor review and others as harsh criticism. It's not, it's feedback. When I told the hotel receptionist about the food, she laughed it off with a 'I know your pain' smile. So if 'you know' Lafodia, why not do something about it?! It is a genuinely lovely hotel to relax/chill and but for the food, we would return as the views and place are stunning. But with limited other options on the island (pizza and fish aside) and Dubrovnik a good 2-3 hour return journey, we probably would not go back. What a shame.

Great location in Lopud bay, just ten mins walk from the ferry drop off point, or you can get a lift from the hotel golf buggy! Great room, friendly staff too. Breakfast was lovely, but you do need to get there early to avoid missing out on pastries. Would recommend and stay again.

Really great peaceful and relaxing holiday. Brilliant hotel with really helpful staff. Very clean and modern rooms and hotel. We stayed in room 760....great view of the side gardens and small beach. The hotel entertaining is poor to be honest, so spent most evenings in the local bars of which they can be counted on one hand. Its generally cheap.....3 pints of local beer and a glass of wne was less than a mario lanzo.
The seai super clear. The pool was a salt water pool but quiet on the cold side as it was early june. We had only a couple of hours rain so spent that day in old town dubrovnik which was really good....even found an irish bar with draught Guinness (Yum yum).
So if you are looking for a couple holiday, with a romantic quiet setting then this is the one.
You won't be dissapointed. Enjoy.

Room Tip: If you want sun in the morning on your balcony, book the east tower, or west for sunset. Room 760 is...

We stayed in the hotel from 25.05.12 till 05.06.12.

The hotel and his location is really wonderfull. Beautiful room, bathroom, balcony, ....
The garden is well managed and deserves 5 stars for it.
A big plus for the staff who tries to do as much as possible for their guests. The staff members come from Croatia and are very friendly and the best.
Big thanks to Marco and Robert from the bar at the swimming pool.

The hotel is sadly not Croation at all.
The management is Italian and that shows.
Whatever information you give for example to the manager of the restaurant, is denied.

Breakfast : eggs and sausages, bacon, etc. always low of heat. It is extremely important that eggs should be served very hot (salmonella, .....). Why not do the eggs à la minute ?
Manager : problem with the bain maries (?) - every day ?
Always white bread at the buffet.
Pepper and salt at the table : not possible, it is not the Italian style (explanation of the restaurant manager).

Dinner : every day pasta, pasta, pasta, pasta, risotto (when a good cook tastes this risotto, he'll have to close his restaurant in Belgium).
Dinner was served à la carte and was more than once cold.
Gnocci with shrimps were homemade (?). One shrimp was found in the gnocci.
Puree of potatos : powder mixed with water.
Desserts : only, sometime havy, cakes.
Etc.......

We as Belgians, love to eat many different things from all over the world, but if the restaurant of the hotel states that it is "The best Italian restaurant in Croatia", it should furfill our expectations, and it didn't.
Inspite of this wonderful hotel, location, staff, ect. this hotel with Italian management should be better removed to Italy.
We come to Croatia to taste its warmth, hospitality and above all their wonderful Croatian cuisine.

Sorry, next year we will look for a real Croation hotel.

PS : in our brochure from Thomas Cook there was no mentioning of Italian cuisine, nor dinner à la carte.
Inside information stated that in April 43 % was not happy with the food, in May 51 % and the hotel is only open 2 months !

We just returned back from 8 days at the Lafodia with our family, 2 children, 4 1/2 and 10 months.
I will start with the positives, beautiful hotel, very clean and the grounds were stunning. The Croatian staff were exceptional, super friendly and very helpful. The family suites were a great size, plenty of room. One strange thing, they supplied coffee in the rooms but no milk or Creme.
If you have children there is no grocery store, so if you need Nappies or wipes or baby food, you have to go into Dubrovnik, which is a hike on the ferry(1 hour journey and only runs at limited times). Well you can buy Nappies and wipes at the hotel but it's a fortune, wipes were 4 pounds a pack, ouch!!
Local restaurants were average, The Obala was great but very pricey! Octopus amazing! Kids lived on pizza and pasta the whole trip.
Ok as for the negatives,Uggg!
-Not suitable at all for kids yet(shame as we were sold the package as it being kid friendly) no kids food(disaster, i had to give the kitchen a list of kids food) no menu, kids clubs was available but only had coloring and puzzles, the guys who ran it were lovely. Kids pool and kids area just opened, has a beautiful view but average, super clean but pools were very deep so if you have young children be careful. No entertainment for kids in the evening at all! The staff was super friendly to the kids but could not really provide anything much for them to do and nothing on the island to do except beach. The sandy beach is a hike but a nice walk but very hilly, you can take a local golf cart taxi but it cost 20 Croatian kunas per person.
Ok now for the food, wow, disappointing, they started doing ala cart which for families is not great, the same sort of things on the menu every night, pasta, risotto, fish. They had a buffet for starters, yuck, grilled veges(same kind every night), salad bar, sometimes just lettuce and tomatoes, dessert was the same kind of cake every night, no fresh fruit, and you had to buy coffee separate.
The wait staff were all nice except for one female, wow, just not happy or accommodating.
There is way to much to say about the food and so many things they could do better!
Some do not recommend for families especially if you need things for your kids to do!

Room Tip: If you want a larger room choose the family room, superb!

This is a beautiful hotel. Very impressive to look at and in a fantastic location. The rooms are very high tech and carefully thought out. Everything is clean and pristine.

However the dining room, whilst again clean and pristine has too few waiters who are trying to look after guests giving them individual attention. On two occasions we had to wait over an hour for our main course. Many guests complained.
Although this is supposed to be a vehicle free island we were disturbed constantly in the West Tower by construction vehicles up and down the track to the top of the hotel. It was not a peaceful room at all.

The manager decided to hold a private party towards the end of our visit and closed off half of the bar area which incidentally his guests did not use - since we were paying guests we were all very displeased.

Overall it is a gorgeous hotel in a fantastic location and we would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool on a high floor in the West Tower gives a really good view of the harbour and g...
