“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

We stayed at the Kona Tiki during the Ironman to watch my sister compete. The Managers, Jan and Mike were very hospitable and made us feel so at home for the entire stay - even standing out front with us to watch the race and cheering as other Kona Tiki Ironmen and women competed. Jan and Mike were also very accommodating towards our family (we have a 3 and 1yr old) and at no time did we feel unwelcome because of our kids (who were noisy at times). In fact, there was a real openness amongst guests which made for a friendly, personalised and relaxed atmosphere. Rooms are simple yet very clean and homely. Breakfast each morning was a delight. A simple breakie of bagels, toast, fruit, tea, coffee and juice but impeccably presented and overlooking the pool and beautiful ocean. All rooms are ocean facing. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks can be a little loud for light sleepers but I'd rather that than traffic! My family stayed at the Royal Kona and, having visited their rooms, I was very pleased we had chosen the Kona Tiki. I will definitely book here again.

Room Tip: No restaurant as such - just continental breakfast No children's activities but Jan and Mike al...

One of my abiding memories of Hawaii is of time spent sitting out on the Lanai of this hotel, listening to the surf booming below with perfect sunlight illuminating tropical fish in the clear water. The room was spacious and simple, and the small kitchen was a pleasant addition, but you'll remember this place for the view and the proximity to the sea, as well as the laid back and friendly service provided by the staff, including beach towel and snorkel gear use. Breakfast was simple but excellent, and there was no disappointing aspect of the stay.

This place is a refreshing throw-back to what resorts in Florida and Hawaii were back in the late 60's and early 70's versus the mega-resorts of today. The location is great for touring the Kona coast, though we used it for home base to tour the entire island this year. One side of the pool is actually adjoining the sea wall. Was pretty cool to get sprayed by salt water from the breakers while floating in the fresh water pool. We stayed in the 3d floor studio Room 305. It was nice enough and the views from the lenai were outstanding. It took a couple of nights to get used to the roaring surf crash though. By night 4 we were used to it.

Views from the Kona Tiki Hotel is very breathtaking...Plenty of dolphins a beautiful sunsets everyday. Lodging was minimalistic (No TV, radio), but the fresh opihi off the rock wall made up for it. Staff, Jan & Mike, were very accommodating since the first phone call, they made us feel right at home. They provided fruit and bagel/english muffins daily. Can't beat the view of the ocean splashing into the pool daily. Hotel provides ice, coolers, boogie boards, snorkel gear, lawn chairs, beach towels, BBQ's, etc. The staff assigned us to light the tiki torches and blow the conch at sunset which made my birthday weekend very special. We would definitely come back to this Hotel.

Room Tip: 2nd & 3rd floor provides more privacy as the 1st floor patios are accessible to anyone.

No TV, No Telephone, but a third floor kitchenette is better than home, look down at the fish in the water, hear the surf so loud it might be hard to sleep, listen to the birds, feel the lovely ocean breeze.... This place is not fancy, but it is wonderful! The managers are awesome, friendly, helpful and you they make you breakfast every morning .... We think this place is THE BEST. No wonder peope keep coming back. We will come back!!!!

One of the oldest hotels on the Big Island and one of the best. This hotel is quite literally ‘on the sea’. We stayed in a kitchenette and the room spelled comfort and warmth and the best part was undeniably the view of the ocean. We could see all kinds of bright colourful fishes right from our Lanai and the icing on the cake – we spotted a MANTA RAY as well. How cool is that! There were times when we simply did not want to leave the hotel because we had such a peaceful time looking out into the ocean and hearing the sound of the waves crashing against the walls. The sound of waves at night is loud yes, but it’s a pleasant noise the kind that lulls you to sleep. Jan & Mike are the most friendly and amiable hosts you could ask for. I hated leaving the place and I swear I had tears when it was time to bid Goodbye. That should speak volumes as to how much I loved the place.

If ever I’m in Hawaii again (and I’m hoping so since I got to light the Tiki torch at sundown there ), hands down Kona Tiki you will be my one and only choice for a stay on the island. Thank you for such a memorable time. Jan & Mike you rock :-)

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing. The kitchenette's are a good choice.

Yes this place is not five star luxury but It does not need to be. This place is great value has tonnes of character and the staff were amazing. The breakfast was limited but did the job. The room was comfortable enough. We stayed 3 nights and this hotel was perfect for that. Great views, I loved being so close to the ocean. The staff were so friendly and helpful. If you are exploring the island you can't go wrong with this hotel.
