“Stunning views”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

Arrived earlier than check in so waited at the Don the Beachcomer bar which is just fantastic. The views and drinks made me feel instantly on holiday. This is the original home of the Mai Tai so be sure to have a few here. The staff are very friendly and there is an Expedia travel agent desk so you can book day tours and cars. There is a pool and also a natural lagoon area which is great for kids and to laze about when soaking up some sun. The location of this resort is also a great feature, you can walk into the main areas of the town making it easy to eat out at the local restaurants/ bars.

Room Tip: I had a junior suite with an ocean view. The wrap around balcony and separate living area was great...

We stayed at Royal Kona for 5 nights mid March. We had a partial ocean view room on 1st floor which was ok. Our room was clean and comfortable but would like an full ocean view next time in the Lagoon tower overlooking the Lagoon (quieter rooms on this side).

Enjoyed the Happy Hour at Don's Mai Tai bar and would recommend the Pina Colada's. The food was also enjoyable and the staff very friendly.
Great location to the many restuarants, bars and shops all within walking distance.
Overall yes the hotel does need a bit of a facelift but we enjoyed being at the quiet end of Kona.
Would recommend to anyone who wants a quiet holiday and we will be back there for sure.

Room Tip: Always ask for a higher floor and not one in the Lagoon tower facing the Luau (can be noisy).

Aloha! Great to see another satisfied guest from Down Under. So glad they found the rooms comfortable and the food and beverage tops as well. It's true our rooms are not the newest on the block, but we strive to ensure they are clean and well maintained. Remember we don't charge Resort Fees, which most of our competitors do, we pride ourselves on being the best value for location in Kona, hands down. Glad they stayed and had a nice time, I hope they had an amazing time on the Big Island. Warmest Mahalo!

Spent 3 nights here in an oceanfront room in the Lagoon Tower on the 3rd floor. After reading some of the reviews regarding the age of the resort I wasn't sure what to expect. Yes it is an older resort but has aged gracefully and doesn't look old or shabby. The room was spotless and had everything we needed, good shower, comfortable bed, flat screen TV, coffeemaker, fridge etc. The ocean sunset views are great and the surrounding tropical gardens are beautiful. We ate in the bar twice and the meals were good and reasonably priced. The location is perfect being a short stroll from shops and restaurants. Overall the resort exceeded our expectations and represented excellent value. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Room Tip: I would stay in the Lagoon Tower again.

Aloha TA family, so great to see these guests from down under found our resort to be the great value it is. Awesome location, great views, food, service. True we're not the newest kid on the block, but we're clean, well maintained and you cannot find a better bargain for what we offer. Not to mention the dolphins in the bay, the turtles in the lagoon, and the complimentary nightly sunsets! LOL glad we over delivered for them, hope to see them again soon.

We stayed at Royal Kona for 3 nights at the end of March. We had a package that included room, rental car, and breakfast. Overall, great place and would stay there again as we enjoyed our stay.

The pluses:
Great location
Fantastic breakfast in the morning
Restaurant had awesome food in the evening as well
Great on site bar
Friendly staff
Fantastic views of the ocean

The minuses:
The exterior of the building does indeed need a facelift
The bed wasn't that comfortable. Very hard and stiff.
Carpet needs replaced

Room Tip: Splurge and get the ocean facing view.

Aloha TA team, glad these guests shared the awesome things they enjoyed. Yes, we have the best location, great food, great staff, and do offer the best value in Kona. We're working daily to improve the grounds and exterior, as well as constantly changing beds, and working to change our carpets in the exterior buildings. Again, glad they shared, hope they loved Hawaii, and please know, we're working to make our resort the best!

It is heart wrenching to write this. But how can an establishment improve unless they are informed and how can the consumer make the right decision about things without good information so they can make an informed decision to get good value for their hard earned money. We had stayed at the Royal Kona before and it was so great, but this time, it was heartbreaking. The staff grumpy, the rooms smelly, not very clean, and the management less than interested in their guests. We asked to speak with the manager a couple of times and was always told, they are out, they are in a meeting, they are unavailable. Seriously??? What it really felt like was that the management was not caring enough to let us speak with them. I even doubt that the front desk staff even informed the management we wish to speak with them sometimes, because how can management blow off people so much if they REALLY care about their hotel. The place has lost it's charm... that is for sure. We won't be returning there. So sorry to see how this place has gone down hill. Bye, bye RKR.

We stayed here one night as our condo was not available for the last night that we were in Hawaii. The staff was cordial and helpful. The resort itself~public areas, elevators, courtyards, rooms~all in desperate need of an update.

Our condo cost less per night and we had more space, privacy and amenities. Cannot recommend it.

Aloha TA family, sorry they feel they cannot recommend us, that's too bad. I'm glad they had a nice time in their condo. Our guest prefer to eat out, and have someone clean their rooms while they are on vacation. Different strokes for different folks, I hope they were able to watch the dolphins in the bay in front of the hotel, or sip a famous Mai tai at the bar, I truly hope they had an awesome time on the Big Island, the best island in the chain..

We liked the location of the Royal Kona along the strip and the oceanview/ocean front room. We had a corner room on the 7th floor. Unfortunately the smoke from the daily luaus came up to our room each morning and the noise from the luau on the one night we spent time in the room. (That was laundry night - 4 porta-potties were stationed in the lobby of the adjoining tower, where the laundry room was located, and the wind blew those odors into that tower - icky!) Otherwise, we liked the pounding of the surf below us (sounded like the wind at home!) and a beautiful view when the luau was cleared out and after the fire got going properly in the mornings.

Room was huge, and had a sofa bed in there, plus chairs, table and the very comfortable king-sized bed. Room was very tired, though - linens, pillows, bedspread, carpet and especially the bathroom are in major need of a makeover. Amenities consisted of a bar of soap and a bottle of shampoo. Threadbare towels. Dresser needed some basic maintenance - a little sanding and paraffin was all, but it bothered me that basic things like that are neglected. Cable guy came into the room Monday during the day while we were out, and we hadn't asked about cable or internet, so I asked why mgmt had allowed someone to enter the room w/o permission. No answer, just a shrug from the manager on duty.

I asked about printing out boarding passes, was told to come back in the morning, since there was a problem with the computer. Came back in the morning, was told that they couldn't print out boarding passes, as the one computer they had dedicated to that wasn't working. But I saw the Japanese tourists getting their passes printed, from the dedicated Japanese desk.

Pool area was very, very small and they had a private lagoon, but that was closed during our stay because of high surf. Snorkeling and swimming were discouraged.

ABC Store about a block away, and lots of neat little places for breakfast and lunch nearby. Attached bar was crazy expensive by local standards, so I only bought a Perrier there.

Parking is for a fee and you have to display a pass, as well as have a card for admittance in and out of the lot. Card worked maybe 60% of the time, so we had to talk to lot attendant often. Parking lot fills early.

Aloha TA family, glad these guests shared their insight and concern.. We are definitely a hotel/resort, far from a condo. Yes, we had temporary resrt rooms in January while we renovated our bathrooms, but they were just that, temporary. Mother nature rules, if the surf is high, we close the lagoon for our guest safety, period. Our guest room amenities are modern and adequate, we're a moderate resort, if one is looking for 5 star products, they can be found at a 5 star resort. In regards to the cable repair, we were conducting maintenance, and the room was entered with a hotel staff security accompanying the cable repair man. We're open 24/7 and run high occupancy, sometimes this type of work is necessary. I hope they were able to enjoy the Big Island, sorry we weren't the perfect fit fot them, though I'm glad they shared. Mahalo!
