“Ageing but splendid”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

Yes a bit old fashioned and showing its age, but our sea view room had everything we needed including lots of space and a/c. Sitting on the balcony and watching the sea is as good as it gets. Location is perfect for the real Hawai'i experience - close to the main strip and one of the main pick up points for the various trips. Restaurant and bar are good value and all the staff we encountered were helpful and friendly - plus it has a very popular Luau.A special mention to Heather who helped plan our tours and gave us plenty of local info. And, of course, it's on Big Island - the most interesting of all the islands.

Room Tip: Sea view!!!

Aloha TA family, really great to see our guests from the UK had a wonderful stay. Glad they loved the views from their room, and enjoyed all of the special things our resort offers, from views, location, food and beverage and our great accommodating staff. Hopefully we'll see them when their travels bring them back to Kona, we'll look forward to welcoming them. Mahalo!

This hotel has a great ocean front bar and ok food, but the rooms are old and rusting. The bath had mold around the tubs edges, the sink and light switches were rusting. Musty smell is prevalent and some of the towels had holes in them and were stained. The furniture is attractive. The elevator is koa wood and beautiful. Good massage available from the spa. Koi pond, shopping, and dining on site, as well as a fitness center. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the room, get a lanai that faces the ocean for great sunsets and sunbathing. Good price, but shows its age.

Room Tip: Ask to look at rooms in your price range before you choose which to stay in.

Aloha TA family, sorry to see our guests from AZ felt our rooms were old and tired. We pride ourselves on having clean and well maintained rooms for our guests, so this is concerning. I've sent a personal message to them to find out which room they occupied so we can rectify immediately. Glad they enjoyed the rest of the resort and their stay, I hope they had a great time on the big island, glad they shared. Mahalo!

We ended up here because we (I) messed up the dates for our condo, so we needed two nights. Room was a good size with a great partial ocean view. The staff were friendly and the cocktail bar certainly worth visiting. Plenty of other restaurants within walking distance as well.

We reserved at The Royal Kona because we had stayed there before and loved it. Second visit was longer and did not disappoint. We loved the happy hour and great sunsets at the bar. The luau is excellent. I recommend corner king room. Can't wait to return

This hotel was recommended to my by a co-worker who enjoyed her stay in 2002. I ended up booking the hotel very early instead of shopping around because they had great early booking (aloha rates) and we got an ocean view room for an extremely reasonable price. There are some nice aspects to the hotel: great location, great price, decent rooms, flat screen tvs, etc. It does need some updating; it definitely has that 70s look to it, which seems pretty common among the moderately priced hotels in Hawaii. However, that being the the worst part of the hotel isn't much to complain about. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and most importantly we were well rested while staying here. The only real downfall is they do not have room service late at night and you can only get Domino's delivered (which I happen to hate). It would have been nice to be able to get food in the room after spending all day from early morning to late evening experiencing the island (a lot of swimming, hiking, snorkeling and things that wear you out), however there are some really great restaurants in walking distance and one is open late. Overall, it was a nice, typical place to stay.

Aloha TA family, great to know our guests from Ohio had a solid stay, and enjoyed everything about the resort and the big island, there is so much to see and do. Yes, our location is truly the best in Kona, everything is within walking distance, from dining, shopping, galleries, farmers market, historical sites and the pier for water activities. Really please they enjoyed their stay, we appreciate them sharing. Mahalo

From pre-contact from the GM about our stay to arrival this hotel suits us down to the ground. We were upgraded to what we think is the best room in the house in the Alii tower level 7. Massive wrap around lanai overlooking the clear waters below. Room had mini fridge, comfortable king bed, cable tv. The only negative is wifi is expensive at $10 per day, then we found out you can get free wifi at the bar below but it only worked once out of 3 days at the bar. Carparking also stings you $10 a day but it is so handy having a car on this island so you can drive to the major shops instead of waiting for the trolley which doesn't come that often. We had appetizers and cocktails at Dons Mai Tai bar a few times, service not that great at the bar our server just disappeared at one stage, however the view is amazing. Oh and the private lagoon beach was great, heaps of tropical fish and I was told turtles sometimes enter it too. We have been to Kona 3 times and this is by far the best hotel we have stayed in out of the 4 we have previously stayed at.

Room Tip: Ali tower for the best ocean views.

Aloha TA family, glad to see our guests from Down Under had a great stay, and will only be staying with us when they come to Kona. We love taking care of all our guests, especially our return guests. Wherever your travels take you, if your are not completely satisfied with your stay, be in room, view, service to name a few, I strongly suggest you contact the front desk or management so they can resolve ASAP, our goal in the hospitality industry is happy guests, period. Glad they enjoyed, loved their room, and will stay with again next year! Mahalo!

We stayed in a ocean front standard room in the lagoon tower. The lagoon tower is very tired looking, peeling paint, worn carpets, worn furnishings. Our room was the same but the amenities all worked well (good WIFI signal for a fee in room, free in bar area), the bed was comfortable and the room spacious, the bath room had a very small tub and poor lighting though. Towels are worn.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is we'll placed for shops and restaurants. It has good parking for a reasonably price. The rooms are reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Avoid the lagoon tower and opt for a deluxe room if you want a bit of luxury.

Aloha TA family, it's great to see our guests from the UK had an enjoyable stay, even though they thought the rooms were a bit tired. We truly strive to provide clean and well maintained rooms and grounds for our guests to enjoy, and although we're not the newest kid on the block, we definitely have the best views and location in Kona. Glad they had fun and shared their stay, hopefully they'll make the long flight back from the UK again soon!
