The only good thing about this hotel is the location of few of the condos that are ocean facing. I thought I will be getting a ocean facing condo as the hotel name suggests but its disguising. As I reached the hotel front desk, the clerk told me I have to pay $40 extra for ocean view condo. When I went to the condo she gave me, it was really bad in the sense the construction seems really old especially the bedroom was very dirty simply because the walls, the furniture and everything about the room was old. I think they really need to think about tearing the whole condos down and re-build from scratch because loacation is pretty good. We called the corporate office to complaint for the room and they forwarded us to the same front desk clerk. She understood finally because I felt she was a bit rude all this time and then gave us ocean facing condo, this time a two bedroom set with no extra charges at all. Again, this condo was just a ocean facing but still felt very old; they did some renovation like carpet was fairly new and some durniture items were classy but I think they need to really reconsider re-building the whole place because still kitchen cabinets, walls, doors, bathrooms and other things were just too old. Thanks !

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent visit to our property. Our property has both ocean front and ocean view units; the category description is used to describe the unit so that our guests know what they are reserving. An ocean view unit is different than an ocean front unit and we do have a higher rate for ocean front units. From our ocean front units you could toss a stone into the ocean while on your lanai. Some travelers do not understand the difference between the categories and this can create challenges from time to time. I apologize that the team member you spoke to did not properly share our Aloha Spirit, but it is good to know that we were able to meet your expectation. We have over 30 Ocean Front units and 15 Ocean View units available for booking. The building is older but well kept; we will continue to maintain the building, the grounds and work continuously with our owners to improve the interior quality of our accommodations.

Mahalo for your feedback,

Stephen Hicks

Our recent visit was on June 24 and we stayed at the ocean front room 412. We are local residents here on the Big Island and we took our two teenage boys to relax at Bali Kai. We all enjoyed our room and stay so much we extended another night. The office staff and security guy was awesome and assisted us during our stay. Thank you we will visit again soon. The only opportunity I experienced was the dishwasher was not emptied before we checked in, but that was the only oversight. Keep up the great service and awesome clean rooms, BBQ area, and the beach is awesome also. Medeiros Ohana

The property location is pretty good. The Banyans surfing area is right there. Ali'i Drive is the touristy oceanfront drive and you're on it, just in a section where it's a long walk to any real attractions like the Magic Sands Beach or the harbor where the big ships anchor. The property is getting old and individual units have their own owners who keep them up (I assume within some kind of minimum standards if they want to rent them) so I won't detail the condition of our unit except to say it was nice except the mattress should be replaced and the A/C unit was noisy. I will tell you things you can apply to all the condo units to make a choice to stay there or not.

The grounds are beautiful. They evidently spend a lot of time, effort and money to keep those nice. The beach side has nice grass and loungers and is trash free. In the condo section there are not only no elevators, but the floors do not even have a catwalk across each floor. They have staircases that serve 4 doors per floor. If you want to visit your neighbor on the same floor, you might have to go to the ground floor and go to the next staircase to get there. That makes it very difficult for housekeeping because they can't use a cart and roll from room to room for cleaning. It does make it quiet because kids won't be running in front of the rooms for very far and people won't be walking by your door often. Something we didn't know was that the condo housekeeping is almost totally extra. They will change the sheets once a week, but cleaning and trash collection is available at various levels from an "a'la carte" type price sheet you get at check in. The parking lot is well lit and was never full, but be careful. The local paper often has reports of cars in the area being broken into. Don't leave anything valuable in your car, especially if it's visible. Dining options are limited. There is a place the locals love called Da' Poke Shack which has chicken plates large enough to feed two people for a good price. Just watch the time because they close around 6PM and you'll only have the vending machine near the check in lobby.

Our stay was good and if you are going to be out a lot seeing the sights you should enjoy the place. At the end of the day we had a balcony and could enjoy a drink, see the ocean and the street with all the joggers and bikers from the third floor. The worst thing about the whole stay is that I had to carry our heavy bags up and then down from the third floor via stairs (unless you count the tsunami watch or the power outage caused by the lady backing into the building's transformer, but that's another story). Those won't happen on your stay in paradise........

Room Tip: Good views and quiet on third floor ... but no elevator for the suitcases .....

Our experience renting apartment #405 Kona Bali Kai (#3565821 on Homeaway.com and vrbo.com), directly from the owner, was positive from the outset. Dealing with the owner, Mike Gaudette, was a pleasure. He facilitated the process of the rental with professional efficiency, charm and graciousness, and provided a wealth of truly useful information about the location, activities in the vicinity and around the Big Island in general. We spent a few days in Volcano National Park before driving to Kailua Kona and checked in smoothly. The condo was really perfect in terms of its convenient location, central to all the sights and activities we wanted to take in, and being a pleasant, comfortable, charming & relaxing environment to come back to after a day of fun in the sun. We found it to be exactly as described down to the smallest detail. We loved sitting down to breakfast and dinner (we dined in almost every day) on the lanai, watching the surfers, paddlers and birds, watching and listening to the sea - just fabulous; the ocean is right there, as are the storied sunsets. We found the condo to be very comfortable & considerately well equipped to meet all our needs and then some. The kitchen contains all the means for cooking a feast, and the bathrooms were clean, with perfect functionality and even a touch of luxury (two sinks and double-head shower in the master bedroom). We were out every day swimming and hiking (including the notorious walk down and back to the Capt. Cook memorial on Kealakekua Bay). Starting out from the condo on Ali’i Drive, we were within 30 min drive from some of the best snorkeling we have enjoyed on all the islands. We were fortunate to swim with green turtles, spinner dolphins and also took the night trip to view the giant Manta rays. Just astonishing! We slept comfortably every night, lulled by the sound of the waves just below the Lanai, and cooled by the breeze, assisted by the ceiling fans, coming through the condo. This was far preferable to AC which would have required closing the doors, overcooling the space and foregoing the experience of the sounds and scents of the ocean.

We loved the Big Island on this, our first visit; we had the best time here and want to return soon. And we will certainly choose 405 Kona Bali Kai as our preferred accommodation. Mahalo, Mike and Nicole, for sharing your lovely home on the Big Island!

Upon arrival we had a choice of 3 rooms. It was hard because they were all GREAT. Leesha Jones at the desk was the most helpful person. This place was all it was on the internet. we were there for 16 Days and we wish it would of been for more. When we come back to the Big Island we will be staying here again. I can't believe its over but the best part is that we will be back and maybe it will be our home then. Checked out other places ,while there, and they didn't seem as good as this one, due get one, ocean view, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: ocean view

I upgraded to the ocean view and was happy I did. The tidal pools and the surfers made the western exposure even nicer. The sunsets were anazing. Turtles in the tidal pools were fun to watch.
The room while very dated ( as was the whole complex) was spacious.

For the price this place is amazing. No elevators though. Very comfortable and the staff is warm and friendly. I'd highly recommend getting an ocean front room. ... the waves are breathtaking. I'd book with them again for sure.
