“Just right for our family”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

We just returned from several nights in Unit 108 at Magic Sands. Our condo had been recently redone and was small, but very nice and clean. It is centrally located near kona downtown, shopping and restaurants. The condo had everything we needed and was very economical, allowing us to do some more expensive tours. Room was very quiet at night, except for the waves :) We slept with the lanai doors open, no A/C.

Magic Sands beach is right next door, but with young kids at least in April, we found it not to be a good beach for us. The pool was nice and all rooms have an ocean view. The Murphy Bed was great, the foldout was okay for the kids but way too lumpy for adults.

We stayed at the Kona Magic Sands #311 8 nights for our Anniversary. This unit is very comfortable with beautiful views of the Ocean. You can see the Yellow Tang and many other fish
from the lanai. This is a very quiet complex, the only thing you hear is the waves crashng in front which can be very loud at times but can be controled by how wide you open the lanai doors. The other residents are very friendly. We used the gas BBQ's a couple times, make sure you clean when your done. There were Boogie Boards in the unit which saved a couple dollars on rental. Great waves next door at the Beach. The lanai has bar stool height table and chairs which I really like, so you are above the railing for views, not looking through the railing like at hotels. We saw spinner dolphins go by in the mornings and a couples whales spouting off in the distance. There is a nice pool and assigned parking so your not always looking for a spot. There is no elevator so if you have bad knees choose a lower unit. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was great for making breakfast. If you like maid service or room service this isn't for you. The only thng we found that could be improved is the water pressure. Had a great experience, would recommend to anyone.

This is our second stay in Kona Magic Sands. Unit #307 have been recently redecorated and it feels clean. All the units in this block have a rather small kitchen area. The location is just perfect: a great beach a few steps outside and renovated facilities (BBQ, pool, and reserved car park). Units belong to private owners, so the quality can vary tremendously. Look around for reviews and ask the owner when the flat was last redecorated and to what exent.

The each is called Magic Sands because every year between Christmas and New Year the sand get washed away and rocks are exposed. During spring the cycle closes as waves carry new sand. If you happen to be there in summer there are a few sea turtles that like to visit the beach, they are not shy and somentimes bump into you if you stay in the water to the waist.

We spent our honeymoon at Magic Sands, Unit 303 last month. We were there for 8 days and wished we could have stayed longer!! Where to start? The view from the lanai was awesome, sitting out there for coffees in the morning and wine for sunsets and we were able to get some beautiful sunset shots. You can just sit outside and enjoy the sound of the ocean. Everything in the condo was like new, clean as a whistle and nicely done. It had all the kitchen supplies we needed, along with a few extras like a cooler, boogie board and chairs. We loved the location of the condo, right beside a really great beach and not too far from the main drag. Also, the owner was very accommodating to all of our questions before we arrived and sent detailed instructions on how to get there, places to go, etc. We'd definitely recommend to friends and will be back. Thank You!

You have to be very careful which unit you rent. These are individually owned and some of the units are less desireable than others. I reccomend 201 or 203. These two units are completely updated to the highest standards and are wonderful to stay in. Another member of our party rented 204 and it was a huge disappointment. 204 had the original kitchen cupboards and seemingly the same appliances from when the condo was originally built in the mid 1960's. Only one burner on the stove worked. The ocean view from Kona Magic Sands is priceless. Sitting on the lanai is like being on a cruise ship looking directly in to the ocean. Magic Sands beach could not be any closer; it is right next door. The exterior of the building and grounds are very well maintained. One huge downfall about staying here is the female owner of unit 207. Every year we visit, myself or someone in our group, has to endure one of her outbursts. During one visit , we were yelled at for using the BBQ (that is intended for use by guests) after being told by the location Manager where to correctly place the grill. On another occasion, falsely accused of littering on the beach (which is completely untrue). This year, it was a lecture about tracking sand in near the pool and not showering properly topped off by repeated walks by our front door to stare inside. She does not act in an official capacity, but goes above and beyond to make people who rent these units feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I have witnessed her exhibit this "self-appointed," sense of authority to others as well. People who are on vacation and paying good money to rent a place do not want to experience her. Hopefully, the other owners will realize that she is having a negative impact on their prospective renters and reign her in.

Unit 303 at KMS is exactly as shown in the photos, plus more when you factor in the amazing sound of the ocean right below you, and the sweet Hawaiian breeze gently blowing through the condo 24/7. The owners are hospitable in every way, answering questions and providing all the extras you could want, from high-end linens and appliances, to the full use of the in-suite washer/dryer. We explored many parts of this fascinating Island, and always returned to this condo feeling we had chosen the best place in all of Hawaii. The large lanai with its stunning views would be hard to beat, and the fun watching the beach action next door kept us entertained for hours. It was a bonus to pop downstairs to the beach for a swim at the beautiful beach, then be back on the lanai for happy hour and sunsets without having to get in a car! We have no hesitation in recommending this unit and location to our family, friends and TripAdvisor users - but we'll be mad if it's not available when we inevitably return to finish exploring the amazing Big Island.

Comments Re: Unit 303 Rental # 917292

We've also rented 303 at Kona Magic Sands on previous vacations. When we opened the door, what a surprise to find how beautifully the condo had been redone! Absolutely, everything was tip top! The bottle of wine was such a nice beginning.
We have visited the Hawaiian Islands many times and this was the cleanest and best supplied unit by far. The amenities and appointments have been well thought out.
Everything was so comfortable and of course the lanai view is breathtaking. Air conditioning is extremely important to us, so we appreciated the quiet, modern AC unit and the two ceiling fans.
The owners are very easy to contact and willing to assist with specific requests. (This is not always the way with vacation rentals.)
All the "positive" comments on previous reviews and pictures are very accurate and true.
We plan on returning soon.
