Atlantis Submarines, located at the Kona Pier on the Big Island is a different and fun adventure. After being transported out to the sub by boat, you climb down the ladder into the seating area of the submarine. You can watch the depth change on a digital readout as the sub slowly dives to the final depth of 110 feet which sets the sub on the bottom. On the way down, you can view various fish as each seat has a porthole for viewing. There are two shipwrecks that you can see...one of them clearly has a contrived addition to it! It is important to remember that the deeper the sub goes, the less visibility there is due to lack of sunlight, so all your pictures will not have that brilliant color you see on scuba diving tv shows. Nevertheless, it is definitely a departure from the ordinary boat ride.

Kona and the Kona coast has some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. That said, if you don't like to snorkel or people in your party are unable to do so, this is a great way to see the variety of marine corals, fishes, and other life on the reef in Kona. While some of the reef is man made, we saw all kinds of fish, coral, etc. We also got to see some ship wrecks and the sub got as deep as 100 feet under water. The view windows are large and easy to see through and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you have a Holo Holo discount card the prices are more reasonable.

This was awesome. We went down into the depts of the ocean and viewed the coral reef. The guided tour was very informational. It was amazing to see the fish that you see in Aquariams in their natural habitat. We saw two ship wrecks and the explanation of how they happened to be there.

See lots of fish without getting wet! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. We'd been snorkeling already, but saw even more fish and a free-swimming eel while we were on the sub. The shipwrecks were cool too as there were tons of fish swimming around them. Lots of fun for the whole family.

On a seven day cruise, this was about the coolest thing my family did. At last, I got to ride on a true bona-fide submarine. Complete with bells, whistles, hatches being shut, etc.
Worth the money without a doubt. Saw a white tip shark [I did not know they could lay still without swimming], an eel, fish, coral. Visibility was about 100 feet and it was just off the Kona dock and cruise ship. One of my daughters has problems with closed in spaces but, not with this ship. It was plenty spacious. We set on the bottom at 107 feet....what a thrill.
Do it, folks!
