You will bottom out multiple times on this road no matter how slow or carefully you drive. The pot holes are literally filled with wood chips. If you don't have a higher vehicle you can park and walk the road (2 miles), it is hot and there are other beaches. Sometimes you can get picked up for a bumpy pickup truck ride. The beach is sandy, long, shaded, great swimming. If you follow the beach up the coast, walk the lava field trail (very hot) you come to Makalawena. Uncrowded beautiful beach no shade.

This place is a diamond in the rough, literally! The road was awful, make sure to bring a vehicle with good clearance....not a compact car! Keep going past the first parking area and you'll see a second lot with bathrooms and some picnic benches. This is a great place to beach comb, possibly see sea turtles, watch planes come into the kona airport, or enjoy the beach! We walked quite a bit down the beach and some areas had very very soft sand, while other areas had rough sand. A super fun experience/adventure...also, its free!

The road into this beach is a beast-- many people give up and go back. Once you get there, it's an ok beach -- no shade, but a lot of nice sand and Big Island's beautiful water. There are many beaches that I find preferable.

You definately need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get down to the beach. We saw others in regular cars and it was very slow going for them. The beaches are beautiful and not crowded. Entry to the water is iffy due to the rocks, but each beach had sandy spots to enter at. The hike over the lava rock trail between the beaches is other-worldy, but make sure to bring tennis shoes. It takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. We saw a few people in their flip-flops and they were struggling. We wandered over the lava field a bit and saw some wild goats.
